Why this game sucks

Normally I wouldn't come back years later just to say this... but I recently tried to replay this, and the first thing I noticed (other than Kuon being an adorable ball of moe goodness) is that the protagonist is unbelievably annoying. Self-pity, misses the point, dense, has his priorities wrong from the beginning almost to the end, and he is just generally an idiot about the things that count. This is even aside from the self-hating vampire trope, which doesn't work here. The idiot should be grateful he's alive, but he starts obsessing over how he wants to be human again immediately, even before he encounters or knows the negatives of being one.

It doesn't help that Fran is a far weaker heroine than Krys from the first Konakana... and that the game as a whole feels like it was made in 2004 rather than 2012. The archaic BGM, the stereotypical 'I hate the world' antagonist, and a set of heroines that are so familiar as to feel stale.

This game's good moments (Kuon being cute, for one thing) are interspersed with so many facepalm moments that I had to drop this after Kuon's route the second time I played it... sad, just so sad.

This is a psp game, so it feeling "old" isn't exactly weird. Well, the technical side that is.

As for the rest... different writers. I've read another work by the guy who wrote this, and let's just say, it was not exactly good either. Sometimes makes me wonder, how they manage to still stay in the industry this long, after multiple very questionable stories.

In this case, they were banking on the original Konakana's reputation. Kuon, the imouto heroine, is essentially Konata with a different disease but the same attitude that he had in Krys's path on the first ending. If I had to guess, they probably didn't want to have to pay the fee to bring Takehaya back.

That's a shame. I wasn't especially interested in this VN in the first place since I didn't end up liking KonaKana that much (save for Sakura's route), but I suppose I definitely won't be reading it now.
