< report >So, with all the patch drama going around in the other thread at the moment, I decided to actually take a look at this VN after all. As for why I started a new thread for this? Well, I find it kind of silly that there are three huge threads about this game with 100-600~ posts, yet there is not a single thread that talks about the actual -VN- in depth instead of the whole Moenovel/censorship/retranslation triumvirate.

But on topic: I only started the game, so I have only two observations this far.

One: I positively ADORE the art direction of this game. I don't really know why, but the entire thing just resonates with me. I would go as far as give it an official "Gabe's stamp of approval", if I had one. Hmmm... Note to self: make an approval stamp for future use.

Two: The writing seems pretty "blocky", for lack of better words. For example, right at the start, we have this bit:
"I chased after the paper airplane and ran up the slope."
"Then just as I finally caught it..."
"There was someone on top of the hill."
"It was a girl sitting in a wheelchair."
I would say this is probably not a translation issue, since my problem is not with the grammar or the wording but with the fact that the narration often keeps throwing these short sentences at the reader in quick succession and then switch over to very long sentences at a whim, which just wrecks the flow of the narration. Speaking of which, am I the only one who finds the narration very dry and soulless as well?
...
Maybe it's just me.

Whatever. This VN is not exactly high on my priority list right now, but it looks and feels cozy enough, so I suppose I will slowly wade through it in small doses in the next week or so. By then I will probably have more observations to share, till then feel free to discuss -the visual novel- by yourself. (hint: Daddy doesn't want to see you kids litter this thread with Moenovel complains as well, or he will have to make you stand in the corner. Are we clear?)

< report >Yeah, art is best aspect of this novel, with heroine routes story being worst.

< report >I think the heroine routes are pretty good(with the exception of the Kazato sisters')
The common route is also deep and well-written
And yes, this game's art is awesome
The only two things I don't really like about this game are its very similar endings(can't be helped, though) and Asa&YoruLast modified on 2013-10-31 at 15:19

< report >I just reached the OP, and there were a few more things that struck me:

-The twins had practically zero screen-time this far, which is pretty weird.

-The beginning of this VN is -extremely- slow, and while it picks up the pace after a while, it's not exactly gripping even then. The heroines are cute and all, but the comedy is extremely tame and the "drama scenes" I have seen this far in the story were pretty hectic and they had no payoff whatsoever. It's just relaxing fluffy stuff, which is not bad, but it gets a little monotonous after a while.

-I really don't like the system of the game. The text is white and blue on a white and blue background and its size is generally too small in relation to the entire window, forcing me to keep glancing up an down between the box and the tachies on the screen. It just tires out my eyes something awful.

The narration kinda works like that here. It generally sticks to the shorter lines (especially during dialogues), but than it suddenly throws a long-ass explanation or something. It didn't bother me that much though. As for how it feels, I'll refrain from writing anything about the "ENG" version, but the JP one didn't feel particularly dry or soulless. :P

I'm somewhere in the middle of the common route, and I agree, the art is awesome. I liked the jokes too, especially exchanges between Aoi and Kotori. Btw., she is definitely my favorite heroine so far, she had quite a few very cute moments (and I generally have a thing for disabled girls...). I also kinda liked all that aviation/aerodynamics infodumping, I learned some (useless) trivia thanks to that (figuring everything out was a huge pain though, that part I kinda hated, since I don't know any relevant JP vocab).

And yes, the twins had practically zero screen-time this far... only one scene each. This is very weird. But I already like Yoru anyway. :PLast modified on 2013-10-31 at 20:20

< report >I would still say the comedy is not bad, but it is definitely not the "laugh out loud" kind of funny. I often found myself smirking, but it never really went beyond that. Also, I like Kotori the most as well, and I don't even have a thing for disabled girls... albeit I am admittedly "weak against the weak", so that might also count. :P

As for the aviation infodumps, they are my death. I just happen to know a lot about aviation (and I don't even have any special interest in it, it just stuck with me along the years), so for me those parts were incredibly boring. Nothing some tactical CTRL usage couldn't solve. :P

< report >A few moments, like Kotori calling herself "Cool Byuchi" and Aoi's following jabs, did made me laugh out loud (Engrish-related jokes are always funny). :P

And yeah, if I was more familiar with aviation terminology, I'd probably get bored too. On the other hand, it would make figuring everything out soooo much easier. I wouldn't have to spend an hour on merely ~10 lines, looking up how skip and skid work... >_<

< report >^ Holy hell, you weren't kidding. The common route -is- extremely long (and pretty sloggish to boot)! -.-

Just for the record: I am at the point when they have done their first flight-tests (and there was a cameo by the twins as well when they flew over the lake). My question is; about how much of the common route is still ahead of me?

