< report >So, i was looking for news about a VN on Fuwanovel and I found a comment about a finished release of Katawa Shoujo. It's been so much time I played this (in fact it was my first VN ever) that i don't really remember it.

My question is: since I didn't know about this project, what does it really do? I read about adding content from the alpha/beta build, but why was it removed in the first place? Do anyone have info about it?

I put the link here (steam discussion). You should be able to download the game from there.

I will also add a poll, because, why not?Last modified on 2017-03-31 at 09:46

< report >Yeah, I am one of those rare VN readers who never read Katawa and I didn't even know there was some kind of "Prealpha Repair Restoration" type of project going on for it. I never even heard something was removed from Katawa in the first place?

< report >As far as I can tell, it's just that some parts of the story and characters changed over the course of development, which is normal, but some fans liked aspects of the unreleased earlier versions and wanted to merge those scripts with the completed art from the final release.

< report >Actually, Hanako and Shizune's routes after Act 2 are very different from the final VN. Hanako's route has three bad endings and her good ending is only accessible after getting one of the bad endings, unlocking a choice in Lilly's route that makes you go to Hanako's instead and that's considered her true route. Shizune's route has more choices and the Misha being lesbian for Shizune subplot takes a much darker turn later on.

I liked Shizune's alpha route more than the final one, but Hanako's fake route in the alpha is fucking awful. The true Hanako route is pretty decent, though. If you liked KS, I'm sure you'll find the alpha to be an interesting read.

< report >Which one would you recommend for reading KS for the very first time?

and now I'm getting 'Nam, er, Kira Kira flashbacks.. having to watch a bad ending (I know no details of)/"normal" one where the heroine has to die because stupidity is awful design while the good ending, or so the crossover states, was not really good either.

Personally, while I found KS quite decent, especially considering the usual western low for OELVNs that are worse than Japanese Doujin Games, I consider it on par in all terms with professional Japanese originals (to the point where one can indeed mistake it for such), yet while reading Hanako's route I paused and never really cared to continue. This repair sounds like some want to bring back the worse writing&design which were discarded for a reason.

Going in blind first is the option I like with most VNs, but Emi would be the most appropriate route for someone who's playing for the first time.

Yeah, it doesn't help much that Hanako's alpha bad endings are just grimdark for the sake of being grimdark and shocking the player/reader, one of them is even unintentionally funny at that.

I don't blame you for that, Hanako's route is my second least favorite after Shizune. It started out quite well up until Act 2, but then it became painful to sit through because of how stupid both Hisao and Hanako's decisions were. I'd argue that Hanako was better developed in Lilly's route than in her own route.

< report >No changes in Rin's route? Great, I'm glad I don't have to read that frustrating route ever again- KS was my first VN and I almost gave up on the entire genre as a result of this damn route. Might give Lilly, Hanako and Shizune's routes a quick skim.

So if I understand correctly, Hanako has in total 5 endings, 3 of which are bad (instead of one) and upon reaching one of them you unlock a good ending, and a true ending in Lily's route?

I actually liked Hanako's route back when I played it (played first). However, after playing Lily's route (played last) I can agree it's much better to Hanako's own route since she actually grows as a person, becomes more confident and less dependent on both Lily and Hisao. If the alpha version keeps that in and adds an option to pursue her in Lily's route I'm all for picking up the VN again. Been considering it for a while but this would make it more worthwhile.Last modified on 2017-07-04 at 20:58
