How is it possible to fail this much?

< report >Squares around the faces. Squares around the faces. This is the first time I see such ridiculous bug. Bug that is still not taken care of and probably never will. Dev unresponsive on the steam forum.
I use Windows Seven and the game crashes the moment I open it. Yes, I can't play it. Working fine on Windows 10, though.

One month later, the steam page can boast of having... four reviews. The amount of threads in the forum is pretty much the same. The sales must be a disaster and it will of course have a consequence on future licensing.
I am not putting everything on MG's back because I am sure most people don't care about Liar-soft when they can buy their precious moege but releasing such a sloppy release with such a visible bug and not doing anything about it, well, I cannot not put part of the blame on their back.

I am so sad because Liar-soft doesn't need such a screw up to fail but it's like the coffin was ready before they were even given a chance.Last modified on 2021-07-15 at 23:17

< report >The lack of proofreading in the english translation is MG's fault though. And I'm certain I saw people warn them about the face bug long before release but they either didn't or couldn't fix it.

< report >Oh yeah, there was someone on their discord saying they took more than 100 screenshots of "typos and weird doubled words".

I would be interested in a technical explanation about "why we can't fix the squares".
People say that you need to play it in its original resolution but I also read someone in MG's server saying that "even in 720p mode, that square box does appear randomly sometimes, but disappears when you shift to the next scene".

I can't play it anyway.

< report >I've looked at the files. All the facial expressions are saved as pngs the size of the fullsprite (around 800 by 1200 depending on character) but most of the image is pure black, set to transparent, except for a little rectangle where the face is. When the engine tries to scale up the texture, a tiny bit of the surrounding black color gets blended in and then appears as a faint fuzzy line.

This is a known RenPy issue that I've definitely seen talked about but don't 100% remember the technical details for so I don't know if it varies by version or if there's any way to change how the texture scaling works.

The problem can be avoided completely by using full sprites for each expression. This will obviously balloon the filesize and might be impractical.

Other possibilities - add a buffer area around the visible part of the expression which matches the full sprite, masked transparent, so that when the texture scales up it blends with that instead of with black. Or crop the images down so they don't have any black around them and use code to position them over the sprite correctly.

Don't know if either would work perfectly but they seem possible to me. I'm not dedicated enough to try and write a fixpatch though.

< report >Oh yeah, the squares around the faces was a really odd bug. Probably a problem when trying to scale the individual sprite parts instead of putting them together in original resolution and then scale the whole sprite. Still a minor issue compared to the other problems of the VN like the writing, plot and characters... -.-

< report >@3 Yeah, that with the album was me. I'm shortly before the end of the true route and I somehow can't bring myself to finish it because I would rip apart the shoddy QC job they did (being a QC myself this just hurts a lot). I want to compile the album for my review so it'll take a bit. Dunno if I release it or just send it to their email though. Latter would be fairer because they might have had crunch time and I know that some things topple over the edge during that.Last modified on 2021-07-20 at 18:18

< report >Crunch time? Nobody forced them to do this shit. It's on them. Especially QC. It's not something you do at the last minute and you are clearly saying that there was what amount to no QC. It's been five years we wait on Sona-Nyl. If they fucked up the QC, will you say that it was because of a crunch?

To me, this release was botched, dumped, and the aftercare skipped.

< report >MG could at least get the liar-soft titles people actually give a shit about
Where's Kusarihime? Fairytale Requiem? Hikari no Valusia, Sona-nyl? (I know they're supposedly working on that, but it's been FIVE years)
Also even if they have Fan TLs, Forest, Sekien no Inganock and Cannonball are on the more popular side for the company and are all very good titles , I know since I've played through them, just because they have fan TLs doesn't mean they can't be picked up

Dumping a title like this sucks and all, but wasn't it an unpopular game to begin with? Rather than blaming them for doing a poor job, I think it was a poor idea to pick it up to begin with...Last modified on 2021-07-20 at 21:54

< report >Okay I was just motivated enough by my desire to be right about everything to do some test hacking. I was slightly wrong about the reason for the black boxes. Unfortunately it looks like the code has been written to make this more awkward to fix than it should be.

The problem is that the sprites are made in two pieces, a base sprite *with a hole cut out of it* where the face would go, and a face sprite.

Then, instead of compositing them into a single sprite and scaling, they are scaling both images and displaying them separately, like #7 thought. So the transparency around the edge of the expression and the transparency around the hole in the base sprite don't quite line up and background color leaks through.

The obvious solution would be - fill in the hole in the base sprite. You could do this and it would make all the boxes go away instantly. Unfortunately it creates a new problem, because since the two pieces are drawn separately, every time the sprite fades in and out both pieces fade separately, and if the base sprite is now solid underneath the face, then when it fades the face doesn't fade at the same speed as the rest of the sprite. Whoops.

The real solution is to recode the game to composite the sprites correctly, and that's beyond what I can do with a quick hack.Last modified on 2021-07-21 at 12:29

< report >@10 Dunno if you really have a say in what a company wants to give you for licenses. But okay, the game was botched, i didn't want to say it because I still like it and also I have a lot of respect for the translator behind it, ZackZeal - well had, but that is an entirely different story.Last modified on 2021-07-20 at 23:48
