Kogyaru is a Japanese fashion culture which involves schoolgirls wearing an outfit based on their uniform, but with very short skirts. The short skirts are worn without any leggings, irrespective of the season (summer, winter or rainy). The girls may also wear loose socks, scarves and have dyed hair and they are often tanned.
The word "kogal" is a contraction of kōkōsei gyaru 高校生ギャル which means "high school gal".
Kogals have been accused of conspicuous consumption, living off their parents and/or practicing
enjo-kosai/JK Business (amateur prostitution/dating service). Critics decry their materialism as reflecting a larger psychological or spiritual emptiness in modern Japanese life. Some kogals support their lifestyle with allowances from wealthy parents, living a "parasite single" existence that grates against traditional principles of duty and industry.
Kogyaru key points:
- High School students or former students
- Mini/Micro skirts, naked legs or loose/knee-high socks
- Mobile phones or expensive objects reflecting their materialism that sometime leads them to
JK Business- Often they have brown and blond hair, contact lenses and tanned skin
