My issue with CLANNAD [SPOILERS maybe]

I love this VN! Really! A great read, likeable characters (well most of them anyway, wished the protag could have been a bit more serious at times), great voice acting and even greater BGM.
I have a thing for Nakige, romance and heartwarming love stories and this title hits the spot! It's sharing 1st place along with Hoshizora no Memoria as my favorite VN.
I have one mayor issue with CLANNAD though: it's way to complex! I mean there are 13 orbs of light to collect and I would have never reached the True End without a walkthrough.
For me the most difficult route to reach was Fuuko's. I mean how the hell was I suppose to figure out that you have to be nice to Narisa to reach it?
So I'm just wondering, how many of you guys finished this novel without a walkthrough?

To be honest I need a walkthrough for any VN I play unless its one of those where you just select the heroine you want to go for

of course I also used a walkthrough for clannad

It was my first nonlinear visual novel and it didn't even occur to me that I can use a walkthrough. So... yeah, I read without any sort of third-party help whatsoever. Damn, I was a total rookie back then and not only did I start from the very beginning every time... but also read the common route in every single case. I can't help but pity myself from that time. From perspective though, I can say that it was fun and taught me a tad about flags and whatnot.

Oh, and the only part I didn't manage to reach back then was that joke-ending with Sunohara. I read it several months later and laughed quite a bit at it.

In all honesty - Clannad is arguably the worst vn to read without a walkthrough (apart from Kagetsu Tohya... and perhaps F/sn - given that you you want to get every single bad ending).Last modified on 2012-06-23 at 19:50

I actually played KT without walktrough, and didn't have much trouble reaching the ending (didn't even need the hints the game itself provides). Though the flowchart is indeed intimidating, if you are systematic in the choices is not so hard to get an intuitive idea of the mapping.
If anything, I found harder ONE, with its non intuitive choices. And yes, Clannad must be near the top, with its choices that give you a bad end much later on.

@ mazyrian:
I don't know what KT is, if U mean CLANNAD than way the go mate! I couldn't finish it without some assistance. As for ONE, I tried it as well, but gave up due to, what U said, 'non intuitive choices'. Didn't like the story of ONE as much.

I had to break down and use a walkthrough myself, I tried to finish it without one but no...was not going to happen.

nonono, by far the worst VN to read without a walkthrough is Ever 17,
tsugumi's bad end is crushing and getting that several times in a row made me ragequit that game for a whileLast modified on 2012-06-23 at 21:14

@5 KT: Kagetsu Tohya. ONE is the only game where when aiming for some girl ended up entering other route.

I did decent without a walkthrough.

I'll say this though, there was one particular light orb that was kinda of stupid. I think it involved that old man in Tomoyo's route, and you had to have finished some other route before. I was lucky I had my usual right before the end and way before the end saves or I'd have to replay every single route up until the end instead of just loading each one.

You sure know how to talk me into reading it. I'll be done with finals in a few days, and I simply must check out whether it's as difficult as you say.

Aye, I remember now - it wasn't all that difficult to get though the main part of the story, but reaching those bad endings was nightmarish... especially Tsugumi's.

One of my issues I have with clannad, is the fact it lacks h-scenes in a type of game that would have been perfect to have maybe 1 or 2 at the end of a heroines route or something. Mind you I prefer tasteful h-scenes not ones thrown in just because like alot of vn's have.

Or is the plot that good? Only vn I have played with a plot so good I felt it didn't need any h-scenes in it was Ever 17 so far.

I didn't even noticed, that there's a light orbs needed to collect. Without walkthrough I wouldn't even know, that there's a true end to achieve, lol. Beside I've completed Ever17 without walkthrough (with just knowing, that there's a true end), since there's pretty obvious choices.
