< report >Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but all the English translations made by this one dude on Patreon are bad. You can see it being discussed on /vr/.
For example his Makyouden translation. Three random scenes taken, all three have serious rewrites and omissions.
A random scene from Dead of the Brain, completely rewritten.
Another scene where half of the line got ignored completely.
I dunno what to say other than that it seems he's taking advantage of people being interested in PC98 games.Last modified on 2019-07-07 at 09:25

< report >Shame. I was actually half interested in playing this title if only cause of the box art. Horror isn't usually my thing but I want to know the reason why there's a Terminator like robot/cyborg in a zombie game (I'm gonna assume its a brain transplanted into a full body cyborg due to the brain stem imagery)Last modified on 2019-07-07 at 11:58

< report >Heh, interesting. Someone created a thread on a forum I frequent and linked to the Patreon and such. I asked whether it was machine-translated(-supported) but was told it was an actual translation. Well...

< report >From my experience with it, i was perfectly able to understand the plot, but the dialogue felt quite generic. From the pointed out rewrites, it seems to be a original problem rather than a bad translation problem (hell, the "eletric chamber" part made that line funnier and added to the ridiculous situation in the prologue).
Rather than a line here or there, i would really like a comparison for the part where one of the bad guys is beaten at the hospital and gives a few plot twists. That would probably be the part impacted the most by a bad translation.

< report >His rewrites are based on machine translations. This example clearly shows it.
Edit: And also note that the middle example in the first post, the one about the party shows the guy doesn't even know basic Japanese grammar. A part of Cole's line goes パーティをやろうと思いまして (I was thinking about having a party), in other words Cole is thinking about organizing a party. The grammar used is explained here for example https://japanesetest4you.com/flashcard/learn-japanese-grammar-44/. The given level is N4, it's something you'll find towards the beginning of any Japanese textbook. Yet the guy translated it completely wrong, as Cole going to some different party currently being held elsewhere.Last modified on 2019-07-10 at 13:00

< report >And thanks to you whiny f*ggots, we're fucked out of a English version. Was it REALLY that important to bum rush a dude because he made a decent translation based on a machine translation? imagine giving a fuck, lol.

< report >an inaccurate translation can sometimes still be fun for people who have no language skills and want to play, though it's more honest if the translator gives the translation a wacky name so people know it's not meant to be a serious translation.

< report >This was clearly meant as a "serious translation". And he was gladly taking money for it on Patreon, while presenting himself as someone who finally makes old games available to masses. All while not knowing a lick of Japanese, just editing terrible machine translations.
In other words, he was a disgusting scammer and its disgusting to support and venerate him.

< report >I think we still need add this translation on vndb page. I finished game in english today and this not so bad. It fully readable and enjoying, if I not check treads about translation before reading I cant tell it based on machine. Ok, if you check every stroke original text and say like "cmon, there was "thinking about having a party", not a "on my way to a party" when it really have no difference in context - okay, but if you have so much japanese knowledge, why you playing this in english?
I just missed this game 2 years because not knowing about translation. Even if it have much rewrites, it still give some good, not ruined experience. So, I think for sake of not knowing japanese language players we should add this translation, maybe write some note above it saying it based on machine, but we should admit that existence. Moreover, we have translations like Eve: Burst Error, where we have million of jokes about Beatles and something, and we do not delete translation because of that. It is bad quality translation, maybe even based on machine (who know - if Dead of the Brain based on machine, and I`m not noticed that when playing the game, it may be many translations like that), but it still give good expression, because VN is good. Same thing here.
Sorry if I have some mistakes in writing - english is not my native language.Last modified on 2021-05-04 at 00:30

< report >I actually agree with this. I suppose there is some reason for translation removal, but I was kinda surprised that there was a transation in a first place. I think it's good to have this release on vndb, or at least have a reason for not having it, so that people don't ask this question anymore.
The best part about this translation is that there are translation tools on the internet, and any person can use them to make the translation as good as needed. But to find those tools you need to know that you can search for them.Last modified on 2021-05-04 at 03:51
