< report >I haven't played through much of this game yet but from what I could gather, the original graphics are often considered to be amateur-ish and to have aged poorly, while the PS2 graphics are often considered to lose some of the charm the original graphics have. PS3 graphics seem to be mostly the same as the PS2 graphics but with a bunch of tweaks to make them look better (though that's up for debate, I guess) and Steam graphics seem to be entirely different from all three of them.
So the question is, which do you guys prefer? Personally I haven't played nearly enough to form an opinion on the matter yet, but I would like to know which ones people generally prefer more or generally dislike more.

< report >Steam graphics are actually MG ones, they just sell it on Steam.
It's honestly a toss-up between MG and PS3.
I honestly don't understand the charm of the original graphics, they're fucking ugly. Haven't played at all, I'm just a goddamn graphics whore.

If the original was a option in the settings, I no doubt would choose it.
Every time I see these old popular visual novels graphics. The feelings I get from them is this organic soul expressions that just can't be nailed.
YU-NO is a great example.

You know the reason why a "generic graphic" became generic in the first place? Because people like them, obviously. Artists drew generic graphics because they sell. You're the weird one here.

< report >The ones that come with the PS3(?) port patch 07th Mod. I guess they're from PS3? I don't know what's the difference between the PS2 and PS3 ones even. The originals are horrible (sorry) and the Steam ones are just weird.
When I bought and was gonna read Higurashi VNs, my target was to get sprites that are closest to the anime's art because I love the anime and it's the reason I bought the VN.Last modified on 2020-10-17 at 17:29

It's not so much 'horrible' as it's more like amateurish. Seriously, when you seen much of recent graphics and art style, the original drawings seems like it was drawn by a middle-schooler for their art class.

Yeah well if you compare Higanbana's sprites to Higurashi's, the difference is incredible. It's almost hard to believe they're by the same artist. There's 10 years between them though so his skill improved a lot.

< report >I personally find these problems in the original are bad:
- Body proportions is all wrong.
- Lack of details in the clothing.
- Color and variety is bland and uninteresting.
It might not have much impact on new readers, but when you have seen the remakes and compare them, it's jarring.Last modified on 2020-10-17 at 17:49

< report >@6: Or it's just because generic and bland design is easy to achieve, artists don't have to think and not put as much work into it. And the people who buy it (BDs, figurines) are mostly fat otakus living in their mother's basement who only spend money on such things. So yeah, that design is targeting a former niche that has become the highest-spending one in the last 15 years and as such, helps to dictate what is "popular"/generic.
It's the same distortion that happened in Japan's music industry.

< report >@11: Okay fine, I still prefer generic but professional design rather than original but amateurish. No offense to Ryuukishi07, he is an amazing writer, but I prefer another artist do the character design in his games.Last modified on 2020-10-18 at 06:27

< report >Gonna go with the DS sprites here (which are falsely referred to as the PS3 sprites here, even though that's not the console they made their debut on). Or at least I would if VNDB wasn't rejecting my votes for some reason.
I don't think they're anything particularly special, but they don't make me want to gouge my eyes out like the original sprites. The Steam sprites have weird shading that makes them look metallic, and they often veer into moeblob territory. Can't comment on the PS2 sprites because I've barely seen them.

< report >Body proportions aside, the original graphics have cute and expressive faces. In comparison, new graphics are really bland and low-level, almost any random nukige nowadays has better sprites than that. Also, with new graphics, Rena somehow became a loli while in the original she totally wasn't one, lol.Last modified on 2020-10-19 at 03:51

< report >@16: She is about 15 years of age, some even say she is 13/14. Whatever it is, she clearly can be considered loli, so it's accurate.

< report >@17 Who the hell says she is 13/14? She is officially 15, this is too old to be considered as loli, and in the original sprites, both she and Mion/Shion are somehow busty for their age. When was the last time you've seen 15-16-year-old teenagers? Most girls stop growing at this age and look the same they would 5 years later (when it comes to body proportions).Last modified on 2020-10-25 at 09:26

< report >I think Higurashi characters looked generic originally, and so they have continued to look generic in remakes.
Umineko meanwhile has very distinct looking designs and so the remake designs also look unique and therefore don't get nearly as much criticism

< report >Original looks like something a kindergarten would do, I personally cannot take the story seriously if the graphics are that simple.
I think most people actually have a threeshold as to what they consider serious or immersive enough in visuals, hardly anyone would take a mystery story seriously if the characters were all stick figures.
On another hand, the remake is too moegeish, it doesn't fit Higurashi despite being more detailed, just my opinion.
So I go with the console version :)
