Surprise! I bet you weren't expecting an update so soon after the upload of 2.17, but here it is anyway. Not so surprisingly, a smallish update:

- Added category field to tags (content/ero/technical)
- Added tag visibility options by category on VN pages
- Group tags on the VN tag voting page by categories
This feature is a bit useless at this point since the tags have not been categorized yet, but as soon as that's done you'll like this feature. Also, sexual content related tags are invisible by default on VN pages, which makes VNDB slightly more work-safe.

- Added filter selector to tag pages
- Added new VN filters: wish/blacklist, voted, on VN list

The update indeed came as a surprise and seeing you being busy with the site convinced me to recheck the translation :P (+I coincidently just noticed an error yesterday)

what about ability to enable them by default in profile settings (similar to NSFW images)?

If you enable them once, your preferences will be stored in a cookie and they'll stay enabled. I am planning to convert all preference-related data currently stored in cookies so that they will be stored in the database for every user. But this requires some tinkering with the UI since I'm not fond of dumping all preference options in the profile settings.

On a somewhat related note, I've always wondered why spoiler preference carries over between games. It seems natural that people would want to see spoilers for some games (ones they've played) but not others (ones they haven't played). I once spoiled a game by forgetting to switch back to "hide spoilers" before visiting a different game's page.

Maybe it would be a huge pain to keep track of spoiler preferences for every game in the database. I don't know much about these kinds of things.

You've got a point there. Keeping track of spoiler preferences for every game may not be a very good idea as there are also quite a few people who dislike the entire spoiler system on VNDB and want it disabled completely. My idea with the improved preferences system is that you can explicitely indicate when a change in spoiler setting is permanent (i.e. should be saved) or when you just want to have a glance at the spoilers once. That would also take care of the issue.

i have to agree with the spoiler thing, iv gotten close to spoiling many VN's before because i forgot to switch back after looking at the tags of a recently read one...im all for a perma way to hide spoiler tags.

Nice job, as usual. Thanks for your hardwork! Kiseki say the same too.
Btw, just curious.... Why you use "Calm Before the Storm" for the title?Last modified on 2011-02-11 at 09:21

Because there is very likely a storm upcoming with the next update. Though it'll be a while before that's finished. :-(

Character database next update? I'm stunned! Even if it takes until Christmas, it's sooner than I'd dared hope. yorhel, you're too kind to us.

I've checked the character db draft, and i'd like to say that I believe the age of a character is completely useless.

Its just useless information that would only generate conflicts, as a character could appear in two different games, with different ages.
Ex.: Shikanosuke (KiraKira & KK CC)

That would require more info in the relations between game/character. Any other way around would be ugly i believe.Last modified on 2011-02-16 at 05:02

donno if this has been brought up before, but i noticed it's not possible to search using meta-tags? (eg gameplay)

is it possible for this to be implemented? or is just one of those things which don't work out well?

I've checked the character db draft, and i'd like to say that I believe the age of a character is completely useless.
That is addressed later in the draft:
  - "Age" field? Bad idea?
- May differ per release even when nothing else changed (hello JAST USA).
Can be handled by adding a new character and linking and stuff, but isn't
worth the trouble)
- Conflicting information. For example: When heroines are 1st grade high
school but it is stated in the beginning that "all characters are at
least 18 years old"
- Just a bad idea in general, since there are quite a few fuckable
10-years-olds, and explicitely stating that is not a very nice thing.

donno if this has been brought up before, but i noticed it's not possible to search using meta-tags? (eg gameplay)
It's possible, but have not implemented this because 1. it's heavy on the server, 2. it's useless in most cases. In the case of the gameplay tag it should really be a regular tag instead of a meta one...

Well, i think implementing the characters db would be great : i've been waiting for such an update : My suggestion would be that you do not implement the age of the character but the apparent age of the character like in link

Yeah~ that would be very very good.

A trait for characters apparent ages has already been designed, and looking at that link you provided it looks quite similar.

Though I don't understand what they meant by "Apparent Age: Ageless"... I mean even if you are immortal, like a vampire, you would still appear to be at the age that you turned into a vampire, right?

Well actually i think it's more likely designed for ' undefined apperant age ' : for example some characters are just talking objects or animals that you couldn't affect a proper apparent age : You should consider this case : However most likely in their case it's just a mistake!

It's not a required field anyway, can be left empty if it does not apply. (In fact it isn't even a field, just a trait :P)Last modified on 2011-02-20 at 11:53

Not a required field is all about vndb : i never came across a required one anyway : And creating a characters db is all about traits isn't it ?! My point is that you take your time creating a simple and rich characters db that you could forget about instead of making a basic one and trying to update and enhance it every time : i'm sure you guys have lots of work and small tasks that keep on growing!! i'm worrying about your health :p
