Description

Continues from directly after the events at the end of Itsuwari no Kamen/Mask of Deception.

"...I leave Her Highness... in your hands."
"Nekone, live on... and find happiness."

With these final words, Oshtor's soul finally found peace... leaving Haku entrusted with his sister and the princess. For the sake of his friends, and to fulfill his promise, Haku casts aside the name he was given... and dons his fallen friend's mask, choosing to live on as Oshtor.

Armed with his wits and the power of Oshtor's name, Haku faces a battle more dire than any before. Nekone steels herself to support Haku through whatever comes, suppressing the pain of her dear brother's death. Their friends mourn the loss of two dear comrades: Haku, whom they believe dead, and Kuon, who left them for her homeland.

It is here, on the cusp of a new conflict, where we return to this land. The flames of war are about to consume Ennakamuy... and soon, all of Yamato.

<report>I was loving it, almost giving it a 9 or 10, but then came the ending, which in my opinion is horrible, it seems to me that they tried to rush a plot point that had barely been developed all at once in the last few hours of the game and it just got ridiculous, I really wish they had stopped at the end of the "war arc" and continued this whole legacy of humanity thing in a 4th game, where they would have time to develop this plotpoint properly.

<report>A perfect ending to the Utawarerumono trilogy, this is where we see all the development of the main cast wrap up in an emotional behemoth of a game. While not perfect, as I find Kuon to be weaker than her MoD counterpart, the final arc can become kind of padded out, and has some weird decisions, I love the more arc-based structure, and the gameplay has slight changes that improves upon it. All in all, if you like the first and second ones, you'll like this one.

<report>Starts out great, maintains its greatness, and then almost completely drops off a cliff in terms of quality before rescuing itself at the last second. Woshis and his cub scouts were a mistake, Kuon is best girl and deserves eternal happiness.

<report>What I came for: The interesting Sci-Fi backstory & cute animal-eared girls doing cute things.
What I got: Endless padding of the story with pointless wars (75%), cute girls doing cute things (15%), gameplay that's fun for a short while but gets tedious really fast (5%) and an interesting Sci-Fi backstory that does actually tie in to the original game (5%). The worst part is that the gameplay sequences get longer and more frequent at the same time that the story finally starts to get interesting, so even that part was hard to enjoy.

This would have been an excellent sequel to Utawarerumono if the war subplot was thrown out, the gameplay toned down and the remainder was merged into Utawarerumono: Itsuwari no Kamen. As is, it felt like a waste of time.

<report>Really great but not perfect, the first arc goes on too long, some questionable choice by the character that are hard to make sense of, some conveniences and cliche for the sake of plot here and there.
Still all that ended up overshadowed for me by how invested i was in the characters, how much i enjoyed them, they're interaction etc...

As with the first two the music, voices, art and gamepaly are S tier.

Mc journey and development is amazing, quite and emotional roller coaster of a story, a bunch of good plot twist.

Outstanding trilogy of visual novel, unforgettable cast of characters, S Tier production value, enjoyable while imperfect story, if you enjoyed the two others you'll like this one, recommended !

<report>A love letter to the Utawarerumono franchise.
The story of Utawarerumono comes to an end in this installment.
The denouement of Haku and all the mystery in the world is resolved here, without plot holes and plot conveniences.
Recommended.

<report>My first and only review because this series is very dear to me. The pinnacle of fiction. Nothing has topped this and it'll be that way for a long time. Don't you ever get tired of dark, meaningless, and unfufilling misery jerk stories. Only you get to decide how you want to live and enjoy your life. The last 5% is one of this VN is best experience in life so don't miss it. This is humanity at its peak so don't make up reasons to ruin it and let yourself enjoy it for what it is.

Never a dull moment.

<report>Utawarerumo – Mask of Truth review: a masquerade of identities

Before reading:
The first part of the review will be 100% spoiler-free for all three Utawarerumono games. It will probably be brief since I can’t enter too much in detail. Is it meant for people who just want to know if reading this series it’s worth their time (YES).

The second part will contain full spoiler for all three games. There I will go more in-depth with precise points of all three stories. It will be hidden with spoiler settings on and there will be a warning.

Also, I haven’t played the RPG part of the game and the post-game is still untouched. Keep that in mind.

Mask of Truth brings us back almost to the exact... Read more »

<report>The production value is top-notch, but I just can't see how with the IMO rather bland story this would deserve a 10/10 rating - I barely felt much emotion throughout the playthrough. Saw how it would end from miles away, and it developed just as expected. (Of course, it was impossible to predict the exact details, but the general direction and the final climax were thoroughly presaged by the plethora of hints from the first two installments.) Is it that I've become considerably harder to please compared to the time when I first started reading VNs? Or more likely it would be better to apply the standards for other JRPGs instead of for conventional VNs to this series anyways (i.e. people... Read more »

<report>Many people say that the original Utawarerumono is above average, Mask of Deception is a slog (due to being 90% slice-of-life) and Mask of Truth is one of the best visual novels ever made. Imagine my disappointment when I find out that this hyped up and supposedly legendary game is just yet another drawn out shounen with an awfully convenient story and lots of wish fulfilment harem tropes. I'll try to mark the biggest, Mask of Truth specific spoilers, but it's hard to talk about the game without being specific, so read this review at your own risk.

I won't talk too much about the positive aspects, as they're all quite obvious. The trilogy has very high production values for visual novels... Read more »

<report>TL;DR: Okay story. Great characters (when things aren't serious). Okay gameplay. Overall not sure if worth it, depends on your taste, but speaking """objectively""" it isn't a masterpiece.

