< report >Humor is subjective; but if a story wants to take itself seriously, rape isn't funny.
But Rance doesn't even try that; it has gameplay and some arty colors. Nothing else.
There, I said it.
Not even going to debate that with anyone here; that would mean I'd be talking to a brick wall and quite frankly, I got better things to do.
I never said that rape shouldn't be comedy, I said that it isn't for any given title that wants to be not a meme.

The rest, I don't care about.
Thought this thread was about english localizations, and not every eroge ever made.
That the west always gets the shortest stick is nothing new.

< report >Just stating facts.
Please learn to read, before you assume that I complain about the western VN scene being shit.
I already mentioned that it's my own fault for being too lazy to learn another language.
This applies to everyone else; everyone can start learning Japanese at this point.

No shit, Sherlock, the west censors stuff.

drawing the short stick due to bad luck and being dumb with censorshit are two different things. its not that the west has bad luck, they are deliberately causing their own downfall.

that said, rapelay incident version 2.0 is just around the corner. doubt it will take 5 years. I bet it'll take at most 2 years and that's being generous. here's hoping devs like MG or nekonyan to start thinking of no US and UK release.

< report >I expect more high resolution VN and something we haven't seen yet. Hope the next decade will be a blast. Also hope I find some thing similar to Kono Oozora ni, Tsubasa o Hirogete. I love this VN.Last modified on 2019-03-31 at 10:02

< report >What will come, will come. Que sera sera.

Though I do suggest if your interested in sticking with VN's long term, to learn Japanese and then you can avoid almost every negative aspect of localisated VN's. It just makes sense as a long term investment.

Also inb4 the inevitable Fate/Stay Night/Muv-Luv Alternative/Steins;Gate was never good comment.Last modified on 2019-03-31 at 11:54

< report >my incredibly pessimistic view:

the Japanese market grew beyond the bounds of sustainability, people expected too much, too big, too groundbreaking, pushing studios to gamble with huge budgets and collapse if they made any mistakes. so companies start collapsing.

in this desperate market they reach out for any possible way to scrape a little more money to survive, so they start dumping translations into the English market, not earning enough there to save them, just trying to keep afloat a little longer. The sales still aren't enough to sustain their costs, so they fall apart anyway.

however, the rush of quality titles at cheap prices into the English market may glut and destroy the western market, giving them exactly the same overblown expectations of quality that doomed the japanese market, and expecting it at an even lower cost than the cost which was already unsustainable. so people buy up the wave of awesome translations cheap, then refuse to buy anything else because the quality-to-cost ratio isn't as good, and then the western market completely implodes.

hopefully I will be wrong about all that.

< report >I think it's unreasonable to expect every developer to come up with something new. Maybe a few who are already known for it or some that can risk the potential loss in profits. I've seen
development teams in the gaming industry go down under because in the pursuit of innovation, they abandoned what made their games sell so well in the first place.

As much as people everywhere will try to deny it, unoriginality isn't harmful to companies in and of itself. Why bother fixing something if it works? I think it's better to improve on what
already exists. Innovation is only a temporary solution that is becoming less and less viable as more and more things have been done before. The pokemon anime realized this and has been surviving
by replacing their old fans with kids who aren't familiar with all the same old plot devices. All of this talk of needing something new is done under the assumption that we won't die and be replaced
by newbies.

I hope vn companies will find a way to survive but I'm part of the sell good but not well crowd. If vns become too mainstream, they'll be even more visible to the moral authoritarian busybodies
and come under more fire. Then they'll start to cave in to the political pressure. It happened to the video game industry. It's happening to the anime industry. It'll happen to vns too. By that point they'll be dead in spirit even if they're still kicking around.Last modified on 2019-04-06 at 12:26
