Steam Release

Note: these questions are merely curiosity-motivated and not related to editing or proving a point.

1. How heavily censored is the Steam edition? Does it remove anything particularly major or is it merely the typical removal of H Scenes and minor alterations to CG and script?

2. When does the bus crash happen in the story? Is it in the common route or one of the character routes?

3. Is it worth picking up the sequels as well? Are they mostly linear or do they have character routes too?

I'm going to consider picking up this game soon, now that I've finished Koi ga Saku Koro Sakura Doki. But I was curious about these things.

1) Apart from H scenes, I recall references to cannibalism being cut, to which degree I dunno. I still have yet to unpack my kickstarter stuff even.

2) It happens during a character route, specifically Amane's

3) Labyrinth contains after stories, short stories as well as the "grand route", no choices, linear or rather kinetic. Eden to is linear and is only one story (though short stories there are also), although there is one choices, never picked the wrong one though~

Also, be wary, Fruit is very focused on Slice of Life Comedy for a long long time, only late the drama happens. Additionally, prepare to turn your brain off for the route mentioned above, which is more or less the most importante, sadly so. The sequels may still have comedy but are serious throughout, for the most part.

Might as well also call Grisaia a Hollywood VN, you get expected Hollywood quality although the writing may be better than others, the drama Fujisaki Ryuuta writes is still dung and he is the main writer.

Oh right, I see. I plan on playing Amane's route first, actually. The sequels are more like Sorcery Jokers, in the sense that they're linear plot but have different epilogues?
The other thing is, what happened to Imouto Works? I tried to get the restoration patch but things didn't go so smoothly.Last modified on 2019-03-29 at 23:20

#3 Imouto Works closed their site. You should buy the Denpasoft version instead of the Steam if you want H.

I wonder why they closed the site? Is it still possible to access the patch somehow? Or I suppose we're out of luck now. How come Denpasoft never released a patch for it, like they did with Hoshimemo, and various other titles?

No luck involved. It's not like we don't have the official 18+ version.
Afaik technical limitations. This was more or less before steam were okay-ish with 18+ patches, so it wasn't developed with that in mind I'd presume. It most likely would've been too expensive and time-consuming to make an official patch. (Other 18+ patches by SP/Denpasoft started releasing in 2015, but of those Grisaia was most likely the trickiest to get to work, and they prob couldn't negotiate with FW for it at the time.)

It probably won't be easy for me to get the Denpasoft release, since I don't normally do transactions on American sites. I've also not used a credit card for any site that doesn't allow PayPal, so Steam is easier.
In addition, how does the Ladder Structure actually work? It's not like you have to do the routes in a certain order or you end up with a normal ending if you don't get to a character route or something, is it?Last modified on 2019-04-08 at 14:56

I was thinking of link when I read ladder structure... lol.
It's not, don't worry. More like you're climbing the ladder on the side of a building, and can get off on whichever floor you want. Well there you can enjoy that particular floor that usually looks different from the others. (Yep, serious explanation lol.)

You can get it through as well. Should be possible to work out a PayPal transfer with them.

#7, I've had luck getting a prepaid voucher from the Sekai Project store using PayPal and using on Denpasoft if you want to try that.

Thanks for the advice.
It turns out the ladder structure was just a choice in the last few scenes that take you to the character routes. More like a bus structure, but then the bus crashed when we got to Amane's route, so we took the ladder instead, huh.

Speaking of choices, how come I'm almost halfway through the common route and still not had a choice yet? Even so, I've really enjoyed what I've seen so far. Damn, that alleyway fight was intense!

Then the censorship. It turns out some CGs and sprites depiciting nudity were altered, such as Amane getting a bra to cover her breasts. And the rewritten script was just a case of minor alterations, such as Makina's dirty outburst during the baseball game scene, where two words were replaced with symbols. Not bad censorship, the extreme overcensorship in Princess Evangile really annoyed the hell out of me after I compared them. I do hope the censorship in the rest of the game isn't too strong, I do know the references to cannibalism are altered as well, hopefully no whole scenes are removed apart from H Scenes.

I have to say, this game was a good choice.

Ah, bummer! If only I'd thought of that before I got the game on Steam! Well whatever. I suppose it is in... I think that's euros, and I'm not sure exactly how many of those I have and it's probably too late now anyway.

I'll be honest, I don't mind so much removal of H Scenes and CG alterations, but it's when the script gets rewritten and starts toning things down that I can't stand it. It's precisely because of that that I wanted to get the 18+ version. And I was able to get the 18+ content for Saku Saku because of the free patch. If only Imouto Works hadn't closed down their site...

For the record is IYLMTSS on that JAST USA site?Last modified on 2019-04-15 at 11:15

It's what usually happens haha. Several of my friends prefer to not buy on steam, then I tell them it's available elsewhere after they've reluctantly bought it on steam.
I don't really remember much of the Grisaia censorship, but koestl is good.

Nope, it's a MG exclusive. Right now at least, probably forever.Last modified on 2019-04-15 at 12:27

It doesn't seem that bad as far as I've seen so far. As long as whole scenes apart from H Scenes aren't taken out it's not so bad, really. Incidentally the script has been given a few minor changes but from what I've seen so far, there seems to be a massive difference from what Front Wing did to this game's PSV edition which the Steam release is based on, and complete butchering. It's almost completely overlookable until you compare it to the adult version, actually. Besides, a few minor changes to dialogue, for instance changing naked to half naked and replacing dirty words with symbols or just removing them is nothing to hit the roof over, especially not after what MoeNovel did to IMHHW.

I am a bit concerned though about Amane's route. Apparantly there might be more censorship there as people seem to play the Unrated version for that one. Don't really know what to do there. There isn't massive censorship in Amane's route, is there? Apart from the references to cannibalism?
The steam version is the vita version which contains a rewritten script to fit an all-ages platform. New CGs serve as replacements for the H-scenes and other adult scenes, and adds in dialogue that salvages what it can of said removed/ altered 18+ scenes. (Not just H-scenes, but any scene with 18+ content. I bring this up because in this game, important dialogue occurs during 18+ scenes at several occasions.)
It also includes CGs in certain palces where the Denpasoft version has none. (Though these particular additions are extremely minor, and don't add any new dialogue as far as I am aware; only CGs to fill in places that had none.)
...if this is true, then does that mean the more substantial censorship was done in a way that didn't leave gaping holes in the plot?Last modified on 2019-04-15 at 13:26

I've reached Amane's route now, and I'm considering playing it again with the unrated version if the censorship of caniballism is too bad. But as long as the majority of the route is still here and the caniballism part is just a small one it should be fine.
