No, it's not really a good thing. Even with a strong art style, everyone having the same face is a bad thing. This is generally something that happens with most VNs but it's especially prominent in August's stuff. At least they gave a couple daito characters different eye shapes for variety's sake.

Hotoka looks a little bit different. Not much though.

I read somewhere that the wide variety of hair colours in anime make it less neccesary to give every character a noticably different face.

True story. Face always same, hairstyle and color different. Your imagination does the rest.Last modified on 2014-12-01 at 09:16

I read somewhere that the wide variety of hair colours in anime make it less neccesary to give every character a noticably different face.
That kind of makes sense from a production point of view, particularly now that anime drawing is computer assisted. If it is the same face being copy pasted, production time goes down significantly. Changing hair color is near instant as well.

I'm not sure I like this approach, but if it cuts production costs enough not to cancel production of something I want to read/watch, then I love it.

However it can get overboard with similar characters. Read a manga once where I never managed to tell two sisters apart >_<