< report >@10
Plot-wise common route covers about 1.5 years since protag came back to town, so you did about half of it.

< report >I finally got back to reading this, since I want to get it out of my system before possibly moving on to the two recently translated moeges.

I am still not at the end of the common route (holyfuckitisloooooooooong -.-'), but I'm over the one year timeskip, and I have to say the VN becomes lightyears more interesting afterwards. The twins are a really good addition to the cast, there is actually interesting stuff happening and the pacing of the events finally overtook a snail, so I don't feel like yawning anymore. Overall I am a bit surprised, as the pre-timeskip part of the story was quite underwhelming, but if the rest of the VN will keep up the pace I think I might have to change my opinion on this game...

< report >*sigh* I finished Kotori's route and I decided to drop the game. This VN just doesn't engage me the slightest. In fact, reading it actually made me feel more jaded and tired instead of relaxed and it also committed what I consider the greatest possible sin when it comes to a literary work: it made me feel like I was wasting my time and didn't get anything out of it. Sure, there were nice parts and Kotori had more than a few adorable scenes in her route, but at the same time it had so much pointless padding and infodumping and jargon and so so many damn scenes revolwing around the glider and the Soaring Club without any variety... -.-'

I won't rate the VN (I never vote on dropped titles), but if I did it would still be a semi-objective 7. Its technical aspects are pretty neat, the art is awesome, the characters are okay, the plot is weak and in the end it's just boooooooooooooooooooooooring.

< report >Worst thing about individual routes is that they are very similar to each other. So yeah, if you are bored by Kotori's route, which is one of best this game has, there's no reason to even try anything else.

< report >I suppose this VN is just not for me... oh well, there is plenty of fish in the ocean and I am sure there are many others who like it (at least the ratings say so).

Also, if you are still working on the patch: In the scene when Kotori is riding on the bike with the protag, at one point she hugs him and says "I am sweaty" and he replies "I'm sorry.". I'm pretty sure that it was supposed to be "You are sweaty.", and I can say that without any extensive Japanese knowledge simply because it makes no sense otherwise...

Oh, wow, you have found a translation mistake in KonoSora, what a huge surprise. XD

Jokes aside, this scene was already mentioned on Fuwanovel, in the restoration patch thread. And I have found like 3-4 TL screw-ups in 15-line long fragment around this part, plus some more stuff that required editing. You have really earned my respect for surviving a whole one playthrough with this MoeNovel trainwreck. :P

As for me, I'm still stuck in the middle of the common route. Just recently, I have reached those first test-flights you mentioned earlier (yes, I'm that slow). But, for a moege, it's kinda okay~ish so far. Sure, it's boring, but that's what I was expecting. Slice-of-life thingy isn't really my cup of tea, and it always bores me to some extent. However, I still like reading something like this once in a (long) while.
Though if there really is a lot of aviation/aerodynamics infodumping later on in character routes, I'll probably end up hating this VN with passion. Deciphering all of that will be a mega-chore. >_<

< report >^ Don't worry, I'm stubborn as a mule. It will be done... eventually. :P
Besides, it's really worth the effort - that's a great exercise for my Japanese. Also, some TL-experience will come in handy if/when I will try translating something myself.Last modified on 2013-12-03 at 15:45

< report >@Pabloc: Honestly, I didn't really care about the TL quality most of the time. If I ran into a weird sentence or a possible mistranslation I just reverse-engineered it to make sense and moved on. Taken how incredibly low this VN is on plot, I doubt I missed much.

< report >@Gabe
Heh, thinking that VNs that are low on plot are somehow more resistant to shit translations is a very common misconception. I think it's actually the other way round. :P
Yes, you don't miss any plot relevant details (since there isn't much to miss there). But, it's a moege/charage - you don't read it for the plot to begin with. Sure, storyline matters, but titles like this are all about characters' personalities, their interactions and general, lighthearted fun.

