It's been a while since the last update ( usual, lately), but I really wanted to put up a new version before the new year, so here it is! It's just a minor update, though:

- Character filters!
You can now search for characters based on their gender, measurements, blood type, role, traits, etc. I should also note that it wasn't me who implemented this feature, it was my roommate who happened to be bored and wanted something to code on. This proves again that you don't have to have my brain in order to contribute code to VNDB!

- Duplicate detection when adding a VN
When creating a new VN entry, you will first be asked to input its title(s) and aliases. A database search is then performed before you can continue. Since this searches through VN items that have previously been deleted, it's also a good way to find deleted entries and see why they have been deleted.

- Everyone can edit the character database
It's open to the public now!

And then to the second part of this announcement: The Happy-New-Year-thing that happens every year. As is customary, have some end-of-the-year stats for VNDB!
- Database stats
- And the boring visitor stats: 2011 (Check t1066 for earlier years)

milo: It's probably your browse cache, hit refresh a few times and you should get the real main page.

Great stats and a great year. We should also do a retrospective of the year in mirror of the released translations, but I'm way too tired for something like that right now... Maybe next year. :P

Until then, have a happy new year everyone!

P.S.: 356 days till the end of the world! Enjoy thinking about your impending doom, mortals! Whahahaha! >:D

Guys, what you did was a list, not a retrospective... -.-'

Whatever, here's the past year in my eyes: Glorious!
2011 gave us full translations for countless games, both good and bad, but surprisingly enough, the former most definitely outweighs the latter. So, let me give out my rewards!

MLA and YU-NO... Seriously, this year gave us full translations to two of the most highly rated VNs, and both of them lived up to the hype. Still, I name MLA the best translated VN of this year, simply because it was consistently great, while YU-NO had some serious flaws every here and there...

We also had quite a few surprises as well. Demonbane finally got released, Mangagamer finally learned how to quality check (though they are apparently still learning the finer details, but hey, it's a step up!), but the biggest surprise of the year goes to Monster Girl Quest, a game that quickly became the highest rated nukige on the site with it's interesting characters and varied "encounters".

Speaking of nukiges, yuri fans probably loved this year, as it gave us 4(!) translated Sono Hanabira titles, the first "working" OELVN, Sugar's Delight, AND Katahane. However, strangely enough, we only had a handful of full-out nukiges translated this year, at least compared to previous trends... Weird... 0_o

In contrary of the lack of nukiges, we got quite a few "heavy" titles. The Kara no Shoujo, the full Higurashi Kai, the aforementioned MLA, Shinkkoku no Sharoth, YU-NO (to some extent), A-Profile, Steins;Gate and the full Umineko Chiru... One could even say that this was the year of serious readers. :P

As for the mid-range, we had quite a few pleasant, if not outstanding VNs as well. Mangagamer's release of Koihime Musou, we got two Galaxy Angels sequels, the various DC sequels/alts, topped by Osanadai at the end of the year. Romantic dramedy-VNS that weren't really great, but still good for those rainy days when you just need something to keep your spirits up...

This year's WTF award goes to Mankai Chirarism Dai 1 Wa, though it was almost usurped by Milk Pot... Any objections? :P

I would also like to give honorary mentions to two other VNs, both running in the "more or less fluffy stuff centering around a group of friends" category that I couldn't mention anywhere else: Little Busters, which I couldn't play yet, and Majikoi, which is not fully translated yet (sadly...).

Finally, the head-scratchers:
-Edelweiss 2.0? I appreciate the effort, MG, but you should have done this years ago, or better yet, make a proper translation on the first go... -.-'

-Go-Go-Nippon!? I mean, okay, I still appreciate the effort, but I feel kind of looked down upon here... -.-'

-Eien no Aselia got a proper release? Okay, honestly, did anyone buy it? I'm not saying it's not worth the money, I loved the shit out of that VN when the patch came out, but seriously, who's going to buy that after the patch has been out for more than twenty months? -.-'

-MangaGamer? What the hell?! Out of all the games the released in 2010, five were re-releases, four were mindless nukiges and they only released two decent VNs (KnS and Koihime, though the latter is debatable). Just what the hell?! MG, at this point, is pretty much THE face of commercial VN translations on the west, and we got these statistics? Talk about changing the public image of the medium with that... -.-'

-Sentou Gakuen? MMOVN? Is this a joke? Because it's not funny... -.-'

-What? OELVNs? Those only exist in fairy-tales, what are you talking about? -.-'

-Love Plus?! I mean... LOVE PLUS?! Whyyyyyyyyy-*beep* A critical system error has occurred. The data you have been working with was presumably lost. Have a nice day... -.-'

MG, at this point, is pretty much THE face of commercial VN translations on the west, and we got these statistics?

It's not even been 3 years (?) since they started. but since you yourself hath said that MG "is THE FACE of commercial VN translations", I'd say they really progressed.

Albeit of obvious flows that I prefer not mentioning. I Give my thanks to Captain Obvious for him explaining this in my place XD

Edit: as for A profile, I really really have mixed feelings for this. I made my own utsuge route based on the scene before Rizu's ending scene. Played it on my mind, then BAM! Because of this I'm giving it a 10.Last modified on 2012-01-01 at 17:55

It has more to do with the fact that there are practically no other really active commercial VN translation companies out there. JAST is pretty much living on releasing already fan-translated works with the occasional nukiges every here and there... and I guess that's it. So yeah, JAST might have better titles (or will have, once they actually release all that Nitro+ stuff they have been licensing) but MG actually HAS an image that can be identified, and are more well-known (at least as far as I can see)...Last modified on 2012-01-01 at 17:56
