< report >I go with poll. Majority prefer as is. I see this website like a wikipedia which doesn't have a huge user social aspect for its main purpose. I go there for quick and fast information. Adding more stuff not need makes website less appealing imo.

< report >hello slashslayer (#24)
could you elaborate that? i don't know what you meant by any of those terms so i can't make an argument
when i think of catfishers i think of boring people who pretend to be women online (sometimes they have malicious intent)
when i think of role-players i think of less boring people who pretend to be anything other than women online

supposing an about me field is added to profile pages...some users will certainly make up whatever they put there
supposing a sex field is added to profile pages...some male users will certainly set it to female (or vice versa)
supposing a date of birth field is added to profile pages...some users will certainly make themselves younger or older than they actually are

this opinion doesn't nullify the other one
i was not trying to nullify anything...i just simply wanted to state that i prefer the current state of profile pages

there are plenty of sites that have the options of "legacy" layouts and "modern" layouts
i did not think of that despite using a site (reddit) with such a feature on a daily basis

< report >#27, hello and thank you for answering,
Adding personalization will attract people pretending they're something they don't are
but isn't this inevitable from the very beginning? for instance, there's already a lot of people who pretend to know japanese here apparently(who are called "larpers" from what i've seen), as well as many people who use their freedom of speech here to deceive others as some kind of joke, for example the "Pay me to translate MTL descriptions here" thread, which was made for laughs although taken seriously by many
that, summed up with the fact that vndb community isn't so much large, probably wouldn't generate too much of a problem for mods too, since the users could just report what they see that doesn't follow the guidelines as we (mostly) do already
i think every new feature a site like this one can possibly have will be able to be distorted with malicious intent, one good example of this is the new "play time vote" in which the users decide the general and usual play time it'd take to finish a VN through consensus, and as we've seen it's been mostly a success so far, but still also had people abusing it. at the end of the day, it's just up to moderation and most users to cooperate responsibily for the features to work

i understand that adding more features will always come with a risk, but i think it's really worthy in this case

< report >MAL created a large number of "anime fans" who watched anime to inflate their online personality with the amount of hours watched and other shit. Here, its still relatively anonymous and the number of hours played or visual novels read doesn't mean anything. I prefer this style, not people desperately trying to outdo the other or their "friends".

< report >Oh no, now I can never be an online personality best known for consuming large amounts of porn.

< report >I would want this, yes please. It's annoying as hell to look at your friends lists on here

< report >Browsers have a bookmark feature, use it.
Most browsers even allow you to organise bookmarks into folders, so I see no need for a feature like that.
Just ask you friend for their list url and save it.

you'd be free to block or ignore any kind of people for any reason you want even if the site had a following system. with the current style, people who just want to genuinely interact with other people with similar tastes are the only ones who lose something, mostly

a counter argument to your entire point was already made in this very thread:
Do you really expect me to keep finding my friends' pages manually in order to see what they rated a game I recommended to them? So inconvenient

coming across someone's list updates through some page in the website is much more convenient than manually having to check constantly in order to see if any change in such list happened at all

< report >I agree, at least a 'following' or 'friend' list in which you can store your friends' profiles. It's annoying to have to go through Users queries and remember their exact usernames just to check their profiles.
