VNDB 2.20: DATABASE $ELLOUT!

Greetings, my dear visitors!

Today I will tell you the tale of this shiny new update that I have just uploaded a few seconds ago.

The character database was filled with bugs, annoying little bugs. That is not what the database was supposed to be used for, because bugs are usually not very major characters in visual novels. I have already exterminated quite a few bugs before uploading this shiny new update, but most of the remaining bugs should now have left the building (err, database) as well!

More character-related changes:
- Database edit/delete notifications are also generated for chardb edits
- Added spoiler warning to character revision pages
- [spoiler] tag visibility is set with the global setting rather than mouse-over
- The characters listing on trait pages is now cached (same as VN listing on tag pages)
- Added "Add character" link to VN pages
- Added "All except characters" filter to history browser

Besides the minor changes to the character database, let me also introduce a new feature: "buy now!" affiliate links to VN pages! Yes, you read that right, VNDB is doing "bad things" involving "money". But not to worry! VNDB wouldn't be VNDB if there was no method to get rid of that. If you are sure you're not going to ever buy a VN anyway (bad boy!) just add the following to your "Custom CSS" on your profile:
#buynow { display: none }
On the other hand, if you do wish to buy VNs, please use VNDB as your search engine! :P
Currently, we only have links to Play-Asia and J-List. Publishers and shops wishing to advertise in the form of "buy now!" links can contact me at contact@vndb.org.

EDIT: The affiliate links are a lot less annoying now, you probably won't need the above CSS trick.

And some more improvements:
- Removed the user rank system.
We now don't have moderators and admins anymore, I can just grant and remove access rights to individual parts of the site.

- Hide links in [spoiler] tags
- Added char/tag/trait stats to database statistics box
- Added "Image ID" field to VN cover image uploader

Oh come on, still no love for Android? It even got a Japanese-VN release a few months ago (what, does it have to be a major release or something?)

Clearly yorhel is actually Steve Jobs.

EDIT: Even Kira☆Kira has an Android version now - link
Steve Jobs indeed.Last modified on 2011-06-28 at 00:55

Okay, just one question: how does this "no moderators, only access to different parts of the site" work? Because... Well, I've seen no change at all except that the cute [mod] extension disappeared from my profile... :P

From a practical point of view, that's pretty much the only change. :-P The change simply allows for some more flexibility on my part.

Sex, Drugs and Alcohol
Last time I checked Alcohol was pretty much a drug too. Your quote should be "Sex, Drugs and Rock'n'Roll".

I like the "Buy now" feature... even when I buy visual novels somewhere else :P

- Added "Add character" link to VN pages

Hmm, I can't find it. Do I need access rights you were talking about?

Yeah, I buy my VNs elsewhere too. The place is called Piratebay. They have the lowest prices possible. :D
...
Yo-ho-ho, I be a scurvy pirate, bite me backside! :P

P.S.: Oh, I almost forgot it again: Great job as always! =DLast modified on 2011-05-01 at 13:27

Except I didn't like KiraKira. >_>

Do I need access rights you were talking about?
Yup, you'll only see that link if you can actually add characters.

Also, I changed the way the affiliate links were displayed. They should be a lot less annoying now.

I see, keep me in mind... I would be glad :]

Damn you almost gave me an heart attack with that title of yours.

I never expected an sankaku-esque title on a VNDB announcement.

Anyway, i might have gone blind but i searched the site all over to see that "buy nao" link and i have yet to find it.
I believe its a great addition having VNDB linking to the sites selling the original stuff.
Dunno if that really will generate any income to either parts (VNDB, Publishers) but still, it is a nice move.

That aside, i found quite interesting your moderation approach Yorhel. Having cleared up user classes really does seem like a good move.
Correct me if i'm wrong but i belive it doesn't change much code-wise... More like it saves you the trouble of having to create new useless user-classes (Trusted user, Limited User and so forth) each time you add something to the site. Is that correct?

tl;dr Nice update

Even if the user levels are no longer coded, they're still there.

It's not very noticable now that I made it less annoying. :( Anyway, most popular games have a link, like v5 for example.

Exactly. And the full change can be described on a single page: link :-) (and didn't take me very long, either).Last modified on 2011-05-01 at 17:44

Lovely. Its quite well placed.
People who don't care won't notice, and people looking for it will find it. Good job.

And thanks for saving the the trouble of actually looking for the commit with the changes.
I really appreciate it.

We could do without character sections, honestly. This isn't a social networking slum like MAL, it's a resource and a reference tool. Duplicating Wikipedia and MAL just adds annoying clutter and makes the site more tedious to navigate.

Yeah, how dare we add a character database that was heavily requested and is currently used as a comprehensive resource and reference tool!!! Blasphemy! What have become of this site?! I long for the days when it's purpose was... ummm... what was it again?
a resource and a reference tool.
Oh yeah... that...
You, my friend, is the master of dumb complains. -.-'

How about excluding any non-letter/non-number symbols from search? Would be useful, I think.

@gabe: now now, don't be so harsh. Not seeing the point of the character database is understandable. I consider that a compliment to VNDB for being an otherwise totally no-nonsense reference tool. :-D

@irx: I believe that is already the case for most symbols. The search is not an easy topic, though, since in many cases symbols do actually have significance. :-(

I'm mostly talking about duplicate symbols like "!" and "!" (also tildas, dots etc.), I usually have to strip them from the search string manually anyway, so why not do it automatically?

Btw, any chance for a preview function, or an undo? =) Sometimes upload a cover which doesn't look that good after scaling...

A preview option has been on the to-do list for a looong time, and will unfortunately stay there for a while as well - it requires a good revamp of the code. :-(

Not the best solution, but there is a sandbox VNDB available for testing.

@gabezhul, people are tagging characters by their generic FOOTWEAR, your "requesters" are only looking for a vehicle to vent their OCD.

@yorhel, would you consider adding a section for credits/staff on VNs? Aside from the mostly incomplete Uchuu Saikyou no Seiyuu website, there isn't really a place to look up the dev or CV staff for VNs, or who are the regular employees and freelancers for certain projects.

link for seiyuu

EGS has staff listed by game but not by company, I think company info might be a little vague most of the time

I believe that's the most requested feature at the moment. And yes, it will be added, just don't ask when. >_>

(Reads that yorhel didn't like KiraKira)

Oh, so THAT'S why we get no love for Android, KiraKira apparently doesn't count: linkLast modified on 2011-06-28 at 00:56
