White Album 2 ~Closing Chapter~The only visual novel that manages to impact my outlook on life to a certain extent. Phenomenal romance drama with master-class writing, realistically flawed characters, gorgeous visuals, and a beautiful soundtrack. Some of its most impactful moments left me completely speechless. Will likely remain my all-time favorite visual novel forever.Finished0/010
Utawarerumono: Futari no HakuoroThrilling conclusion to the trilogy. The war drama and politics have been highly improved from the second game. Masterfully crafted emotional and climactic moments. The finale moved me beyond anything else. In terms of gameplay, however, some of the final battles can be fairly difficult for non-SRPG fans.Finished0/09.5
Muv-Luv AlternativeOrchestra of death and suspense. Worth suffering through the two terrible prequels for. Full of nail-biting moments that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Awesome mecha-versus-alien battles. Emotional moments that almost made me shed tears. Only the snail-pace beginning and plot-convenient finale keep it from being perfect.Finished0/09.3
Root Double -Before Crime * After Days-Unpopular opinion: better than Ever17. All-time favorite mystery visual novel with a driving question so great that it's nearly impossible not to binge the game. Excellent cast, particularly the badass protagonist. Could have been a perfect game if the 'Before' arc had better pacing and the SSS system was implemented more properly.Finished0/09
Steins;GateScience, suspense, and sadness. One of the few visual novels where the expositions actually enrich the experience. Stellar characters and terrific alternate routes. Gritty artstyle suits the story better than that of the anime adaptation. Fairly slow on some parts, though.Finished0/09
Ever17 -The Out of Infinity-King of "escape room" visual novels... that is, until Root Double stole the throne. Nevertheless, it's one hell of an experience with suspenseful moments like no other. Artstyle might be a bit dated for some and the final arc can be irritatingly complex at some points.Finished0/08.7
Ikusa Megami ZeroEushully's magnum opus. Story starts off as your typical RPG plot, but slowly becomes something much darker, grander, and sadder. Celica is a terrific protagonist, but the real MVP is the sadistic Haishera. Her side chapter is one of the best "villain perspective" stories I have ever experienced in any medium.Finished0/08.7
AmagamiFluffy, lovable vanilla romcom with one of the best character designs I have ever seen. Prime example of an A-grade teenage love story. All the routes are worth playing, particularly that of Morishima, Kaoru, and Ayatsuji. Unique "daily life" gameplay that heightens the experience.Finished0/08.5
EvenicleBasically a lighter, softer Rance with a completely likable cast. Appealing visuals, fun battle system, and well-developed characters. Kathryn is hands down the best character Alicesoft has ever created (yes, I like her even more than Rance). Seriously, it's worth playing the game just for her.Finished0/08.5
Sengoku RanceNot the best in terms of story, but dear god the gameplay is superb. Best battle system from any gameplay-heavy visual novel, period. The cast of JAPAN is diverse and likable, although not having the Leazas crew as part of the main plot is a significant loss.Finished0/08.5
Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no KamenStellar world-building and interesting politics, although Hakuoro isn't competent enough to fill Haku's shoes. On the other hand, Kuon manages to replace Eruru as one of my favorite female leads. Battles are fun and quite forgiving, but some of the later skirmishes can be a bit brutal.Finished0/08.5
Ar Nosurge ~Umareizuru Hoshi e Inoru Uta~Wildly confusing yet unique narrative that only produces more questions as the story progresses, but that's exactly why I like it. Delta/Cassie route is more interesting than that of Ion/Earthes, although all four characters are great. Like with other games in the franchise, the soundtrack is nothing less than stellar.Finished0/08.3
Tears to Tiara II: Haou no MatsueiExcellent world-building based on Roman/Carthage history, showing the extent of the developer's research. Hamil, Tarte, and the gang are all highly likable. Main villain of the first half is easily my favorite Aquaplus/Leaf antagonist. Unfortunately, her replacement is completely forgettable, making the second half less enjoyable. Can be a bit grindy at times.Finished0/08.3
UtawarerumonoGood story and engaging world despite the outdated battle system and aging artstyle. Great second half that culminates to the superb grand finale. Haku is one of my all-time favorite visual novel protagonist due to his charismatic personality.Finished0/08.3
Dangan Ronpa Kibou no Gakuen to Zetsubou no KoukouseiBest Danganronpa game with the most interesting cast. The finale is a total wham moment and the strongest part of the story. Trials are fun, although some of the minigames can be extremely annoying.Finished0/08
G-senjou no MaouStaple "cat-and-mouse" mystery visual novel filled with great suspense. Haru is adorable, although special mention goes to Tsubaki for having the most entertaining evil route. Bland villain, underwhelming reveal in the climax, and the narrative sometimes being too smart for its own good prevent the game for reaching its full potential.Finished0/08
Gyakuten Saiban 3Godot is the ultimate chadlord and enough bump the game up by a few points. However, the trials other than the final one vary greatly in quality. Mainly worth playing just to experience the splendid finale. Spot-on humor like with other games in the franchise.Finished0/08
