I haven't played the fighting games, but since when is P4 Dancing All Night a controversial entry? I've played it few years ago and it clearly has lengthy uninterrupted VN segments between the rhythm portions which use a classic ADV mode for dialogue, 2D character sprites in front of 2D backgrounds and even CGs. It is as much a VN as Utawarerumono.Last modified on 2021-01-14 at 09:32

since when patches added to releases?Since never, and *poof* it's gone.
but since when is P4 Dancing All Night a controversial entryI also cannot understand why people keep bringing that game up. From what I have seen on Youtube, it fulfills every criteria for a hybrid VN, with plenty of narration, large uninterrupted plot sequences and short dance sequences.

This got a bit longer than I intended, so allow me to apologize in advance.
How different versions should be represented in VNDB is something I've been wondering about, since VNDB contains quite a few cases like this.
Based on your answer, I'm guessing that the patches r61495, r63144, and r63868 should all be deleted, and changes such as additional languages should be folded back into the original release (r61113)? Presumably that also applies to r61730, r61729, which are marked as complete releases but are just subsequent numbered versions of the oldest release (r61731).
But what about fan patches that are released in increments, such as for Akatsuki no Goei and Hatsukoi 1/1? Should each new patch get a new release or should they be folded into one release? Similarly, does a "polished version of previous patch" deserve its own release (r59868) or should it be folded into the original release (r73535)?
The guidelines for adding/editing releases (d3) do not touch on versions like the above, so perhaps that could be clarified to help reduce the number of spurious additions.
There are also a lot of cases where one release has been noted to have been superseded by another, some of which should perhaps be removed (see e.g. r50302):

|< report >Okay, here we go:|
Based on your answer, I'm guessing that the patches r61495, r63144, and r63868 should all be deleted, and changes such as additional languages should be folded back into the original release (r61113)?r61495, r63144 should be deleted, as they seem to only be bugfixes. r63868 adds JP translation, hence it deserves a separate release entry. However, that VN entry is a bit of a mess. Itchio does not distribute separate patches, but rather full builds. That means r63868 should be turned into a standalone entry with both JP and EN options.
The addition of a new language, especially on platforms like Steam or Itchio, where a full build is distributed, calls for the creation of a new release entry with all the available languages. In that case, the superseded entries are not removed.
Presumably that also applies to r61730, r61729, which are marked as complete releases but are just subsequent numbered versions of the oldest release (r61731).Will have to investigate that. Majorly improved demos sometimes are given a new release, but in this case that might not be necessarily. The guidelines in relation to demos are much less strict, or rather nonexistent... :-(
But what about fan patches that are released in increments, such as for Akatsuki no Goei and Hatsukoi 1/1? Should each new patch get a new release or should they be folded into one release? If the same group is releasing the patch in increments, then only a single release entry is maintained.
For example, for Akatsuki no Goei, only a single patch by Daybreak Translations will remain when it's completed. The current partial will be removed upon completion. For Hatsukoi the situation is more complicated. the first patch translated the full game but not the append disc, the second patch also translated the append, and the third patch had major retranslations. Thus all three entries are maintained. Re-translations also deserve a new entry.
Similarly, does a "polished version of previous patch" deserve its own release (r59868) or should it be folded into the original release (r73535)?Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai is a borderline case and could be done either way, Not sure how extensive the script revisions are. I don't have a strong case for one or two releases.
There are also a lot of cases where one release has been noted to have been superseded by another, some of which should perhaps be removed (see e.g. r50302)This case I have already addressed above. This is a release that has been superseded by the addition of a new language. In that case the superseded release is not removed.Last modified on 2021-01-14 at 19:04
