< report >(first sorry for my approximative english )

I've made this post to complain about something that I find really dumb in the search function

When you search a game with a specific tag, in the search menu you have those 3 buttons

"Hide spoilers" "Show minor spoilers" "Spoil me!"

And those are a not that great feature that need to be removed or change of it work
Why ? because of those 3 button, I just realized that I've missed a LOT of games while I was searching for specifics tags

Let me explain :

First let's see what those button do :

Each game here have a list of tags that tell you what content is in the game
So for exemple, if you want a game with a female protagonist, you click on the tag "female protagonist" and you will have the list of every game here with the "female protagonist" tag

Now for the 3 button, you've probably also seen them on a game page, in the list of tags on a game page you also have the 3 same button
"Hide spoilers" "Show minor spoilers" "Spoil me!"

By default it's the "hide spoilers" that is enabled
And if you click on "Show minor spoilers" or "Spoil me!", new tags will appear in the list

Why they were hidden ? because those new tag that just appeared are "SPOILER" tags , they spoil the story of the game so the website prefer to ask you if you want to be spoiled by seeing those tags
For now, it's a really good feature...

But when you search for a specific tag, you also have those 3 button, and what's those button do is that they HIDE games that have the specific tag you search as a SPOILER TAG

For exemple, if you search for a game with the tag "death of protagonist"
If on any game that have this tag, it have it as a SPOILER tag, then you will not see this game in you search result
Because by default, it's the "Hide spoilers" that is enabled
So because of this default thing, you will miss a game that have the tag you want, just because the website doesn't want to "spoil" you that this game have this tag, so it didn't show you this game in the list of games with this tag....

So you're gonna say : " yeah but you just have to know how those button work and that's it "
True... but seriously... this website have one of the most complex search system I've ever seen, I've been here for a few years and there is still function that I have no idea how they work...

And having a option that can hide so much stuff from you, enabled by default, it's really not a good idea...

When I first came here, I didn't understood what those 3 button were supposed to do, because the first time I tried to use them, I searched for a tag that wasn't tagged as a "SPOILER" in any games
So when I searched for this tag, the search result give me a list of 40 games, I then clicked on "spoil me" just to see what was this button, and I still had the same list of 40 games, so I assumed that this button didn't change anything when I search by tags and I moved on...

It only recently that I tried to better understand the advanced search, and while searching for a other tag and testing all different search function, I once again tried to click on "spoil me" and this time, the tag I was searching was a SPOILER tag on half the games that have this tag...

And so I realized that in all those years here, I've missed tons of good game just because the tag I wanted to find was a SPOILER tag on those games...

To come back to the "death of protagonist" tag , this one is a really big SPOILER tag
the default search result show 101 games with this tag, the "spoil me" results show 758 games with this tag !!
So that's 657 games that I would have never heard of if I didn't try again to see if those "spoil" button do something !

And I'm sure I'm far from the only one that didn't know how this worked
( well maybe not in those who will read this post, because most of the people in the "forum" section of this website are generally advanced user with good knowledge about how the site work )

So here's my suggestion :

- either disable this function while searching for a specific tag, or make the "spoil me" the default setting, because that make no sense at all to hide a game with this tag if YOU SPECIFICALLY SEARCH FOR A GAME WITH THIS TAG
it's like asking google what movie have a ending where half the universe is dusted away, and have google not showing infinity war in it's search result just because the specific stuff that you want to see is a spoiler

- or have a EXPLANATION on what all search function do when you hover your mouse over it

What do you think ?
Have anyone here experienced the same problem ?

Thanks for taking time to read itLast modified on 2022-04-23 at 15:35

< report >my English was bad when I first came here (and still is to this day) and I immediately figured what those buttons for...
I don't know about you, but removing a very useful feature just because you didn't understand how it works sound very silly to me. you can even search a very specific theme with it, here an example, VNs with hidden Imouto Heroine (set to show Imouto heroine with Major Spoiler only: link)

although I agree that the advanced search interface is not really intuitive and need to be reworked a little. I mean, those "invert", "and", "or", Icons, and other technicalities are a real pain to figure out.Last modified on 2022-04-23 at 14:54

< report >okay maybe it's just me because of my bad first experience when I searched for a tag and that it changed nothing between "hide spoiler" and "spoil me" just because this tag is not a spoiler in any games...
