< report >While I have not played this myself, from looking up strategy guides, screenshots, and videos, Megami Paradise appears to be a JRPG, not a VN.

< report >Hey guys, I'm having trouble determining whether or not Mission of Murder is a hybrid or a normal dungeon crawl RPG. The only gameplay footage I can find is 5 minutes long.

< report >There's a trial edition (17 MB) on link

It tried it and it seemed to be mostly VN scenes.

< report >Alright, I haven't tried it myself nor have any intention to do so, but would Sisters Royale, shmup-ey as it may be, qualify as a hybrid of some sort?

Additionally, as much work as it is, would anyone help me with listing all the VNs (normal or hybrid) in the MS Store? I have to make an important decision regarding gaming (I refuse to game from a platform store-set whose only VNs are either Otomes or neutral gendered) and might even have to drop Microsoft altogether.

< report >Blaze of Destiny III -The Tears of the Blue Sea- is described on the DLsite page as an action-RPG rather than a VN. There's a gameplay video here: link - is that enough dialog to count as a hybrid?

< report >Would Ambition: A Minuet in Power qualify for inclusion?

On one hand it seems similar to Long Live the Queen in a lot of ways, which would indicate that, no, it doesn't belong, but on the other hand it doesn't have LLtQ's strong emphasis on explicitly raising stats. Instead it mostly relies on dialog choices made during conversations with other characters, which can then affect a much, much smaller number of stats, and it seems to involve a lot more reading of narrative and dialog.

There's a partial demo playthrough here and the Steam demo itself can be installed via the SteamDB page.

< report >I have a slightly more generic question. Please could someone tell me whether visual novels are only eligible here if the full game is/has existed somewhere, or are demos eligible as well?

< report >Ether Code - This is an RPGMaker game, advertised by the devs as an RPG, not a VN. There do seem to be some VN-style scenes at some point, judging by the screenshots, but they're also definitely not the focus...

Doesn't seem to. There are only very short dialogues between the shmup scenes. link

Blaze of Destiny III -The Tears of the Blue Sea- is described on the DLsite page as an action-RPG rather than a VN. There's a gameplay video here: link - is that enough dialog to count as a hybrid?
It looks suspiciously RPG-like. Seems to only have dialogues between characters, free moving, and lengthy battles. Of course, it's hard to judge from 30 min clip alone, and a cursory check on YT didn't reveal any playthroughs. If someone has played it, welcome to chime in.

Secret Little Haven seems like a text adventure.

it looks like an operating system simulation which we have a tag for... "text adventure" usually means zork, which that isn't.
From link it doesn't look like an operating system simulator is the main premise here. Seems to me that the chat program is the one most used to advance the game, and you converse there with various people. I'd say it's closer to "Epistolary Fiction", which we also have a tag for.

Would Ambition: A Minuet in Power qualify for inclusion?
From my glance at the demo playthrough, it seems to qualify. While there are some minor gameplay elements, there is also plenty of narration, and the main interaction comes through choices.

P.S. Npzmzfg is scarily fast... Is he stalking me?... o_OLast modified on 2021-04-07 at 17:47

< report >Thank you very much for the clarification, butterflygrrl! (I ask because there are some visual novels in the Spring Thing festival. Part of the festival involves publically releasing the submitted IF. I'll go through and see which entries are in fact visual novels, and which are types of IF that don't belong here).Last modified on 2021-04-10 at 09:33

#715 by iwannarategames

< report >Persona 4 and Golden are not on here due to not being VNs. The spin offs are because you read more than play during the main story mode.

< report >Is Flower, Sun, and Rain a VN? It looks like a 3D adventure game akin to Life Is Strange.

EDIT: It is, but damn! That narration is sure handled in a weird way!Last modified on 2021-04-19 at 19:53

< report >I've started to play Murder by Numbers for hours today and it's very apparent it's not a VN.

The incredibly short story segments are constantly being interrupted by these puzzle sequences the game keeps making up the flimsiest excuses for you to do them, which makes it apparent that the story exists to fuel said gameplay sequences.

And when that's not interrupting the reading bits, the Phoenix Wright style investigation segments are!

Please delete this. This is so not a VN it hurts to think about!Last modified on 2021-04-21 at 00:19

< report >Based on the first bunch of let's play episodes, I'm inclined to agree. The gameplay/reading ratio is pretty bad and only at the start did I see a few lines that could qualify as narration. Not sure if the players are slow at the puzzels, but they're certainly slow at reading.

< report >Honestly, it has as much narration as the actual Phoenix Wright games. A monologue at the end and on rare occassions, an single inner thought from the protagonist. Though in this case it's slightly better as the game will show 3rd person descriptions randomly sometimes, though it's as sporadic as the protagonist's thoughts.Last modified on 2021-04-21 at 15:08

< report >I am not sure if these two are VNs (and can be included here), so I am linking stuff I found on Panapanapana (website which contains information regarding VN releases). Haishin/Livestream: Escape from Hotel Izanami from qureate whose other VNs we have here. Another one is Emiya-san chi no Kyou no Gohan/Today's MENU for EMIYA Family, which should be a spinoff of FSN and adaptation of the manga/anime(?).

I don't want to add these two to the DB, only to get it deleted soon.Last modified on 2021-04-23 at 18:31

Also no need to be so obtuse. There's a reason I asked here first before adding it.

I just started to play Murder by Numbers, played the first case through and to me it's pretty much a visual novel. I don't understand how could you think otherwise.

< report >Uh, did we even play the same game?

The short, mostly lacking in narration adv sequences are constantly being interrupted the story coming up with excuses for you to do stupid nonograms. The game has plenty of sequences where it forces you to interact the the game world in a Ace Attorney-esque way in order to get more dialogues to advance the story.

Basically, it has the same problem as 13 Sentinels, just with the aforementioned nonograms and the replacement of a 2D sidescroller POV with a first person adventure game view akin to the aforementioned Ace Attorney.

That's what I'm wondering.

The "stupid nonograms" aren't that long that I'd consider them as big interruptions to the story. They're quite simple and fast, and then it goes back to the story dialogues. When I think about the game afterwards, the dialogues are quite prevalent. This is very clearly a vn hybrid.
