Description

You awaken in a decrepit old mansion.

A woman with eyes of jade stands before You, informing You that You are the Master of the house, and she Your Maid. However, You have no memories, no concept of self—or, indeed, any certainty that You are even alive.

The Maid invites You to join her on a journey through the mansion's lifeless halls, to behold the numerous tragedies that have befallen its residents. She suggests that among them, perhaps You will find some trace of Yourself.

Beyond the first door lies the year 1603.
It is an era of unparalleled beauty, where art and theatre flourish. Roses bloom abundantly in the garden where the inseparable Rhodes siblings play, and though they appear to be free of worry and strife... not everyone is content to see them happy.

Beyond the second door lies the year 1707.
In this era, the mansion lies in ruins, and a beast dwells within. He claims to yearn for a life of serenity, but it is not long before he yields to his innate savagery and a massacre ensues.

Beyond the third door lies the year 1869.
In this technologically advanced era, people are always on the move. The mansion's master is an ambitious businessman who has invested in the rail industry. However, his obsession with wealth and power leads him to neglect and mistreat his wife.

Beyond the fourth door lies the year 1099.
The Maid tells You that this is the final tale. In this era, You see a young man who claims to be cursed and a girl with white hair, called Giselle, who has been branded a witch and marked for death.

Having borne witness to these four tragedies, each set in a different time and place, You are now free to choose whether You wish to end Your story here... or press on.

But there are those who would say, "You were able to bear them because they weren't your tragedies."

<report>I'll be frank: The House in Fata Morgana has humbled me. It's been a very long while since I found my expectations so fully surpassed by a visual novel. Time and time again, at every point when I believed the spell about to be broken, my habitual cynicism was repulsed not only by the evidence of extraordinary creative labour in every domain of Fata Morgana's production—its distinctly Gothic art, its broad and inexhaustible soundtrack full of lively pastiche, the severe formal unity of its storytelling—but by an exegesis of thematic material rarely seen in visual novels, anime, and manga. This is a really great work, and with all its above virtues taken into account, probably inimitable in... Read more »

<report>Amongst the hundreds of thousands of visual novels that came out in the previous decade, if I had to name one that stands out the most, it would be Fata morgana no Yakata. Unlike most visual novels that shove in H content or stay within a certain aesthetic, Novectacle took a leap of faith and produced Fata Morgana to fit the vision they wanted artistically, not just to sell.

The first thing i want to go into is one of the more controversial elements, the presentation, apart from the already very different artwork, Fata Morgana is also known for its unique sountrack and prose(in the english translation at least). The prose reflects the "old" feeling of the setting that i cannot go into... Read more »

<report>The House in Fata Morgana stands out in the sea of officially localised visual novels, which largely stick to either Key-style slice of life, moege, or nakige subgenres, or post-Infinity series kids stuck in a death arena subgenre. Though there's plenty of good VNs among those, this game stands out for how different it is from anything else in the genre.

The premise is that the main character wakes up in a mysterious mansion, and there meets a maid who seems to know him, even though he has no memory of that person. She proceeds to give a tour of the mansion, recounting its sinister history and in doing so attempting to return his memories to him. To say much more than this would be to... Read more »

<report>THFM is a pretty long visual novel that will immerse you in many tragedies, all related to a cursed mansion. The game is 99% of reading and the rest for interactions ; actually my first fear was to not get into the story because of that and the fact that it was mostly angst. The tale certainly takes its time, but it ended up captivating me to the point of not wanting to stop reading, like a good book :)

❤ A high quality writing with many mature themes addressed
❤ A rollercoaster of emotions! we witness so many tragedies and despite everything we cling to the end hoping for a satisfactory outcome for the characters (;v;)
❤ The truth about “the Master” which covers topics that I did not... Read more »

<report>The House in Fata Morgana is the first full length visual novel produced by Novectacle. It was released on New Year’s Eve in 2012. The narrative follows the lives of residents inhabiting a cursed mansion during their respective time periods. Over eight years after the initial release of Fata Morgana, it is the seventh highest rated visual novel on VNDB and the highest rated game of 2021 on Metacritic (during the time of this review). As someone who has experienced hundreds of acclaimed films, books, and video games, the House in Fata Morgana is the most cohesive, dynamic, and extensive singular work I’ve come across.