Kamidori Alchemy MeisterBest gameplay in the medium besides Sengoku Rance. Unfortunately, the worst girl has the best route, while the best girl has the worst route. However, the overall narrative of this game isn't even great to begin with so all is forgiven. Come mainly for the Fire Emblem-style battle system.Finished0/08
White Album 2 ~Introductory Chapter~Nice introduction to the main story, although it's heavily biased towards Kazuma like the anime adaptation. Great music, nice visuals, and a controversial finale that will leave you thinking about it for days. The anime adaptation is a good substitute for those too lazy to read this.Finished0/08
Grisaia no KajitsuAll-star cast with surprisingly great humor and tasteful (though sometimes forceful) drama. Sadly, the quality of the routes is extremely diverse, with Michiru and Yumiko receiving the short end of the stick. Moreover, the best girl only appears in Amane's route.Finished0/07.7
Gyakuten KenjiWatching the excellent chemistry between Miles and Kay is a major part of the game's enjoyment. Investigation feature is nice, though it's been done better in other franchises (e.g. Danganronpa). First and final cases are the strongest. Main villain is somewhat forgettable.Finished0/07.7
Rance VI - Zeth Houkai -First half is a bit mundane and carried mostly by Rance and his savage antics, but the second half is excellent and filled with strong character development. Best world-building among all the Rance games. Huge difficulty spike in battles starting the second half, which dampens the enjoyment.Finished0/07.7
Soukoku no ArterialCard battle system is fun, but later enemies can be unforgiving by exploiting unfair tactics. All three routes have their pros and cons. Devil route has the best side characters and finale, Angel route has the best main characters and story progression, while Human route gives the most advantage in terms of gameplay.Finished0/07.7
Ikusa Megami VeritaQuite a noticeable step down from Zero, but still a fun game nevertheless. Loui is a welcome addition to the main cast, rivaling Celica in terms of best Eushully protagonist. World-building, visuals, and (especially) gameplay are an improvement from Zero, but the story and pacing are inferior. Also more lighthearted, which can be both a good and bad thing.Finished0/07.5
Kangokutou Mary SkelterOne of the better dungeon crawlers with a fascinating fairy tale theme and lovable cast. Classes are a bit unbalanced, with Marshal and Paladin being mandatory in higher difficulties. Decent story, though the plot twist is extremely predictable. The world-building could have been better.Finished0/07.5
Corpse Party BloodCoveredMostly terrifying, sometimes unintentional comedy. Characters are two-dimensional like in most horror media, but the story is genuinely interesting, especially during the second half. Refreshing to see an RPG Maker title that's not a cookiecutter adventure tale.Finished0/07.3
Eiyuu*SenkiSengoku Rance with a softer touch. Nice waifus and H-scenes, but the protagonist's personality is flatter than paper. Plot is somewhat average, though the final arc is a bit heavy-handed. Might be a bit too easy for those who are accustomed to tactical games. Nobunaga is unarguably best girl.Finished0/07.3
Super Dangan Ronpa 2 Sayonara Zetsubou GakuenDespite the cast being less memorable than that of the first game, it manages to be fun experience all-around. Some of the new minigames can be highly annoying. The resort setting allows more activities, but dilutes the suspense. Like with the prequel, the shocking twist in the finale is the main highlight of the story.Finished0/07.3
Yume Miru KusuriAll three routes offer something very different; however, Mizuki's route is far superior to the other two. The theme of Aeka's route has been done better in other visual novels, and Nekoko's route feels extremely random at times. Artstyle is a bit dated, but the dreamy/surreal color palette is nice.Finished0/07.3
Maggot BaitsClockup's strongest title. Perhaps the most interesting story I have read from any H-oriented visual novel. Plot and characters lack solid development, but the driving question was intriguing enough for me to binge the entire thing in two days. EX-tier character designs.Finished0/07
Monmusu Quest! Shuushou ~Makereba Youjo ni Okasareru~Moderately fun at first, though it gets repetitive later on. Alice is a charming main heroine, but just about everyone else is forgettable. Artstyle and soundtrack are below average, so play this mainly for the decent story and gameplay. Oh yeah, and also the entertaining bad ends.Finished0/07
New Dangan Ronpa V3 Minna no Koroshiai ShingakkiKaede had the potential to become the franchise's best protagonist, but then... yeah. The cast is better than that of the second game, but not as good as that of the original. Weakest story in the trilogy, and the twist ending is absolutely underwhelming. On the plus side, Scrum Debate is the coolest minigame in the entire series.Finished0/07
Saya no UtaUnique premise, frightening Lovecraftian atmosphere, and solid horror soundtrack, but unfortunately bogged down by a two-dimensional cast and weak narrative. Too short for its own good, though there is probably so much you can do with this type of story. Endings could have been further expanded.Finished0/07
Gyakuten Saiban 5Although Athena is a highly lovable sidekick and the Matrix minigame is dope, only the final trial is memorable and the main villain is by far the worst in the franchise. Some of the soundtracks are superior to their classic version whereas others are worse.Finished0/06.7
