< report >Ok, I wanted to read a good mystery plotge for a while and since all re-releases and PS3-fication mods released for some time and vns in my backlog started to dry up I was thinking its time to give this a shot... maybe...

Except for the fact I am still traumatized after my experience with Umineko -_-. Sigh... Well, I didn't hate absolutely everything about it but I am definitely far from liking it as well. Hell, I am even far from being ambivalent to it actually.

What I didn't like about Umineko particularly is its surrealism, metaness and bleakness (you can see my venting and what I thought/felt right after I finishing it here). Another thing I didn't like about it is how its like story in story. I mean, if I managed to beat a very hard game but if it tells me "Congratulations but it was all dream" at the end that would tick me off.

How similar Higurashi to Umineko in these regards? If I hated these parts of Umineko will I hate Higurashi as well? Try to not give spoilers as much as possible, I am ok with technical spoilers (e.g. its an Utsuge) but try to not give content spoilers (e.g. this person is villain).Last modified on 2021-07-18 at 17:21

< report >Well, there is no 'meta-ness' in Higurashi, so you are safe in this regard. There is no story-within-a-story premise, however the character list is chock-full of unreliable narrators, hence the events that are portrayed to have happened might not have happened at all.

The novel is also much less bleak than Umineko, and the last chapter is positively optimistic. If you want a story more grounded in reality than Umineko, but still pretty wacky, Higurashi is exactly that.

< report >Seems like you should be fine with Higurashi. #2 is right and there is basically no stuff that you didn't like in Umineko. You might find some other problems but I feel like it's worth giving it a chance.

< report >Thanks for info guys :) I think I'll try my chances again with Ryuukishi. I might write my impressions here after finishing it.

< report >Definitely give it a try. I for one also felt the same as you #1. Umineko drove me nuts with all its meta BS towards the end but Higurashi has a much better ending with a proper closure. I actually enjoyed Higurashi more towards the end, but the same can't be said for Umineko which I enjoyed immensely in the beginning and then hated it by the end.

I feel similar to how the Japanese fans didn't like it and I haven't read anything by Ryukishi07 after Umineko because I can't stand his writing anymore.Last modified on 2021-08-04 at 00:30
