How... heavy is this game?

< report >I completed MUSICUS, partially completed deardrops, started kira kira and bokuten at the same time. After bokuten I'm now scared of overdrive games. For some context I stopped taking depression meds in the middle of my bokuten playthrough and it didn't go well at all lol.

I'd love to finish kira kira but while I avoided spoilers I heard it has some depressing routes that go beyond classic nakiges, so I don't really know what to do.

< report >Not as heavy as Bokuten, but if you're not willing to go through all the routes then avoid it because i'm not sure if you can handle Kirara's normal route.

< report >My first VN ever, so I might have a bias.
Chie and Sarina's routes have some drama, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Kirari, however, was a rollercoaster. She has two routes: the normal one is quite heavy, but the true one (obtained after finishing the previous routes) is worth it.
Now, is it heavy like Bokuten, not really. But it depends on how you feel for the characters.Last modified on 2022-09-23 at 11:51

< report >Rawdogging nakiges off your meds, I commend your bravery. As #3 said Chie and Sarina are safe but stay far away from kirari, better yet go read yuzusoft titles

< report >I would avoid Overdrive in general if you want to avoid sad moments. Even the more comedic ones can have some pretty intense moments in their main routes. Kirari in Kira Kira is quite a trip, I'll tell you that, but even the more comedic Edelweiss still has the Haruka route which is infamous in its own right. At least Bokuten is pretty upfront with how sad it can theorectically be instead of having a mostly comedic common route.

< report >@3 @4 @5 Heh that tells me everything I want to know. Thank you all. I know that even musicus that's kind of tame made me feel weird at the end of one of the routes, but it was a weird feeling, it just didn't make a lot of sense. Like unneeded drama. But you've told me enough. I'd avoid this one for now.

I wanted to play Edelweiss because it looked totally lighthearted but I assume it has some hidden dark disturbing route somewhere.

It's just crazy that being on meds makes a VN completely bearable even if depressing, and being out of meds made them unbearable at the point they become nightmare fuel (literally in my case).

Thank you again, I love VNs and I hate having to ask this kind of stuff.Last modified on 2022-09-23 at 04:19

< report >@6 Alicesoft titles might be something you may like. They don't tend to be suddenly depressing in a nakige kind of way, but they aren't afraid to have wtf drama moments in otherwise comedic works like Evenicle or Sengoku Rance. I don't really have good recommendations on anything purely comedic since I don't really like moege. 2 of the funniest works I have read are Rewrite and Little Busters, but they are Key works with all of the expected depression that comes with that.

< report >@7 That's fine, I still enjoy good dramas, murder mysteries, etc and light nakiges like Kinkoi, I also consider Key works light nakiges (I don't think it classifies as a nakige but I love Rewrite). I'd love to go back to reading VNs without restrictions but it is what it is, at least for now.

For some reason Overdrive games hit me harder than the rest, I don't know if it's because the writers are good or what but I get pretty emotionally involved with their characters.Last modified on 2022-09-23 at 04:37

< report >As I said abode, it really depends on your feelings for the characters. If something bad happens to your favorite character, it'll hit harder.
Edelweiss was good, with some drama. But unlike Kira Kira, the fantasy setting might help make it better.
