< report >In between update #62-66: All images (VN covers, character images, and screenshots) are now processed synchronously. This means that you should not see any "processing image" or "generating thumbnail" messages anymore. I hope I didn't break anything with these changes...

EDIT: And damn, the last "real" VNDB update was more than a year ago. :-/Last modified on 2013-01-05 at 13:26

< report >yorhel, I can't upload screenshots for some reason. Is it because of the changes you're making?

< report >That probably means I broke something. What does "I can't upload screenshots" mean? Do you get an error message? What do you see exactly?

EDIT: Ah, I think I got it. Try to select / unselect the NSFW warning of one of the images right after you've uploaded the images and before hitting 'submit'.Last modified on 2013-01-05 at 14:30

< report >No, it just comes back to the main page of the novel without the screenshots I intended to add and without the edit notification.

Ah, I think I got it. Try to select / unselect the NSFW warning of one of the images right after you've uploaded the images and before hitting 'submit'.

Yeah, that worked, thank you!Last modified on 2013-01-05 at 14:40

< report >Is there something wrong with the VN list status options? It's listing options like "Obtained" and "On loan" instead of the old options like "Finished" and "Dropped"Last modified on 2013-01-21 at 21:43

< report >There is nothing wrong. You are looking at the status options for releases. Playing/Finished/Stalled/Dropped are the status options for VNs.

< report >@yirba actually you are the one who is wrong. Check the dropdown menue on the actual page for a vissual novel (ie not the list where that screenshot is from), the problem is there just as he described it.

< report >Fixed. Looks like I broke that while merging all "unknown" translation strings into a single entry yesterday. Thanks for reporting.

< report >Not sure where to put this, so might as well just post it here.

Anyway, just a small suggestion - the ability to feed our VN list. I believe it will be a helpful feature, not sure what the others think though..

< report >You mean provide RSS/ATOM feeds of VN lists? I'm not sure why you'd ever need to use such a thing, and I think feeds are generally best suited for subscriptions that feature actual content, such as news websites or blogs.

Still, the API does allow access to VN lists, so anyone can set up such a system if they really wanted to.

< report >However belatedly it may be, happy new year to everyone!
I'm still relatively new here, but I look forward to getting to know all the users and fully utilizing this ever so useful databse whilst I begin to read Japanese novels in my endaovouring mission to learn the language!

P.S -- Feel proud of your site; anything's better than that spam and troll site: "MyAnimeList", *sigh*. ;)

< report >^While I do completely agree that Yorhel and the core editor/moderator team can be proud of this site and their work on it, I don't see you reason dissing MAL that hard.

< report >Sure, MAL used to have good discussions way back when -GD- was around, but now... There's more pessimism there than emo's on haloween (terrible comparison but still... '-_-) and it all just eventuates into attempts to throw any potentially good topics back in the gutter. Besides, the insulting nature of MAL has always annoyed me.Last modified on 2013-02-15 at 01:20

< report >I wouldn't compare MAL and VNDB at all. They have different purposes, a different community, intended for different people…

Anime isn't really discussed here. I suppose what I'm saying is that VNDB is by no means a substitute for a website such as MAL.

< report >MAL...Most users in there can be divided into two categories. Either they're a brainless fanboys or they're very pessimistic and bitter.

< report >We, on the other hand, have:
-Noobs (not newbies, those guys are cool, I am talking about REAL noobs here)
-Cynical assholes
-Less cynical assholes
-Non-cynical assholes
-Lolicons and other assorted funny guys
-The occasional extremely hyperactive and stupid dumb-guy
I wonder whether we or MAL has it better. :PLast modified on 1970-01-01 at 00:00

< report >Okay, a quick question that saves me opening up a new thread. What are the limitations to the things you can discuss in -GD- here?

For example, if I wanted to open up a thread that discusses human nature and the effect historical recording has had on us, would I be able to do so?

< report >I'd say as long as you can keep the opening post *somewhat* related to VN-s you can get away with it. The thread will be either dead in the water in a page or two, or will be derailed completely anyway. Seriously, VNDB have a habit off going in weird, weird directions.

Most Handsome & Most Beautiful VN Characters -> ethical and philosophical debate on good VS. evil

Internet censorship -> flamewar on the age on consent with tidbits of religion, paedophile priests and fun stuff like that -> would your girlfriend accept loli or guro hentai content easier

And so forth. This is pretty much the trademark of VNDB.

< report >@94: GD's are only for specific VNs. If you open a random thread like the one you just described, I would probably not lock it on the spot, but would most certainly move it to your own board as it has absolutely nothing to do with VNDB. If such musings would organically develop in another thread then I would not mind it that much (unless it's a database related thread), but even such offtopics have their limitation after which the thread is usually re-railed.

We deal with VNs, that is why the offtopic is, well, offtopic here. :PLast modified on 1970-01-01 at 00:00

< report >@Gabe: I guess he meant the General discussions board in general, and not the GDs connected to specific VNs though.

< report >"-GD-" is an abbreviation that I established on VNDB a long time ago because I was too lazy to type out -General Discussion- every time I opened a new discussion thread under a VN (or because of a long VN-title that left no characters to write it out, one or the other... :P), so I -THINK- I might kinda-sorta-maybe-possibly-mostly have a firm grasp on what a -GD- is. As such there are two possibilities:

-He did mean -GD-, in which case it is stupid, as the -GD- designation only applies to VN discussions.
-He meant "on the general discussion boards", in which case it is stupid, because -GD- does not refer to the boards but a specific kind of thread.

Wrong is wrong no matter how you look at it. Also, whichever flavor of stupid you choose does not change the meat of my previous post, as random musings on humanity and such are not allowed. This is a database, not a blog.Last modified on 1970-01-01 at 00:00
