Yup it is the Citizen Kane of Visual Novels.
@engix Citizen Kane is considered the greatest fil m of all time so when you refer to something being the best you call it the Citizen Kane, like Watchmen is the Citizen Kane of comics.
@yorhel MAD is America's oldest and most famous humor magazine, they have a show on Cartoon Network.

Citizen Kane is known/important because/famous for revolutionizing/being a turning point in the way films (and filmmaking) are, not for being the best movie of all time or shit like that (of course it also is highly regarded, but that's besides the point).

In this way prior Key/Tactics games are more Citizen Kane-ish for pretty much creating Nakiges.Last modified on 2011-09-20 at 11:00

@emmanuelvr
In Visual Novel history To Heart could be considered the Birth of a Nation (Film) or Yellow Kid (Comics) while Kanon/Clannad are the Citizen Kane (Film) or Watchmen (Comic) for how it changed the instrustry. Citizen Kane and Watchmen were works that made people realize what these forms could do and the public first see these forms as works of "art", it was Kanon that showed the world what visual novels could do but Clannad that showed the world it was art.

... It's not that I don't agree with you guys about the Citizen Kane/Clannad thingie but... are you really not seeing the trolling intent in that picture?! O_o?

@#9 I only just noticed that the MAD guy in the middle is wearing what looks to be Haruhi's uniform... other than that I'm completely oblivious to any trolling. Woe is me.

Listen, this is MAD. The guys are making a living by satirizing and making fun of anything and everything, often playing for the lowest common denominator. Are you REALLY thinking that this was some sort of "acknowledgment" of Clannad and visual novels in general...?
...
Well, okay, I'm not its creator so I can't say for sure, but for me, it seems like just another vitriolic stab at hight-brow and "artsy" things while saying "Pfff! This shit is no better than us, bitches!"
...
But again, that's just my interpretation...Last modified on 2011-09-20 at 22:23

Well this is a fan letter someone sent in the the person who drew it appearently knows of Clannad and Haruhi, it's just MAD who is commenting on it. But this is significant even if this is a fan thing because this is probably the first time MAD discussed (briefly) about a visual novel.
