Why animated visual novels are so rare

< report >Just some musings. The technology to make animated VNs has been around for decades. Fushidara and Tane o Tsukeru Otoko ~Mezase Zen'in Jutai~ have great animation. Hara Min!! ~Saimin Nakadashi Kozukuri Sengen~ the sprites themselves breath and move. I can understand that fully animated 3d games are expensive and have issues with clipping and frame rates and whatnot but even just animated sex scenes are good enough and even that's rare. I certainly will purchase an animated version of any visual novel when one is available over a non animated one.

For example: Toriko no Shirabe ~Midara ni Aegu Otome Sextet~ and other Guilty games has an animated and non animated versions with the animation added long after the original release. Same with Reika no Yakata ~Saimin Yuugi e no Shoutaijou~ and well too many others to count. I would assume the animated versions outsell the normal ones but I don't know. If animated versions outsold non animated versions I'm sure it would compel companies to only make animated games but animation is not the norm. Some companies like SQUEEZ and Swan and Softhouse-Seal exclusively make games with animation but they're in the minority.

So why? I understand saving on cost but it's not that expensive and technology to animate scenes have improved greatly over the years. Hell Miku Miku Dance has gotten so good it's better than professional Vocaloid and even that amateur technology is light years ahead of the VN market. So why are fans not pushing the market toward exclusive animated titles? Cost be damned, if fans had demanded animation from every title they bought the market would have supported it. Instead fans didn't seem to care and companies followed the money. If fans aren't picky whether a title has animation or not then there's no reason to incur the extra cost.

I simply don't understand why fans didn't push harder for animation in visual novels. What a world we could have had.

< report >They are not worth it.
VNs already have issues selling as it is and you want them to churn out more cash, which would inflate the sales, which would in return mean your user base is severed.
I do like animated scenes but it's a luxury not many companies have.
I guess the userbase wouldn't be willing to set animation as the standard if it hurts their pocket.
Maybe the problem it's you, learn to fap to stills.

< report >Besides the obvious budget concerns, I also have been under the impression lots of VN readers in Japan don't have great hardware. I know that several VNs are still being made in 4:3
Ask for more expensive hardware and you may lose costumers

< report >#3 And they usually play dlsite stuff which doesnt even has voices.
Honestly before making animations an standard we need sex noises and girls moans an standard first.

< report >I know they're not worth it. I know there's budget concerns. My question is WHY are they not worth it? Why is it fans didn't demand animation and not give their money to games only with animation? Why did buyers say to themselves 'no animation? meh'

< report >I think maybe it it more expensive to make VNs with animation and so it it wiil cost more money to buyers, I suppose, that's why people don't demand VNs with animations.

< report >most people into VNs are in it to read some story with some visuals at their own pace. if people just want some animated H-scenes then they'd go watch some hentai instead.

< report >#6 For me it's because there are other things that are much more important besides animation, such as whether or not the story is interesting to read or how often the game explores the kinks I have. Brand loyalty might also play a role, because even yourself I've noticed you played many lolicon games but I rarely see you touch anything from Tanuki Soft or Kaeru Soft even after they started using e-mote. Or how you dropped Musumaker which has some animation in it as well. We both read in Japanese but let's face it we stick to the companies or franchises we know and love, animation is just not enough.

I already said what I think why.
Users don't care or they wouldn't want to pay for the extra costs of adding something so superfluous.
Animations don't really make much difference to them.
This reads like an f95 thread...

< report >Tbh I wouldn't want to pay more to have animations. Heck, I don't really care about voice acting even. I've read FataMoru which doesn't have voice acting and it was perfect as it is. I buy and read VNs for the story, not for fancy animations and voices. Sound effects and overall visuals are a different case.Last modified on 2020-08-15 at 15:53

yeah basically if i want to get the animated porn i'll watch hentai instead, in a video player that's properly designed for that so i can skip around to what i want.

of course there are animated porn games that largely dispense with plot entirely and go straight to animated sex scenes, often just letting you choose from a scene viewer.

it would feel a little disjointed to have a full 40 hours of normal vn style gameplay with static sprites and then suddenly an animated loop sex scene, wouldn't it?

That's exactly what SukiSuki did, and those scenes looked extremely awkward for me - like those cheap flash hentai games.

OTOH Sisters ~Natsu no Saigo no Hi~ looked pretty good, but that was almost fully animated - more an "interactive movie" or, as they were called, FMV adventure game, than VN. But still looping in H-scenes gave it a bit awkward vibe.Last modified on 2020-08-15 at 16:42

< report >Animation probably adds significantly to the cost (or at least, it used to). One of the appeals of VNs is that even if one fails, you're not financially ruined. As you increase production values, failure isn't an option anymore. It's not that animation isn't appealing to users, but that other factors take priority: character designs, concept, etc. In a saturated market, it could be that sales are fairly stable regardless of bells and whistles.

It might also be that animation is surprisingly difficult to market: you can't animate a box cover, and even animations on shop pages are uncommon. Take this Getchu shop page for School Days. In one corner there's an Adobe Flash player video that fails to display by default in my browser, surrounded by a bunch of still CG. This is for an interactive movie where the animation is the selling point! It's not clear why this is so, but maybe Japanese DL shops are set in their ways and don't want to accommodate deviations from the standard page template.Last modified on 2020-08-15 at 16:48

< report >It probably isn't even about the cost as it is about the work - Even if you're using something extremely barebone like Koikatsu it would still take ages to 'animate' a single route. And I doubt the average VN consumer would like too much (if any) animation anyway.

< report >@2 Lol, when I just started I could only fap on animated scenes, but it was "cured" in a month or so. But I doubt that the problem is the price, though. I doubt that this guy did have more funds than an average Japanese VN developer. link
The animation looks very nice and I don't think it costed him too much.
He got his patreons already AFTER releasing the first game. I even started to consider if I should make one as well and earn from Patreon, but it is a rather risky thing to do in my country (though I know that there a lot of porn-creators here in Russia and I've never heard about any one of them getting caught by the government, but I'd rather avoid the risk).
There are rather cheap ways to make very nice animations, I guess Japanese just don't know them.Last modified on 2020-08-22 at 03:16

< report >#16 The example is a <2 hours VN, since its uncensored version could be enjoyed for as little as $1, it's safe to say that the author is not stressed on making money. For bigger producers who make longer VNs, there will be much more work to do I would say, and it will cost them more as a result. Not to mention that it really seems unnecessary for us readers after all.

< report >tomtheerogeman, i don't think that's it. I just never got into Nonohara Miki's works after Mei Shoujo because of the lack of incest. Didn't even know they moved to animation, will give it another chance thanks for the information.

I couldn't get into Musumaker after the girl begs the protagonist not to throw her away because she's been abused. I just ... I just can't. lolis should be protected, seeing one abused and disabled just made me too upset to continue. I don't want to see scared lolis being abused.Last modified on 2020-08-29 at 18:13

So it wasn't the premise of running a child prostitution ring that turned you off the game then.Last modified on 2020-08-29 at 18:58

< report >No. loli prostitutes are sexy
Koboreochiru Shoujo-tachi ~Papakatsu JC Kairaku Ochi no Kiroku~
Dosukebe Bitch na Enkou ***gakusei no Sex Zanmai Natsuyasumi ~Akari & Yukino~
Girl wants to engage in enjou kosei? Nice, knock yourself out. Girl abused to force her compliance to be a prostitute? NOPE. I'm out.
