Description

You awaken in a decrepit old mansion.

A woman with eyes of jade stands before You, informing You that You are the Master of the house, and she Your Maid. However, You have no memories, no concept of self—or, indeed, any certainty that You are even alive.

The Maid invites You to join her on a journey through the mansion's lifeless halls, to behold the numerous tragedies that have befallen its residents. She suggests that among them, perhaps You will find some trace of Yourself.

Beyond the first door lies the year 1603.
It is an era of unparalleled beauty, where art and theatre flourish. Roses bloom abundantly in the garden where the inseparable Rhodes siblings play, and though they appear to be free of worry and strife... not everyone is content to see them happy.

Beyond the second door lies the year 1707.
In this era, the mansion lies in ruins, and a beast dwells within. He claims to yearn for a life of serenity, but it is not long before he yields to his innate savagery and a massacre ensues.

Beyond the third door lies the year 1869.
In this technologically advanced era, people are always on the move. The mansion's master is an ambitious businessman who has invested in the rail industry. However, his obsession with wealth and power leads him to neglect and mistreat his wife.

Beyond the fourth door lies the year 1099.
The Maid tells You that this is the final tale. In this era, You see a young man who claims to be cursed and a girl with white hair, called Giselle, who has been branded a witch and marked for death.

Having borne witness to these four tragedies, each set in a different time and place, You are now free to choose whether You wish to end Your story here... or press on.

But there are those who would say, "You were able to bear them because they weren't your tragedies."

<report>One of (if not the very) best visual novels i have ever read. From the music to the art and from the characters to the story, everything in this visual novel has been induced with love, passion and attention. For any person looking to read a mystery novel worth its money, look no further. The house in fate morgana is simply that good.

<report>This got recommended for me if i like Umineko, which i frankly don't quite understand as they are very different stories. Personally, i guess i am the odd one out as i really liked the Short Stories in the Beginning and the Main Story less so. Maybe because a lot of the Stuff kept repeating itself from different perspectives, especially at the end it got so bad that i skimmed through a lot of Stuff and easily kept up with the Story and what happened despite that. It is a Shame because the Artstyle, Music and Atmosphere are all top notch and at the beginning i was really intrigued. Still, i can see why this is new and beloved, the individual Stories alone are some great Drama at times

<report>A superb narrative experience with masterful, beautiful BGM to compensate for the lack of voice acting.

The level of interconnectivity in this game is really something else. Lots of previously mentioned details come up time and time again that I would never remember because they seemed trivial.

Though fatamoru has distinct, typical JP scene writing that often stands out quite a bit, impossible to hide in the TL, it never managed to make me hate the work and I wouldn't consider it major criticism. Whatever annoyance it causes, it's superseded by appreciation for the things it does well.

The art style, too, grows on you. It was something that made me reluctant to play, given how creepy it is, but it very much suits the atmosphere.

Dark Souls of visual novels, anyone?

<report>My best VN ever nothing comes close. Indeed a gem and shows that a vn is an art. It has some of the best romance (for me the best romance) ever. And doest make the story too complicated to follow. So a must-recommended VN. It's an experience you hardly forget.

<report>This VN was totally out of my comfort zone. I have never read romance before though I had high hopes.

I must say music and visuals were one of the best I have ever seen. It compansate lack of voice acting and there were times where I felt like I was on a musical or theater rather than reading VN (in a good way).

I liked characters (all of them). I enjoyed thier development however I didn't care for them enough to make me cry.

I appreciate the first part of the story where you witness 4 tragedies. It was very well written. Without spoiling anything I can't go much to the details but I will say the remaining doors feels superficial / forced. At the end it has a deeper idea but the second half of the story wasn't compelling.

My favourite doors are 1st and 7th - thrilling, unique story.

<report>Fata Morgana was an unbelievably depressing read. It is gothic fiction alright. It is a misery simulator unlike any other game I've read. However, it really knows how to build suspense and dramatic irony. Beyond that, it is also very human. Characters in this game behave like people would in real life - and have very flawed but very real emotions. People regard one another with prejudice, fear, hatred, and frequently miscommunicate. They treat each other very, very poorly, but no one is ever a complete monster either. Amidst all of this shittiness, the human spirit shines through. This game is about exactly that. It is about a group of very unfortunate people who experience the worst the world has to offer them, and how their human spirits shine through.