And those elements are much more vulnerable to poor translations than you'd think. You really have to try hard to make the plot incomprehensible (I'd say you'd probably have to use The Machine™, unless the story is quite complex of course, but that's pretty damn rare in charages and such). Screwing up more subtle stuff like characterization and interactions is much easier. It usually relies on very "Japanese" stuff (honorifics, keigo and such), and failing to translate/localize those properly can already mess up quite a bit.

I'm very curious if you'd actually see any significant difference while reading the fully fixed version. I'll make sure to bug you about some feedback as soon as it will be finished. >:DLast modified on 2013-12-03 at 19:43

< report >^You might as well. I am not entirely resistant to the idea of re-reading the VN at a later point with a proper translation. I still have all the other routes to read after all, and I am curious as well about how much the experience would change. :P

Also... yeah, the honorific usage was kinda hilarious in the MN translation. Senior Hat, anyone? I always read it as "señor Hat" and got confused for a moment about whether the duck was Spanish or not.
I mean, based on the top hat I would say he would be British at best...

Señor Amane was a much worse though, but I think that the first restoration patch have already fixed that. :PLast modified on 2013-12-03 at 20:27

< report >I am just glad this is not a depressing vn, I been playing way to many of those lately. It'll be nice to play a vn where the routes are pretty fluffy and sweet for a change XD.

Since there is a fixed translation coming I may just stop where I am at now, I am not even on a girls route yet I don't think. Where I am atm is At the part where your trying to find a teacher to be an advisor so they can restart the soaring club up after Asa and Yoru move into the dorm. Kinda looking forward to what I am guessing will be a threesome h-scene with the Twin sisters and Aoi based on the tags under sexual for the twins. I find the twins adorable. < report >This was an interesting VN, it really got my hopes up with the high quality artwork and high resolution, but in the end the story dragged on for way too long.

Artwork (9/10): What originally got me interested, it's a much higher resolution and higher quality than other VNs. Everything was well done even if a lot of settings we reused. Characters are all well drawn, I have nothing to complain about.

Characters (8/10): Characters are well developed, and while there are some stereotypical characters (Ageha=energetic, Kotori=tsundere, etc.), they also managed to get some very unique characters in. Amane provided many laughs throughout the VN and she's a very unique character. Not to mention the duck Hat, probably my favorite. He never failed to bring a smile to my face. I felt like some of the other non-main girls could have used some more screen time, and I was disappointed when I found out my favorite heroine, Kanako, only had a route in the fan disc, and Akari has no route.

Story (5/10): While it starts off interesting, it gets boring VERY fast. I don't need to learn about gliders every five minutes, and I don't need to see test flights that are exactly the same over and over again. I thought the game was over 1/2 way through, just to find out I wasn't even close. That aside once you get into the routes things get a little better. H-scenes were decent, but everyone becomes a sex crazy beast. Translation was bad. Good enough to understand, but obvious mistakes every few sentences, and every once in a while it seems like the translator changed and I could barely understand what was going on. (especially during Ageha's route)
Ageha (6/10): Starts off pretty fun, but I started getting more and more annoyed as it developed. She refuses to tell her feelings for you, just because of some stupid shit about protesting a demolition? I was expecting some epic story about what changed her, not something boring. And to finish it off, she refuses to tell you her feelings even in the end.
Kotori (7/10): Was decent, didn't like Kotori as a character too much, but at least it wasn't a lame story like Ageha. Typical ending.
Amane (9/10): Amane being the most interesting character also made her route the most enjoyable, her remarks always make me laugh or cringe. My favorite by far.

Sound (8/10): Voices were good, music seemed a bit repetitive.

Overall (7/10): Was a fun game, but waaaay too much wasted time. If they cut down on the useless bullshit, the game would have been half as long while being much better.

< report >I finally got around to picking this novel up. I'm still in the common route I think and I'd say I'm having a pretty good time of it aside from some weirdness in the translation.

Speaking of which, I found something odd with the dialogue. In the second act, the day before the exams you have a big study session with everyone and at the end you take Hotaru and Ageha home. The dialogue says:

Ageha: Hotaru, never forget you can control a man with your eyes.

Hotaru: I get it. Aoi likes girls with big eyes.

Now, I am NOT fluent in Japanese, but during both sentences I heard the word "oppai" which, despite my lack of fluency, I'm pretty sure means breasts. If I replaced the "eyes" with "breasts" it would make a bit more sense. Now, should I take that as a mistake on the translation's part or put on my conspiracy hat and say it's some form of censorship?Last modified on 2014-02-08 at 16:36
