In-between update number #25: VNDB is now available in Italian (both the Interface and all the FAQ/guideline pages)
It's a nice surprise to see that VNDB is now available in my native language as well.^^
I haven't tested it all (I simply changed the language in the homepage), but I saw a couple of errors. One is unimportant: in Italian is a mistake to do the plural of foreign words (though, it's not like everyone knows this) and seeing "visual novels" instead of "visual novel" in an Italian text is a bit funny for me. But as I've just said this is unimportant.
What really bugs me is that in the home the word "hours" is not translated:
Messaggi Recenti

6 min fa Search error? da nothingplz
27 min fa All Ages Fandisk... Ho... da smelvertising
2 hours fa VNDB 2.22 and a Happy ... da yorhel
2 hours fa Anime da horseband
2 hours fa BBCS - Windows da kiru
2 hours fa Patch location da horseband
4 hours fa MGQ2 review & GD da gabezhul
4 hours fa Searching for 'ecchi' VNs da lulalala
6 hours fa English Translation is... da orophin
8 hours fa I cant be the only one... da thajunk
In Italian "hour" (singular) is "ora" and "hours" (plural) is "ore".

Edit: I noticed that "Available at" in VN pages is not translated. I suggest "Disponibile su".Last modified on 2012-04-03 at 21:02

Can't be translated currently. For the other suggestions, let me notify the translator. :-)

< report >I wanted to ask this on IRC, but sadly I'm writing from home and I don't have the luxury to sit in front of the machine for more than a few minutes at a time. But I digress, here's the question:

Could we have a simple search-box for the discussion board? We currently have 2100+ threads, and it can sometimes get a little annoying when I want to look up an old thread for one reason or another, especially in the general and VNDB boards, since those aren't linked to any games or producers or anything that would help the search.

It would be enough if it only looked around amongst the thread-names, and I'm sure others would find it useful as well.

< report >Another update:

I've hacked into a few powerful servers with lots of bandwidth and installed a botnet so that I can load-balance the static files of VNDB without paying for it. As such, I made a change to the hotlinking policy:

Hotlinking (e.g. direct linking, embedding, whatever) to any of the files on the s.vndb.org and s2.vndb.org domains is now allowed. You won't get the "Sorry, vndb.org does not allow hotlinking" image anymore when trying that.

(That said, I'm not sure I can fully guarantee the stabity of the static URLs - they've been very stable for the past 2 years or so and I'll try to keep it that way, but, you know, things might change.)Last modified on 2012-04-26 at 08:09

< report >Cluttered or not, it gets the job done, which is to make a single page, which can be used to fairly fast figure out what is identical and what is different between different releases for the same VN. Think of it kind of like the relations tab. It's not something you look at all the time, but it is nice to have for getting an overview in certain cases.

It is fine and an awesome help for comparison of releases!
And it fits the 'cluttered' style of our lovely database perfectly.
If someone needs fine art there is still the Metropolitan.

Surprisingly I'm not bothered about myself :p
I'm not bothered about the feedback either. I know it can be cluttered at times, but it's rather hard to display cluttered data in a non-cluttered way.

I think it will become less cluttered over time as people are aware of this comparison when editing. Example:
Utawarerumono release page. Check out the two PS2 releases. The notes are almost identical, but not 100%, which is why they are written individually.
The same page in the sandbox beta of VNDB. I just changed the text a little to make the notes for PS2 identical to show how they merged.
(yes I know it would look better if they had equal height. I just noticed this issue)
If people think about this while editing and use identical text/settings, then the output will end up being less cluttered as the number of cells will decrease. Most columns merges cells with identical content. Sure removing the text telling the difference like in this case is bad and defeats the purpose of the whole page. The goal is to make differences stand out.

If someone needs fine art there is still the Metropolitan
I think the majority of people reading this would likely prefer fine arts in a VN.Last modified on 2012-07-03 at 16:21

< report >Oh, I was just giving my impressions. It's fine for it to be cluttered, that's not really important (and by disabling unneeded columns, you can easily make it appear not-so-cluttered). I do like this new feature, though. :-)
