< report >For comparison:
Old design(up-to-date version)

New design

Is anyone else unsatisfied with the new character designs, or that's just me?
I am not saying they should have used the exact same ones from 2000, they have much better ones that they updated over the years like in the first image.

Firstly, it's that they use the same drawing style from all the recent Type-Moon stuff, which became VERY generic looking after a number of entries. They should try harder an improve the art style in a direction that won't scream FSN or FGO (saberfaces).
Take for example Mahoutsukai no Yoru. They did a great job there with coming up with a fresh and fitting art style. Clearly more effort was put in that title and it proves they don't have just a single card when it comes to art style.

But most importantly, it's the fact that they look way juvenile (like teens) that disappoints me the most.
And before you say "yeah, they are high-schoolers", no, Arcueid and Ciel aren't. Mainly, their hair and outfits had a lot more character and uniqueness before, and something about Arcueid wearing just a high-scholler's mini skirt strikes me as alien.

And the way that Arcueid's smile looked before both beautiful and dangerous at the same time while now it just looks tame, it's quite the disappointment for me 😔
It's probably an unpopular opinion, I have seen almost no one speaking about it. But it had to be said 😤Last modified on 2021-01-10 at 12:08

< report >Uhm that was the one thing people immediately talked about when this game was revealed. Which must have been 10 years ago by now

< report >@shinytentacool I forgot to mention that I am especially interested in the opinions of already existing fans of the series. Because I am quite sure that new people would like the new designs more since they are probably not old dudes like myself and don't have a point of reference of what more mature feeling characters can add to a series.

I remember something like that 10 years ago and it made sense that people would complain about it back then, since all of them were already fans.

< report >As a fan of the original, the new ones look way better. Sure the old ones were nice for the time, but just from looking at them side by side; the new ones are miles better art wise.

< report >@xero95 Hmmm, perhaps we talk about different things. I did not mean stuff like resolution, coloring and how organic they are. Those are definitely stuff that needed improving. Where most of my dissatisfaction lies is in the design concept.
Everyone that didn't look like a high-scholler before or didn't have a 'saberface', was made to be so now. I see this as a problem since most of the original fan-base are old right now. In my case, I am starting to have less and less affinity for a cast of teens.
I put Arc's designs in my first post for comparison. The eyes, hair, clothes, everything is changed to make her look younger. Not like she looked much older than 20 before though...

Take Arcueid for example. She appeared in that form in the VN, games and even the anime. The anime was crappy, but I absolutely loved her design there, since it felt organic. And like 10 years later they come with a completely new design.
Now if you compare her to Saber, she is basically unchanged in 16 years and won't be so any time soon.

Perhaps they thought that Arcueid was not as popular since she didn't look like a 16 year old 😅? (hopefully not).Last modified on 2021-01-10 at 12:09

< report >Old Arc looks like a unique character, while new Arc is just Saber with a different haircut.
Anyone who actually likes the new copy-and-paste garbage Takeuchi produces needs his eyes checked.

bruh I like how you used the anime version of J.C.Staff lmao.

While I do personally like the olds one... I think for this one, I'm starting to be more fond of the new designs.

Really for me it's the in game designs that matters to me the most all the sprites and etc...

I was kinda hoping the tsukihime remake designs were where Takeuchi was putting his A game at but I think it's one of those lines I don't have to try as much since I have a cash cow lel.Last modified on 2021-03-29 at 08:55

< report >@asaki Lol, imagine being an artist that no matter how hard he tries his hand just ends up automatically drawing the same design over and over: saberfaces (¬‿¬)

< report >Takeuchi didn't even had to do anything , he could have just used his melty blood actress again current code artstyle and i would have been more than happy. Arc in her moon princess dress is literally gonna look jalter with golden hair. Shiki is basically shirou who dyed his hair black. Ciel is blue haired saber. Is asking for characters to have facial individuality too much.

< report >While I agree with #14 for the most part, my own opinion on the cast is a mixed one. Some of them I like on one character, others I don't like on this other character. While I am fond of the crisp new looks, I must say that Arcueid's hairstyle in her new design does make her look less unique and more generic than before. Personally, I would have voted that they kept her Melty Blood design.

Ciel's new design is an easy one for my tastes since her longer hair gives her a cuter, prettier look. Though I would understand if others took a better liking to her earlier short-haired design.

Hisui's design also has a very noticably Saber-like look. Even her design from 2000 had a more genuine and original look.

Kohaku and Akiha are more acceptable to me since their designs look decent overall and do not differ too drastically from their Melty Blood: Actress Again counterparts.

#12 - Shiki does indeed look like a black-haired Shirou in that image, more so in this one. They'll probably fumble on Nanaya Shiki's design as well should he appear here or in the upcoming Melty Blood Reboot. Only my opinion, but while not meant to have a very deep personality, Nanaya did have a dark grace to his style, appearance and attitude that makes Tohno look like any dull, generic schoolboy in comparison.

All things considered, I would vote on the Melty Blood/Actress Again Current Code designs over these new ones.

< report >Lot of saberface fans here according to the votes. Not really surprising with FGO and the newfags that are brought along for the ride with this "remake".

I think it's more of a demake at this point with the routes being split between games, the saberfaces, NVL format, and whatnot, but whatever.

< report >I'll be honest, Akiha with such a short neck is kind of jarring. Anyways, I prefer the original designs a bit more, but that's mostly due to nostalgia or maybe I just have something against hairbangs. The only design that looks drastically worse to me is Shiki's design though.

< report >That sucks. Faces of characters look like made by Ctrl+C & Ctrl+V. Old ones were much more unique, more realistic. This variant is worse.Last modified on 2021-07-30 at 14:53

< report >I've voted for the old design, but not for this "up to date" ugly thing from the anime that OP linked, but for the original character design from the 2000 Tsukihime. I'd be all for a more modern look of the characters, but what we got lack the unique details and atmosphere of the original.
