Description

Nestled between the mountains and the ocean somewhere sits the harbor town of Inogo City, a prosperous place with an atmosphere of the exotic.
It is this city, watched over by the church at the summit of the highest mountain, where a boy and a girl first meet.

The boy's name is Kirinokojima Tomoe. A lonely young man, who believes neither in love nor in happiness.
The girl's name is Aine. One who sings of love to fill the world with happiness, who was born for that very purpose... an angel.

To anyone who saw him, Kirinokojima Tomoe would have seemed to lead a singularly boring life.

He didn't even attempt to befriend others, nor did he have a girlfriend, unsurprisingly. He was involved in no hobbies or interests to speak of.
Waking in the morning only to go off to school, returning home only to sleep. An utterly ordinary, routine life, each day no different from the day before or after it.

But he was not in the least unhappy with his life. For him, a life of "nothing" was also one of "nothing to lose".
Wish for something, and you would only end up getting hurt.
After all, he'd already sampled enough of the world's bitterness for one lifetime.

Until, like a herald of the end of that tranquil existence, an angel appeared.

"Angels". The protectors of human loves. The ones who spin the "red thread", and those who play its melody.

"Love can never bring people happiness.", said Tomoe.
"That's not true at all! Falling in love makes your heart feel all light!", Aine replied.

Tomoe, who soon found himself aiding the "acting angel" with whom he couldn't see eye to eye on anything in her work, is is drawn alongside Aine into deep involvement with others' romantic lives...
The many shapes of love, and the forms of happiness that pass before our eyes every day.
This is their journey to find the true meaning of happiness.
And at that journey's end, his own reason for living on...

<report>Upon only finishing the common route, I had a lot of effusive praise for how novel and ambitious the game's concept was. After finishing all of the heroine routes though, my opinion on the work as a whole cooled a bit. This isn't to say that it's bad by any means - I still think it's decidedly above average and quite enjoyable overall, but it does have some considerable flaws as well that hold it back from greatness.

As previously mentioned, I really enjoyed the common route and thought it was by far the strongest part of the work. I especially enjoyed the structure, which was quite unique and effective at its storytelling - it's a very nice breath of fresh air that foregrounds the love... Read more »

<report>Behold, Bokuten is what happens when a writer doesn't know how to end a story.

This game tries to make love difficult. By that, I mean it presents situations to the player where you have to seriously consider whether or not love is more important than other considerations. Is love more important than accomplishing your dreams? Taking care of your family? Keeping your friendships and promises?

The game presents six vignettes where you are shown a relationship, given background and explanation as to what the problem in said relationship is, and finally are given a choice as to whether or not the relationship should continue. The game tries to make both options have equal weight, and does a... Read more »

<report>Wouldn’t it be better if our heart could fracture and be gone with it the entailing sorrow and pain?

Unfortunately, in the world of Bokuten, beings called Angel would perform angelery to return the fractured shard regardless, believing it would bring back happiness to the person.

The story starts with Tomoe, our antisocial and indifferent protagonist, meeting with the passionate fledging angel Aine. The common route consists of six chapters, each of which tells a love struggle between different people. Inevitably, someone involved would have their heart fractured, and it’d be up to Tomoe and Aine to decide whether or not to return the broken shard to its owner. You will be prompted to... <report>I'm gonna start with the only aspect of "Bokuten", that felt truly relevant to me: There's an actual policy, of doing things differently here. That's the big (personal) positive. Unfortunately, (or in spite of this) this VN is also home to all the possible tropes, you have ever heard or imagined, so we're looking at a "true mixed bag", as far as I'm concerned. This is another "above average romance VN", but lack of trying, is not what's holding it back. It's the actual execution of those distinctive ideas.

I read this because of some flattering remarks concerning the developer, but let me tell you, I had zero expectations when starting this. Even so, I was still very pleased with a... Read more »

<report>Bokuten – Why I Became An Angel is a visual novel developed by Overdrive. The game was originally released for PC in 2013. The version of the game I will be reviewing is the MangaGamer release from 2019. Minimal spoilers in this review, but I will avoid anything that reveals crucial plot elements or twist within this game. I will provide a general outline of the game while also providing my thoughts on it as a visual novel (production value, story, characters, etc.). Anyways, let’s get started!

An Angelic Intervention (Story/Common Route)

Kirinokojima Tomoe lives in pain. A pain that he can never truly resent. An existence that can continue to remain, but never truly find happiness. Tomoe... Read more »

<report>I am not an expert on writing reviews, but I will attempt to give my honest thoughts.

The common route is fantastic. The jumping scenes from character to character was very refreshing, and a great way to tell a story. The issues were interesting, I feel like this could have been expanded on further though. Something I also feel would have taken this novel from good to great is more character development, and more choices so that we are able to connect with them a bit more. I do like the concept of no answer is a correct answer, and I feel like it is very admirable of them to write it this way.

My main issue with the common route however was the 6th chapter, it did not seem to match the... Read more »

<report>I only played an hour and change of this before I threw in the towel. The game looks good enough, and despite some kerning problems (why do visual novels still release with kerning problems?), the font and translation were fine. My problem is not with the presentation. It's with the writing.

Let's do the protagonist first. This is one of the most wet blanket protagonists I've seen. I don't mind grumpy quiet protags, but their thoughts need to be interesting or relatable. They need to have wants and problems. This dude is just bland. Every thought and action as cartoonishly dry as possible. They really try to drive the point home when they describe how he eats all his meals alone in... Read more »