INTRO (CAN SKIP): Given the increasing ratings of this trilogy on VNDB, even given the fact that fans that stick with a franchise will always rate it high and people that dislike it won't finish it aka sequel score inflation, I expected this last part of the trilogy to be much better than #1, and significantly better than #2 - like my experience with Muv-Luv Alternative and White Album 2 (which was already quite good from the start).

GENERIC PRAISE (CAN SKIP): However, while this visual novel has a lot... Read more »

<report>Definitely AAA production values and A-tier arts & musics. However the overall plot and logic are disappointingly AA(all-age) level. Those are awfully convenient and served as a path for purely entertaining development rather than a sensible story. It also takes "One thing at a time" guideline to its core design. Most characters represent a single surface-level personality and can be distinguished as "black" or "white" at a time. Almost every scene also focuses on a single conflict or a personal event, rarely ever deliver more than one at a time despite an obviously contradiction when not doing so, thus making it hard for an audience like me who loves to enjoy a chaotic story, with gruesome... <report>I try to make this as spoiler free as possible. And that means I won't spoil anything from Mask of Deception either, so if you haven't read any of those, rest assured, you won't be spoiled. I also break this review down into two sections, the main review which only talks about it as a VN and a gameplay addendum section, for those who are interested in the gameplay (since the ratio between VN and SRPG is about 80/20 and since this is VNDB I wanted to seperate the gameplay part from the visual novel part):

<report>Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth

(If some doubts arise reading this, you can check my review for Mask of Deception, the previous title)

- Synthesized impressions
Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth picks up on some of the best features that you can find in any VN, puts them together and creates something which outclasses some of the greater names in the medium. The main attractions are the characters, how they progress and also their interactions.

Reviewing Mask of Truth and talking about the many good things present in it, is a herculean task and the first time I'm actually having trouble, structuring a review in my mind.
If you read Mask of Deception, stop reading the review and go check out... Read more »

<report>The epic conclusion of a beautiful trilogy. Amazing and epic visual novel, with wonderful thematics, a overall great cast and a lot of feels. It's the only game/visual novel that made me really cry. The MC is just incredible and has a very natural evolution, and he's my favorite character in any medium. The music was really beautiful and very well orchestrated. The visual aspect is the best among the visual novels I played (colors, backgrounds, CG) and it helps making the visual novel even stronger. The characters are overall really solid except for some of them (Fumirul and Ougi mostly) and nearly all of them are well developped and are maturing in this last episode of the trilogy... <report>Throwing here my opinion to balance out these two 5 scores. I don't really think you would need a review after finishing the previous part, but I'm already holding the keyboard...

As other guys complained, the wars episodes, while having their good moments, were lengthy and repetative: "I'll use akuruka and save us all", "But you'll die!", "I'll use it anyway", "Ok".

You can almost feel the pain of the storywriter trying to make main cast characters left from the initial story meaningful to the plot, even dedicating an arc to most of them, but outside these arcs these characters do nothing, but voice their template reactions and make things annoying (yeah, I'm talking about you Rulutieth... <report>*This review doesn’t have spoilers for Mask of Truth, but it does have major spoilers for Mask of Deception.*

tl;dr: A solid sequel that handles completing the plot threads from the previous games incredibly well while also being a solid step up in terms of game play.

Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth is the third game in the Utawarerumono series and a direct continuation of the story that began in Mask of Deception. To be clear, when I say that I mean that Mask of Deception isn’t a complete story without Mask of Truth and Mask of Truth isn’t a complete story without Mask of Deception. This is in contrast to the first, which should absolutely be played before playing either of these, but it... Read more »

<report>“He who would accomplish little need sacrifice little; he who would achieve much must sacrifice much. He who would attain highly must sacrifice greatly.”

― James Allen, As a Man Thinketh

The most grandiose way to end a series. Over a hundred and fifty hours spent alongside some of the most well-written characters, each one more charming than the other. With the stakes at an all-time high, there is nothing they won't sacrifice for the greater good. A story about sacrifice, and one done well.

Taking the risk of making an entire 50hr game just the stepping stool of this one was well worth it; Mask of Truth pays off with the greatest of endings. From the vast wallpaper-worthy CGs, the... Read more »

<report>Utawarerumono mask of truth is a solidly written story with great characters, ost, storyline and gameplay

Protagonist: In this entry we see amazing character development for our protagonist haku.Seeing him going from a lazy man to what he has become now was extremely satisfying.

Characters:The game is filled with amazing characters like anju , rulutieh and kuon who are now much more mature in comparison to mask of deception.

Ost:The soundtrack is one of the best in the medium

Gameplay: The gameplay is a massive improvement over the previous title we now have much more battles and many more units.
If you are a fan of visual novels with srpg elements than this game is made for you.

<report>Utawarerumono is my second Visual Novel, and its narrative captivated me from the start itself. It immediately engrosses us, prompting a curiosity to unravel each sequence. The enigmatic start of Hakuworo's and Haku's journey, both awakening as amnesiacs and gradually discerning their purpose through diverse kingdoms, gives you a very compelling sense of mystery. Throughout their ventures, they encounter quite a few individuals who, despite not being extensively fleshed out as standalone characters, contribute significantly to the overarching experience. These characters, who come together as their family, lend emotional depth to the story. The narrative unfolds like a personified puzzle... Read more »