<report>I mean, what is there to say? If you like gothic thrillers than this is a must-play! It's a little slow towards the beginning but once you reach the halfway point you'll be hooked. The last third of my playthrough was just constant sobbing. A true Kamige.

<report>I really liked the idea of this, but I had to stop playing after about 5 hours. I've had people tell me the beginning is slow and I just need to push through to get to the good part. Maybe I will pick this up again some other time, but I don't generally like VNs or books where I have to push through hours of boring parts to get to the good stuff. The payoff isn't worth it to me generally. I also wasn't a fan of the music or the art style. Was really looking forward to a horror novel but this was a let down to me.

<report>This game is an incredible experience!! I think it's safe to say I've never played anything like it. It's really fascinating!

Pros: the characters are complex and very interesting. The art is superb!! The story is very well done, intriguing and full of twists and turns. The music is just... wow!! Almost everything in the game is close to perfection. Very good dialogues.

Cons: It didn't need to be so long. There were some boring parts.

A lot of people love this game and recommend it and I join them!! :)

<report>A superb story about redemption with heavy -- perhaps too heavy -- biblical allegories, featuring handsome -- albeit inconsistent -- artwork and likely the best OST of any visual novel. My main complaint is that the writer lays on the pathos a bit too thick at points, to the detriment of subtlety.

<report>The House in Fata Morgana ignores most of the “rules” Japanese visual novels seem to follow and tries something different. There isn’t much comedic relief, nor overly stereotypical characters to be found, the soundtrack and writing resemble more of a theatre play than your typical visual novel and the artstyle is much heavier in color than what we are customed to. Even if you won’t end up loving it, the experience will definitely leave an impression of some kind.

<report>A mystery story taking place in the gothic era (1400s) which opens doors for creativity and supernatural elements. In turn this creates its own original and heartfelt story. It kept me pulled in for the entire length of it. Characters are likeable and someone that you can care about.

I just replayed this game since my first playthrough was years ago and I have to stay that it still hit the same.

<report>Beautiful art and soundtrack. The first three doors (~12 hrs) are pretty boring to get through due to the fact the VN is stuck in the "character introduction" stage over and over. However, the engagement drastically improves after this.

I'd say it once again takes a dip in Chapter 8, since it feels like a story that's just... so childish and fanservice-centric compared to everything else. Plus the dialogue between characters is really unnatural and cartoonish. If it were up to me I'd suggest entirely overhauling that last story, especially since it leads to the conclusion.

I'd rate Fata Morgana no Yakata perhaps as low as a 7.5/10... if it weren't for that amazing Chapter 7 and the way it ties to everything else. Holy shit. Holy. Shit. 8.5/10.

Also--amazing, natural LGBTQ+ rep.

<report>Groundbreaking and foundational, its sense of development is a deconstruction of employment segregation and the powerful performances are truly comprehensive of their poignant characters while the nuance in the direction complements a layered screenplay. The comedy is tasteful and delivers a critique about society in pure elegant, exquisite, endeavour. I can't put my finger on what's wrong because there isn't anything, masterful storytelling from a masterful person. Top of the decade. Top of the century. Top of my life, it's all downhill now

<report>One of the best fictional stories I've read (so far!). I love the build-up of the storyline, with each door being treated as it's own chapter with subtle hints to the overall plot. I also loved how each door, or chapter, references similar stories but with a twist (Romeo & Juliet, Beauty and the Beast, Othello...). The Victorian Gothic settings and artstyle really tie into the story. It's grim, dark, gloomy backgrounds fit the tone perfectly. Overall, just an amazing heartwrenching and bittersweet visual novel.

<report>Highly recommend, great story, great art, great music.

One of the best VN I've ever read. Took me about 50 hours to complete but oh was it so worth it. There's really nothing else like this one.

Just read it!

<report>Very well written from the start to finish. Good pacing, very good cast. It has the best ship in fiction for me so far. The Seventh Door & The Third Door are two of my favorite arcs/routes in fiction. Also, really good soundtracks. It does have some issues tho which I can't talk about here.
