< report >I just reset the password of everyone who hasn't used the login form and hasn't changed his password for a year. You'll have to use the password reset form to get access to your account if you're affected.
Oh btw, these are the passwords that were still stored in the old and insecure format.
Oh btw, did you know that VNDB has an had an IRC channel for like, its entire lifetime? It's #vndb on irc.synirc.net. It's been pretty dead for the past few years, but you're still all welcome.
Oh btw, that channel is for discussing VNDB matters and stuff. Not for generic visual novel stuff.
Oh btw, if you ask any hard administrative questions I'll probably still forward you to the boards because I tend to delegate the hard stuff to the mods and other contributors, who tend not to be on IRC nowadays. :(
Oh btw, maybe that's why our IRC channel is so dead.
Oh and btw, VNDB has switched to HTML5 now. Not like it matters.

I'm sure plenty of people have seen it, but I'm not sure if they have understood what they have seen. Maybe it would be better to call it "IRC #vndb" instead of just "#vndb". Alternatively the channel is dead because the need is minimal. The boards works quite nicely, informs more people and stays online for longer (yes I do remember the irc log). I only view irc as a tool to coordinate source development and the irc activity level is a result of the source activity level. It might suddenly spring to life again, depending on who gets the time/motivation to implement some new great idea.

< report >I hate chats in general. It heavily limits the possible discussions by a) implementing a strict character limit and b) having everyone talk over everyone at the same time. So I have to type as fast as possible and compress my messages as much as possible, otherwise the discussion moves on before I get to post anything. My typing is also quite terrible without spellcheck, especially when I'm rushed, which also annoys me. So chat for me is an archaic and VERY frustrating way of communication. I prefer forums, or if I want to have long discussion with someone in particular, than voice call or video call. Or pretty much anything aside of chat and SMS.
Not to mention that the last time I was there things blew up in a particularly nasty fashion and I possibly chased away a mod who had been around for ages (or might not, but I haven't seen him posting since then). So... yeah, I'd rather stay away for that as well. I'm usually calm and collected, but if something pisses me of, I end up raging quite hard. That almost never comes through on the forum, since by the time I type out everything I usually calm down enough to know better than to be a raging asshat and reword my message in a more civilised form. In chat... well, not so much.Last modified on 2015-11-01 at 19:18

Somehow I don't think you did that. Sure it might have been a bad incident, but if you aren't a regular, then most people would just return after you left. If he really did leave after that, he would likely have left anyway because of something you didn't know about.
You are right about the speed of chats, which is why I generally avoid them too. #vndb seems idle enough to stick to a single topic at a time and doesn't move on quick enough to make your input obsolete while you type. This mean unlike most chats, #vndb actually works and serves its purpose.

It is important info for some people. Presumably people wonder why they are suddenly logged out, which makes this message essential. Irc and html5 could also be interesting info for some people. It's like listening on traffic reports on the radio. Often when they mention a closed road, you don't have to use it and don't have to care, but people who plan on using it cares. Since it's the same message sent to everybody, you just have to filter yourself depending on if you should care or not.

< report >I don't know how but it didn't ask me to change my password or anything. In fact, my browser auto-logs me every time using the stored password.
I thought it was because my account might have been created less than a year ago but after checking, it was created back in 2013, so I don't know.
Anyway, thanks for the hard work !

< report >I absolutely love chats. Not the super busy chats like some popular IRC channels are, but the more controlled and focussed chats. You can make a chat to work that way, and that's exactly how I moderated #vndb. (And that is the reason why #fluffy was created back in the day, #vndb got a little too chatty at some point).
Forums are too slow and organized. Quite often I just don't post even if I have something to say, because I have to put more effort into organizing my thoughts. On the other hand, voice calls require me to process information faster than I'd prefer. Chats hit the sweet spot for me between forums and voice calls.

IRC does have a character limit per message, but in practice, it doesn't matter. Any decent IRC client will let you type as much as you want before hitting enter, and when you do, it'll break it up into multiple messages for you if necessary. Also, any decent IRC client will let you include soft line breaks or copy/paste multiple lines in the message box that get automatically translated as separate messages when you hit enter.
