<report>Baldr Sky is one of the best recent VNs and JRPGs to have been localised to the West, delivering an entertaining story, memorable characters, and robust action RPG combat.

It's set in a cyberpunk vision of urban Japan in the aftermath of a tragedy called Gray Christmas, which left an entire city in ruins. Local and federal governments, a private corporation, a research team and a religious cult are implicated in the event, with each party blaming the others. The survivors who comprise the bulk of the main cast include alumni of an esteemed school, who believe they had been witness to suspicious events prior to the disaster during their school days.

The game takes place from the... Read more »

<report>I really wanted to like Baldr Sky. I really did. It is classic cyberpunk. It is heavily inspired by Neuromancer. It even directly references it at one point with the quote "the sky is dyed the color of a tv tuned to a dead channel." However, the pacing is fucked. It was torture to read at times. It's really long but moves really slow. Stop and start is the best way to describe it. Like how I'm writing these sentences. The "good" parts, the meat of the experience that actually has some kind of meaning or message, are buried underneath a mountain of bullshit. The story constantly goes back to this annoying high school romcom phase of the protagonist's life that is the bane of my fucking... Read more »

<report>Normally, in visual novels, they'll make you play filler parts until the story gets serious, and you put up with them for the punchy parts. But here, everyday life and the fillers arts are not boring, just as nothing to be taken seriously. After these warm-ups are over, when the story gets serious, it never reaches a striking point, and there is never anything surprising in the story. The story writing is very mediocre. And is this story bearable for a game that will be played for 70 hours? Absolutely not for me.

Coming to the worst part, it doesn't seem like what we experience on each route is changing. We experience the same things when there is another character with us. The same place... Read more »

<report>Something that I find bothersome about very lengthy Visual Novels is the fact that they often take literally tens of hours until their pacing starts to pick up and the plot really becomes more involved. Getting to that point tends to feel like quite a drag to me and is the main reason why I usually prefer shorter stories.

Baldr Sky takes a completely different approach, not only throwing the reader right in the thick of it but also consistently keeping the pace up afterwards, while still having its calm and quiet moments. The first playthrough / route feels very refreshing and enjoyable thanks to that.

After that however, it gets progressively worse in my opinion. The game consists of six... Read more »

<report>Baldr Sky Dive1 Review (The finest worldbuilding, hampered by endless repetition)

- Synthesized impressions
Baldr Sky Dive1 is a maddening VN, that keeps taunting you with glimpses of the future, of its true potential and how good things are gonna get. Before you get there however, the amount of clutter, reiteration and even the positive circumstantial topics, can get you to lose interest in the source material.

The worst assault, comes in the form of significant loss to you, as a VN reader, if you were to drop it. The latter part of Chinatsu's route, is all the incentive you need, to read Dive2. I think of my 40 hours with Baldr Sky Dive1, as a test of my patience. I was rewarded with... Read more »

<report>Gonna try and keep this review spoiler-free but anyway:

STORY

World-building is not too grandiose, partially thanks to the not so uncommon setting but the atmosphere has a bit of surrealism within which can be quite refreshing. Got some nice locations. The grand scheme of things is interesting, but the lower plane containing multiple factions vying for supremacy can be further polished to make them feel a bit less dull.

Plot-wise, it is pretty straightforward for most parts. But for real, almost everything in this VN is laid out that way because I feel like they are not even trying to hide all of these foreshadowings or twists which is commendable yet a bit funny lmao (can be mindblowing... Read more »

<report>I have so many conflicted feeling about this.

Dive 1 feels like a LONG LONG Prologue in a way.
Is it boring? NO
Stuff actually happens A LOT

Visual wise I do love the art style and the feel. It is still an "old" game and the art is so non-HD that it kinda hurt my eye a bit in a few moments when they zoom in at the CG.

The music is so good, every track fit and I was jamming to it the entire time.

The gameplay is definitely not just reading the vn, since this game also includes a beat them up style combat system. TBH this is way too good, I have never spent so much time trying to get new moves and make different combos. It was just a blast. 10/10 enjoyment.

The difficulty of dive 1 is... Read more »
