Okay, let me start this announcement with an apology for the lack of any major new feature, which you probably have not even been expecting to begin with. I got slightly sidetracked again to do something that really had to be done: improving and documenting the framework used to develop VNDB. But before we get into that, let's first do the usual thing. The noticable improvements to this website:

- Moderators can overrule tag votes
We've noticed that some tag votes on some VN entries really required moderation. This feature makes it possible for a moderator to overrule a tag score for a particular VN.

- New filter to the release browser: whether it's been released or not
This is mostly a convenience option, you could also select the correct "released before" or "released after" options, but this is easier and allows you to permanently filter out unreleased games without having to change the date in the filters each day.

- Added listing of all recently replied to threads
- Moved "Save as defaults" button a bit in the filter box
- Changed order of the "all notifications" listing
- Added error message when trying to select meta tags in the VN filters
- Added annoying warning message when uploading screenshots in a non-standard resolution

And now a message for everyone who codes websites and is sick of crappy frameworks, programming languages, template systems, and having loads of copy-pasted code all around: Use The Ultimate Website Framework to code your sites!
(And once you feel somewhat comfortable with TUWF, get yourself a copy of the VNDB code and help me out with my to-do list! :-P)

What about animated flash avatars, ubars and smilies, we absolutely need those instead of this geeky frum.. farm.. formwerk stuff. =>.<='''

Objection. We DO NOT need those, the discussion boards are fine the way they are.

Otherwise, thanks for the great work Yorhel. As always. :P

P.S.: Wait, was that sarcasm? SO confusing... X_XLast modified on 2011-02-04 at 11:15

Avatars is okay, but i don't think that we really need ubars and smileys....

That was sarcasm... avatars are probably the last thing this website needs. Minimalistic forums are way better than the ones packed with fucktons of unnecessary features. So... even though the above was sarcasm, may such things never get implemented.

And thanks for your good work.

when you add avatars on this site, you would also get the reqeusts of monthly/weekly/daily avatar of the month/week/day/hour/second. Also, mods would have to delete every pr0n, racist or facism avatar which would require lots of work.
If yorhel does want to implent avatars, but doesnt want his system messed up; I know lots of blog-sites which use www.gravatar.com to outsource the avatar thing. Don't know if this is technically possible with vndb.

^not that i promote this stuff or need avatars

Yup, that was a joke.

Still, I think small avatars (~90x90) would benefit the forums, since identifying the author of a comment with your "side vision" is faster and more intuitive than looking at nicknames, at least for myself.

Yeah I want cute avatars and huuuuuuuge signatures too then flashy .gif smileys. We also need reputation system with monthly gift awards and weekly IRL meetups.Last modified on 2011-02-05 at 11:57

The only change I would really want to the forums is an improved quote function.

Small avatars could help a bit, but it's not too necessary.

Hi, guys... I think we really, really don't need it...
After all, this is a "Database" Forum, not a "Chat" Forum...Last modified on 2011-02-07 at 03:48

After all, this is a "Database" Forum, not a "Chat" Forum...
And the actual difference is..?

You know, every forum out there has an option to turn off avatars, so its not like anybody would be forced to use them.

One of the sites I frequent has 16x16px "avatars", which is actually quite nice. Unfortunately it does require quite a bit of creativity of each user to create or steal something nice that fits in that size.

*IF* I implement avatars on VNDB, I don't think I'd make them larger than 60x60 or so, since that nicely fits to the left of each post without increasing the screen size by much. But I have no intention of adding avatars at this point, so whatever.

i think VNDB does fine without avatars, but that's just my opinion

I say: don't. (or with option to disable)

The main reason being that most posts don't exceed ±4 lines. And having avatars (and optionally more useless information) would only lead to longer pages, more scrolling and more distractions.
I really like the 'simplistic' design and no nonsense approach of this forum.
So no avatars, no v-penis.. I mean post counts, no signatures, no 'emoticons'...
The way I see it, a forum should be like IRC, but with options to edit previous messages, quote other users for quick reference and divide messages on a per topic basis.
Knowing who said what, when and about what is more than enough.
Seriously, what else do you need?

Now that's what pretty much sum up every important things

Some addition: The speed of VNDB is ***rival to none***. Spamming avatars or whatever apart of some basic features is, unwise,

Just keep it the way it is now. What's important is the text in the box, not who wrote it (unless it's a notorious troll of course). We're not here for chatting either, we're here for information.
