WTF is up with Google delisting .org for .com ?

< report >I'm not always good at remembering extensions and browse in private video so URLs aren't remember and rely on search engines...
So I type in VNDB and the first result is "VNDb | The Visual Novel Database | Visual Novel Games ..." so naturally I click it...
but it's not here at .org it's some impersonation site at the .com extension!
Why is it listed FIRST and .org doesn't even show up?
Google is acting really fishy lately, I google "Paheal" and it doesn't even show that website either.
It's like they're delisting anything that has sex scenes in it?
It seems very extreme doing it here though because unlike Paheal where that's out in the open, this has them hidden by default and you need to register and opt-in to see the lewd screenshots.Last modified on 2021-01-03 at 17:04

< report >Yes, it's because we're a porn site and the .com site has put more effort into SEO. It's also because Google sucks. I'm doubtful that we're going to get that ranking fixed by requiring an account to see lewd stuff, getting rid of that porn site label is likely going to be very hard.
What I did have in mind (for quite a while) is to create a separate domain with the same VNDB, just with the porn removed. Problem is: how will we ever get that new domain ranked in the search results? Google punishes sites that seem like copies of existing sites, and without lots of backlinks it's just not going to gain rank.
So basically, we're fucked. The result of an increasingly prude internet.
(On the other hand, if this convinces even a few people to stop relying on Google for everything, then maybe it's not even so bad after all. Not like other search engines are much better, though...)Last modified on 2021-01-03 at 17:15

< report >I just googled vndb, and vndb.org is the first result. No com. Heck even some github site and english wiki thingy appears before the .com
Google has a lot of ways deciding what's for you.

< report >org (for orgy because this is a porn site) in the top link and com (for communism because it doesn't work) in the third
the second is some github page for an vndb for android clientLast modified on 2021-01-04 at 02:52

< report >Most people who play VNs probably don't have safe search enabled. That'd be very counter intuitive. And if you somehow do, not sure if vndb is the place you want to be.

< report >It makes sense if .com is shown when Safe search is on. You are not supposed to see any explict content when it is on.