The sole writer, Keika Hanada, spent over a year outlining the narrative... Read more »

<report>Mystery is one of my favourite genres, but also a genre in which I only love a few works. Mystery is so hard to do right, both in terms of keeping the story engaging while not being confusing, and having a satisfying answer to all the questions that the reader has had over the course of the story. To come across a story like Fata Morgana, which does such an incredible job with its mystery, is such a pleasure. Twisting its story and changing your perspective of situations so many times without it ever getting confusing or convoluted, and having a record amount of plottwists without ever having any misses. The story has so many different plot threads that are being woven together into this... Read more »

<report>This is by far the best visual novel I have read, I'm not sure I have the words to do it justice but I will give it a try. Maybe listing things will be easier..

The music

When I first opened this up and the first track played I was already captivated and further on it never failed to set the correct mood for whichever scenes they were for. For good reason since it was all made especially for this story and it really shows.

I love that the singing is in different langauges
(edit 21/7/22 - I recently learned that the lyrics are in fact in other languages where at first I thought they were not since I could not recognize any of those languages, which prompted me to correct it here)
I get... Read more »

<report>The game has a unique atmosphere, different from every visual novel that I played. The aesthetics of the game is beautiful: the game has a gothic theme, with latin and portuguese OSTs, beautiful background or extremely severe ones and amazing scenes that both of them can make someone say "wow, that's really a thing".
The story is nothing less, but the aesthetics can't be leave out. The characters are pretty deep and humans, and the game don't leave details about it. You can feel the feelings, hatred and empathize with some of them, and that is the game structure to hook you and get in your heart after it. The details of everything in the plot are there from the beginning and makes me... Read more »

<report>While I don't think that this visual novel *quite* the peak of the medium, it definitely worthwhile and worth experiencing. A lot of people before me already made a point about why it's so amazing, so I will focus on points that were bothering me instead. The first four doors are kinda weak, being carried out mostly by the atmosphere (amazing score and artstyle create an impression like the mansion is indeed travelling through different time periods), the inclusion of timed choices without any indication that those choices are timed is a bit weird and the pacing is all over the place with important story events being interrupted by ridiculously long flashbacks. Although, I have no idea how... Read more »

<report>Fata morgana no Yakata is a game with English translation available on steam. While I had never heard of the producer nor the game before, I bought the game placing my trust in users' ability in distinguishing good games from bad ones on vndb. While this game is not at all what I expected, all in all it was a great game. It is an unconventional VN, contains lots of angst, but also has feels-good moments.

It's hard to describe what kind of game Fata Morgana is. Three parts plot twisters where stories are not what they initially seem, one part with religious overtone, two parts next-level queer fiction, one part steins;gate (sort of), the rest of it a painful yet all the more beautiful... Read more »

<report>EDIT========

OVERALL: This writer is truly a great writer, I'd love to sit down with them and have a chat and learn from them. But this particular VN is too worried about making (very minor spoiler, just about writing style) connections, parallels, maintaining an OCD-tier level perfectionism, etc. instead of working on making the story actually more interesting, touching, emotional, or human -- or making the characters more fleshed out, more varied, with more layers than just a collection of plot summary points and character wiki entry bullet points.
Also it has a few instances of the i can fix her "trope" (dunno if it's actually a trope) which I like in general, it was done ok here, we... Read more »

<report>Fata Morgana is the closest thing to a perfectly solid visual novel one can get, and I find myself empty of any criticism. All aspects, writing, music, art, and so on are all master level in quality.

Fata Morgana is recognised for this. Showered in prestige and fame, with each of its elements being spoken of in high praise to death, Fata Morgana is rightfully recognised as the high quality work it is, and so rather than repeating said praises, I'll spare both of us the time sink and talk about something else instead.

Fata Morgana is an excellent read that excels in everything it attempts to do.

Despite that, or rather, as a result of that, Fata Morgana is unable to reach a true peak... Read more »

<report>The game left a very good impression on me. For simplicity, I will make a structured review.

History.
The history was fascinating. The plot structure is interesting, each door has its own tragedy (which is often lacking in novels) I read and could not tear myself away, despite the shooting, explosions, and the war outside the window (hello Ukrainians)
The only thing that confused me was that not all questions were fully disclosed in the original game (((
I understand that Michel should be an angel in the story, but I still don’t understand why his transformation occurred and whether he was a girl from birth or he was asexual .. These gender problems, so to speak, were a little difficult
