Missing tags for protagonist and heroines

< report >Over the past weeks I have stumbled upon a few missing tags for protagonists and heroines.
In most cases the tags are present as a tag for a heroine but not for a (female) protagonist or vice versa (less frequent). I do not remember them quite now.

But take as an example the the hunter tags: g209 and g210

You could tag a heroine's role, but there is no tag if the protagonist (female or male) is the hunter as in v9129 or v9275.

BTW, maybe I still have not discovered it (because it is soley under some romaji name, perhaps) but what is with the role/vocation of an excorcist (for protagonist, heroine and hero)? The two hunter tags are not fitting and I believe the Onmyouji tag would be misleading too.

Then there is the thing with the 'exploding breast' protagonist.
As it is a major feature in most nukiges the VNDB has the Kyonyuu heroine tag, but what to do with all those nukiges that have a female protagonist with this trait? Tagging it with g533 would be misleading.

To shorten the matter, instead of creating a helluva of different threads regarding missing tags for protagonists and heroines, I think we should use this thread and collect all our input, so that if a real need arises to create a missing tag, echomateria could look up here (if he is interessted and is agreeable with my idea).

< report >The long-term goal is to get rid of (most) of the heroine/protag tags, since such things are far better handled with the new character system. To be realistic, though, it'll take 10 more years before we have enough character entries to cover for the current tags. :(

That said, it may be a good idea to at least start focussing more on the character DB than on bloating the tags with even more obscure things.Last modified on 2012-01-31 at 20:38

< report >A point for you.
I have thought already that the development goes this way, but I think you are propably right with your guess of 10 years.
And I say the work to create characters for roughly 80% of the nukiges is just not worth the effort.
So I think it would be wise to not bloat this neat DB (for characters) with all those nukige characters. Especially as for a lot of them there are no sprites/pictures out there that fit d12#4 (either NSFW or nonexistent).

A bit off topic: I do not know if it is already stated elsewhere, but I am missing an age tag.Last modified on 2012-01-31 at 21:09

< report >Well, it won't hurt to add some tags for now. Some games are a bit mistagged, with female protagonists recieving heroine's tags for example. Kyonyuu protagonist sounds like a useful tag to me, with all those anti-demon ninjas and whatnot. :P

Age tag? Like character's age? I don't think there's one.

EDIT: I added the Kyonyuu Protagonist tag, the rest is up to Echo. :PLast modified on 2012-01-31 at 21:40

< report >So, now I cannot hide it anymore! I am the purple tentacle from outer space.

I've remembered and added one of the protagonist tags (g1352) I am missing - I hope echo gives his approval.

If not ... beware the wrath as the Day of the Tentacle reaches out with SCUMM.

< report >I'd recommend thinking traits instead of tags. Since the vague way character tags work isn't helpful for specific situations. They are helpful for someone who wants to have a quick impression about a game without delving into too much detail and browsing character pages. We will keep some of the character tags that helps this purpose when we remove the most of the others. Assuming by then we'll have a trait version of them each. So if you want to be helpful, you can track down character related tags that does not have a mirroring trait and add them. And if you want to help further, you can make character entries. We need lots and lots of them. :)

Disagreed. The character DB was designed to handle all these things. The tags, on the other hand, were in no way designed to handle all specific cases and combinations (as Echo also said). I used the term "bloat" earlier, but that's not very accurate. More accurate is saying that it's just an unsightly way of misusing the tagging system for something it is not designed to handle.

And let's continue t1292.63 here.
The browse character feature is neat but at the moment pretty useless - sorry.
Yes, I realize that currently the character DB won't be able to replace the tags completely. But my intention for the future is that they will. I.e., by extending the VN browser with filters for which you can specify character properties/traits, etc. I have no intention of completely abandoning the character-related tags until the char DB will be able to properly replace it, but nor do I intent on keeping to expand the tags with functionality that the char DB is supposed to handle.Last modified on 2012-02-02 at 10:33

< report >Thanks for your explantion.
That is roughly what I already thought you have in mind.
Could you give a guess when this function is coming? Or is it still a far end goal?

But the question remains, what is with all those nukige characters, mostly faceless or kyonyuu with nothing to differentiate as the plain way in which they have intercourse? I do not see the use do spend hours over hours to add them to the database especially that most doujin circles do not have character pics on their OHP as the companies have.

On the long term.

An image is not a requirement for adding a character. It just makes the char pages look more fancy, but that's all. If there's not much more information about a character than the way in which they have intercourse, then adding chars really shouldn't take hours. :P
