< report >How many times (and under what circumstances) is the "original title shouldn't be in Japanese for non-Japanese releases" warning wrongly given? Can't it just be a warning box that appears instead that forces editors to read it, click a checkbox saying "I understand" and then hit a button if they want it to proceed with a "original title in Japanese for non-Japanese release". Perhaps if there's no good circumstances when you'd need a title in Japanese for non-Japanese release then just make it refuse to accept the original title.

I reckon with that you could pretty much end the problem.

< report >Not sure if this was mentioned before. I think there is a point in making comments for tags more accessible. We have two ways to see tags with the main page for a game and separate menu. We can make it for one of them so the website sends you to a comment page instead of a tag page (EGS does something like this for example). This will motivate people to leave comments more often and everyone will be able to see more info about certain tags because different people can have very different opinions on them sometimes. Though, it'll help to be able to mark some comments as spoilers.

< report >Would it be possible to implement a feature for use of the blacklist, tag exception etc. set in the profile across the whole site? Tag searches for example give you the explicit mention that this feature doesn't work with them, why ist that?

The way it is now you still get a ton of entries which you shouldn't even see anymore - if it worked. It might be too much work, like most of the time something gets not done here, but it's such a half assed pain in the ass as is.Last modified on 2020-11-28 at 09:40

It was my original intention to make those comments available as tooltips or something on VN pages, and I may still do that. But the comments aren't always used sensibly and there's the problem of spoilers you mentioned.

Would it be possible to implement a feature for use of the blacklist, tag exception etc. set in the profile across the whole site?
That is exactly what "save as default" at the VN filters does. When saved, they also apply to tag pages, you just can't change your default from those tag pages directly because tag filters aren't available there. That might get fixed as part of t14995.

I set it as default, so it could just be buggy, so i wait until the advanced search gets completed.

Thanks for that btw. It made filtering through stuff in english last time i used it much more bareable. :)Last modified on 2020-11-28 at 10:04

< report >I'd love to have "number of reviews" column added to VN lists. Would that be possible? Sometimes I'm in a mood to browse reviews for VNs I completed, or the ones in my backlog, but opening each entry separately and checking if there are reviews for it is rather cumbersome.Last modified on 2020-12-01 at 05:55

< report >#857 "reviews" tab is for seeing MY reviews (the ones that I wrote). For my use case it's useless. What I need is a quick way to determine if given VN in my list or wishlist has any reviews, and, optionally, how many.Last modified on 2020-12-01 at 15:40

< report >Not super important but maybe it'd be interesting to make a small space on a VN page for a script size/total number of characters. TLWiki died but we can save that info (it's pretty useful to determine a length for example) in one place here and probably add more. There were guidelines too iirc so no need to come up with your own.

< report >my beautiful random VNs list, lost again! alas...

I wonder if there could be an option for a specialised random browsing page? I know the sidebar still has an option for just one random game, but it gets boring very quickly hammering that button one game at a time. A page that shows a handful of random screenshots, characters, game names, producers, etc, in different sections? I don't know.

< report >#863 that's actually a really good idea

a page that's like the 4 screenshot bar at the top except extreme edition with ~20-30 screenshots maybe with optional names underneath the screenshots and option for NSFW screenshots enabled

< report >for the VN discussions on the front page, it'd be nice if there could be a [R] or something in front of / different colour for review links to separate them from topics

< report >I've two concerning the releases tab.

1. Currently you can select only one platform/language, or all. It'd be neat if we could select multiple (OR), i.e. all spoken languages, and all owned platforms, It'd save having to cycle through multiple filter settings manually.

2. I'd like to have a persistent default setting for release language(s) and platform(s). Most of the time I'm looking for the best release to get (for me), languages I don't speak and platforms I don't have just get in the way. When I want to know what versions are out there in general, I can still click ALL.

< report >The releases tab hasn't been updated in a while and is missing some fields that have been added some time ago. Meanwhile the releases box on the main VN page has been expanded with more information (lots of icons, in particular), so I've been thinking to merge the filtering/summarization options of the releases tab into the VN page and get rid of the tab altogether.

But I've not really thought that through yet.

< report >Searching for parody games if the franchise doesn't have a tag is unnecessarily difficult. Even though several games all have a relation to the same anime, there's no way to get from one parody game to another because such games very often don't have created relations between one another and they don't have populated chars. A button like this would help with finding specific parodies immensely. Or simply allowing a write-in field for "has anime" in the search.
EDIT: implemented on advanced search. Thanks a lot.Last modified on 2021-01-03 at 02:04

< report >Changing topic here, but you know how we have "Trial", "Partial", and "Complete"?
Maybe we should have for "all ages" versions of eroge a separate category with three blocks shaded in yellow, titled "Complete (no H scenes)" or something, because if you say "complete" for an eroge, it could mean "complete with H scenes".
For VNs with no H content to begin with you can just use Complete.

< report >It doesn't make too much sense IMO - usually all-ages releases aren't made just by cutting H-scenes, but instead scenario gets rewritten, and often they get additional replacement scenes instead. Or even additional routes (see for example To Heart, Kono Aozora ni Yakusoku o or Mashiro Iro Symphony) So they are complete releases, just with slightly different scenario than adult version. And I think such releases should be treated as "complete". Age rating lower than +18 already explicitly tells, that there are no sex scenes. I think no one sane would for example deem "Memorial Editions" of Kanon or Air "partial".

The only case of straight-up cutting h-scenes I'm aware of (and perhaps such "yellow incomplete" tag would apply) are bunch of Campus' shorter VNs - Deep Love Diary -Koibito Nikki-, Fu'un to Kou'un to Koi Uranai no Tarot, Hatsukoi * Syndrome, Fuyu Uso -Snow World End-, Kimi to Hajimeru Dasanteki na Love Come, Sono Hana ga Saitara, Mata Boku wa Kimi ni Deau, Koioto Se Piace which have "Freeware All-ages edition" releases, that are described as such.Last modified on 2021-01-03 at 14:17

< report >Shower thought: How do you feel about adding a (language) difficulty rating? The question about "easy" VNs comes up so often, it'd be nice to have some actual data.

To no-one's surprise, I'm primarily interested in the difficulty of Japanese VNs for language-learners / non-native speakers, but I'm sure it could be generalised. (Even the assumption that the relative difficulty of texts generally doesn't change in translation is defensible, IMHO.)

< report >I personally don't think VNDB should worry about trying to guide language learners to play VNs that are suitable for them. link does primitively analyze this for Japanese VNs, but even that "primitive" attempt is already founded upon a lot of data that VNDB doesn't have, for a tiny subset of VNDB's VNs. If you want to help people, you're probably better off just making some kind of image-based chart with VN recommendations for newbie Japanese learners and posting it on 4chan or Reddit, or repeating the common sense about what types of VNs tend to be easier or harder to read.

Indeed, we shouldn't. The difficulty of the language is pretty subjective and depends on the person, their background, their native language, etc. just as much as it depends on the actual vocabulary of a VN. This is just too subjective for a database and would be useful for a diminutive pool of users. Such questions are better fielded elsewhere.
