#124 Just because the VN is all about comedy doesn't mean it's okay to translate it liberally. Just look at Lamunation, It's also a fucking memege and the TL is fine.

Context: they're paying to stay at a Japanese inn in Japanese setting. Why use US Dollar instead of Yen?

What next?

Translate Geisha as slut or Shinto to Catholic just because your target demographic is the west?

Now you're reverse trolling hard. It's clearly an emphasised pronoun, not "United States". I agree that it is incredibly stupid to use capitals instead of bold text when the engine is capable of it, but that still doesn't mean you need to pretend like this.Last modified on 2020-01-30 at 18:27

At this point I just wonder if we actually need this discussion. The people in favour will always be in favour and the people against will always be against. We basically traded the same arguments back and forth for now going on 5 pages and nothing really changed as far as I can see. Would some mod like to close this thread (and all similar threads)?

Why should this and all "similar" threads be closed again? If you don't want to be a part of the discussion any further, just don't revisit the thread and be done with it instead of making a petition to shut all similar threads. People have every right to express their opinions on the quality (or lack thereof) of translations. Those opinions are not necessarily expressed to change your view. They might be expressed to warn like-minded people. They might be expressed to make your preferences known and so on.

Way to go, blindly rant at a note that I put in brackets, lol. I mean, most of them boil down to the basic stuff we already have in this thread, needing no further discussion. Calm your tits.

If you don't want to be a part of the discussion any further, just don't revisit the thread and be done with it
Not possible unless I let uBlock block the whole Post + Discussion board parts of the homepage because I don't want to see the thread pop up anymore - since it's unnecessary to discuss the quality any further at this point.Last modified on 2020-01-31 at 15:01

You are free to not participate in any of them. Just don't beg for them to be closed. Also just because you put something (stupid) in brackets doesn't make it immune to criticism.

If you haven't noticed already, the case where a game written by a GTA 5-loving Western pop culture enthusiast faring better with American English isn't necessarily comparable to this case. Too bad the text was not so well received by the Japanese audience back in 2016. That said, there was an interesting argument made on the post #59 noting the difficulty in keeping 'the original' between Western and Japanese cultural references.

Except this has never been about the "untranslatable" memes, jokes, (cultural) references etc. The criticism here is -in case it's still not crystal clear enough- the translator inserted jokes that did not exist just because they felt like it. They over-translated things, just because they felt like it. They under-translate things just because they felt like it. Talking about how hard it might be to translate some jokes, cultural references etc. is just digressing. They've butchered the text even when it was perfectly easy to translate it normally and that is what's being criticized.

To wa, Shiina wa hinin shimasen, hinin dakeni, hehe!
Don't take me seriously--take Jesus seriously! My pastor taught me that faith in Jesus is the best contraceptive!
Can you seriously call this thing a translation in good faith? I cannot.

#133 I'm refering to #126, not you. Here's a remind that you once noted:
"I hoped people would have at least enough dignity to accept a rewrite when they see one (seriously, if after seeing things like "最低だ->You're an actual scam artist, dude..." you are not even willing to concede it is a rewrite, then you are an intellectually dishonest person, to say the least) but apparently not."

So I came up with the actual context behind that line and demonstrated the Japanese line conveys all the same. Have you ever thought to revise your statement since then. I think not, and now you're just doubling down your effort to frame up.

Too bad I'm no longer bothered enough to go through the actual game just to provide the actual contexts of the referred dialogues instead of some sliced out of context lines, and prove they are not the case of rewriting, let alone discussing the merits of sense-for-sense translation. Doing that once was enough for me, spare me from your torture.Last modified on 2020-01-31 at 21:15

I didn't know we were only allowed to respond to those who refer to us on a public forum.

For 最低だ, a simple "You are the worst." would do. All that "You're an actual scam artist, dude..." thing is a rewrite for the sake of a rewrite. Making someone install a game to gain some additional points yourself is not a scam and it certainly does not make one an "actual scam artist". Just because you find it close enough and you are fine with rewriting stuff doesn't mean I have to revise my opinion on the subject.

By all means, please continue to pretend that line could be a proper translation, it's actually pretty hilarious you can do that. Shiina can be a Christian for all you know, right? And if you try hard enough to tear the fabric of space and time, maybe it would have a pass as a translation, fingers crossed.

#135 As I have noted several times before, I'm saying that these short lines brought upon this thread are not rewritten from the original context in the original game, I have never denied they could have done better with those lines. It is a chore to say this again but I do not own the translated copy of this game.

I'm a professional translator from Japanese to my native language (not English). If some examples from the last page are correct, then translator and editor were waaaaay too liberal, and it's a strictly bad way of handling original work. It's not the worst translation, since they conveyed meaning decently enough, but, with all my respect to localizing team, it's also far from being the best or even very good one.

I kinda like games by ASa Project. These guys are doing very decent moege with pretty nice characters and comedy, so I hope English-speaking community will keep an eye on them.Last modified on 2020-05-22 at 02:03

@137
Have you read the game or are you basing your opinion on the ""worst"" examples?

Of course, Steam casuals have standard to the point where they even eat up a heap of trash by sakuragame. Normies will eat anything thrown at 'em, especially memege with equally meme-level TL quality such as this.

I've had my 'shitty opinion of translators/their work' phase a year ago. Please close this thread, it achieves nothing.

There is nothing more pointless than posting in a thread you want to see closed. I'd much rather get rid of people who do that than reward such behavior by closing the thread... psychology is a bitch.

lol, I didn't realize that I wrote the same thing a couple of months ago, sorry :D
