External links revamp

< report >I'm working on revamping the "external links" section of database entries, so that it's more flexible in adding multiple links to the same site (e.g. multiple Wikipedia links for one VN entry) and to make it easier to allow new sites.

However, to keep things organized, the sites that can be linked to will still be limited for each DB entry. So you can keep adding Wikipedia/AniDB/Twitter/etc links to entries, but still won't be able to add links any random site. The exception is of course the official homepage.

While I can easily add or remove sites later on, I'd like some feedback on sites to allow for each DB entry. Here's a quick and very incomplete list:

VNs:
- Wikipedia (not restricted to English wikipedia anymore, any language can be added)
- Renai.us
- (new) Visualnoveler.net?
- (Encubed will likely be removed. It's not updated anymore and I noticed that all links are currenty broken)

Releases (lends itself perfectly for webshops):
- Mangagamer
- JList / JBox
- DLSite
- Play-asia?
- Getchu? (Do they even appreciate links from western sources?)

Producers:
- Wikipedia

Staff:
- Wikipedia
- Twitter
- AniDB
- I remember there were more suggestions when we implemented the staff DB, but I forgot which.

Characters:
- AniDB
- (new) AnimeCharactersDatabase.com

While I'm at it I'm also thinking of adding links to VNStat to all relevant entries, but as it has a one-to-one mapping with our database entries, its links won't actually have to be stored as part of the DB entries.

I also intent to remove the current sponsored links in favor of these new extenal links. I might still keep the "available at" links on the VN page, but they'll be sourced from the above links. In practice that means not much will change.

Any feedback and suggestions for new sites is welcome.

< report >I think it's a good idea in general. I'm totally in favor of the current system for linking to informational entries on other websites like Wikipedia or AniDB, as well as things like official twitter accounts for staff entries. So I'm all in for an update of the allowed websites.

Can you perhaps elaborate a bit about how it will work for releases however? Since they generally have links to the official developer website. Will they remain the same and will you simply be adding a new field for other external links?

I also think that if you're going to include external webshop links other than the "available at" links, you might end up with a pretty extensive list. Other than the sites you've already mentioned, there are shops like DMM, Amazon, Steam, Denpasoft, and even Nutaku comes to mind with their downloadable games.

Yes.

I'm actually quite fine with this. What I'm mostly worried about is that it may result in many more DB edits, making it harder to keep track of each entry's history and verify all edits. But all in all I don't think this will be very significant. We already have this issue with character traits, and I have plans to better handle it with an additional column and filters to the edit histories so you can quickly see which fields have been changed. The main thing keeping me from implementing this is that it's quite a pain to present a nice user interface for those filters, and I'm already not a fan of front-end development in general.

< report >Allow erogamescape and erogetrailers.

Staff:
Pixiv
Patreon-like?

Producers
Youtube (only when the channel is something official > thinking about linking OP/ED for VN themselves like what erogetrailers do)

(Releases:
Companies's webstore > like Waffle, Cyc, Dieselmine, etc
Melonbooks
Toranoana
Gyutto
DMM > but with their restricted zones, this website is pure crap
I thought you were at least getting some pennies with those links.)

I still don't get why renai.us is relevant. It adds nothing.

< report >Seeing how erogamescape blocks most foreign countries.. you can skip that one. I mean it would be useful if people could use it without a proxy, but.. most can't.

< report >When you know you can't go to EGS... you stop... clicking EGS links? I am blocked but still find that useful to link one of the most important VN DB for when I bring out my proxy.

If you're fine with that Yorhel, then I sure don't have any issues with it. Although I feel your pain considering front-end development.

Good list of sites, didn't even think of most of those.

As for EGS, I don't see a problem with linking to it even if it may block foreign IPs. It's still a significant database for when you're looking for more sources on staff credit or other entry information.

< report >Regarding staff, they are often chatting at link
This is a Japanese blog, which competes with Twitter, and it's fucking popular :D

Characters:
- AniDB
- (new) AnimeCharactersDatabase.com

Why do we need this? I believe we should think about how to make the character profile more compact, not vise versa. All that lies behind these links can be transferred to vndb characters via traits and images. Moreover, I often encounter the wrong character names on AnimeCharactersDatabase. This site cannot be trusted.

< report >Oh that's a nice list of sites.

As for EGS (and similar JP sites): I'm undecided what to do with sites that are uninterested in foreign visitors. If they clearly don't want our visitors, then I'm inclined to honor that opinion*. Yet on the other hand, EGS links would be incredibly useful.

As for links to other DBs such as AniDB and AnimeCharactersDatabase, I strongly believe that databases with similar content should be inter-linked. Even if we cover more or more accurate information in general**, that doesn't mean we do it all cases. Cross-checking databases is always useful and makes potential future collaboration easier (not that I have such plans at the moment, but I'm certainly not hostile to the idea).

*) With the general exception of the official homepage of a producer/release, which is silly not to include. With the exception on the exception that I may still remove links on request, but that's very rare.
**) Which is not even true for both of the DBs mentioned, because those at least list the Anime that a character eppears in. We don't.Last modified on 2016-07-09 at 09:36

< report >yorhel, ok, but please, exclude these links from the VN page. Make them visible only at character's profile.

< report >If we're adding links to other Wikipedia language editions in addition to the English one, would is possible to retrieve those URLs from Wikidata? That is, link rather than link

I don't know how/if it would work, but if it would, then we wouldn't have to keep track of when WP articles are moved or when a new one is created in a new language.
