Visual Novel video playback issue

|I am having trouble with video playback on a whole bunch of visual novels. Many visual novels just show a black screen or skip the video, and some even crash. I don't have this problem with any other video games or software.|

This one is only playable if I rename the folder the videos are in.
A quick Google search said to install CCCP or K-Lite, but neither made any difference.

|Having your OS (which most likely has to be Windows Vista or later, would not bet on XP) updated until there are no updates (that can take a few many restarts and re-searches) should suffice. Of course, deleting standard software is never recommended, even if you never use Windows Media Player (I simply use mpc-hc).|
If the problem may be solved by renaming the folder, either the folder has problematic character (and so can a file) or the path is too long. My humble guess is that anything but Latin script and slashes can cause problems.
As always, even if one has the non-Japanese version, setting locale (display of non-unicode characters) to Japanese is better done than not.
