Description

You play the role of Azai Kyousuke, the son of a legendary gangster infamous in the underworld. You spend your time listening to Bach, playing God at school and covertly working for your stepfather, a ruthless financial heavyweight. This idyllic existence is broken when two individuals appear in the city - a beautiful girl named Usami Haru with hair you could get lost in for days, and a powerful international gangster known only as "Maou". Almost without delay, the two begin a deadly cat-and-mouse game, bringing you and your friends into the crossfire. Plotting, political intrigue and layer upon layer of interlocking traps are the weapons in this epic battle of wits.

<report>I stumbled on this VN, and was interested in it based off of everything I saw, as it matched every note I liked about VN's. Unfortunately when I started however the protagonist hit every sour note that made them unbearable to me somehow, and there was seemingly no redemption by the time I put the game down.

Don't make the same mistake I did.

When I came back to play it I was doubtful since I remembered not liking it, but I heard so many positive reviews and felt the urge to, so I came back and experienced an amazing story with likeable characters, which made me absolutely fall in love with this game. It presents a well done mystery, leaving subtle hints, and every reveal hits right, all the while the characters brought the game's mood up. It gave me MANY emotions and chills. Play it.

<report>I really really dig it. It just really appeals to me in a lot of different ways, from addressing the constant inner struggles that individuals have of committing evil acts, which I find really relatable, to having a cute, yet outstandingly smart companion to solve crimes with, all while having a soundtrack that is composed of modified classical music. Each different path with the various girls had such a touching story to tell. If you play the paths in a specific order, which the game kind of nudges you towards, you end up left with some unanswered questions about the main mystery which makes it more tempting to just jump right back in and start up the next route. I whole heartily recommended the title. It's appealing in a number of different ways between the mystery, humor, and romance.

<report>IT WAS SO GOOD UNTIL IT WASN'T. Genuinely so good for the first 4 chapters and side routes but my fucking god the ENDING was just so bad. Worth a read just cause the previous chapters were so fun but i cannot describe the fury i feel at this ending.

<report>Really, just a fantastically written story with sufficient intrigue and an absolutely masterful soundtrack. Seeing Der Erlkunig referenced again and again was a treat, and the general respect for classical music is something you don't see often. The characters are all likeable, for the most part, the mc is unique, the twists are legitimately well-done, and for a drama-action-mystery, the humor is on point. Only one complaint:

Why on earth did they do Shiratori like that? You call that a route? It's just disappointing.

<report>The game is fine and sometimes interesting, but it was a tough read which I didn't like much of the time.

The story itself is pretty good but there were imo tons of boring moments such as Maou's games. Not all of them were interesting for me, most of them were boring. However I like the epilogue. It was really good. Overall the game deserves 7/10. Is it worth reading? Well I wouldn't read it again however there are only two novels that I'd read again so I think you should try for youself.

<report>Excellent visual novel with a more down to Earth anarchist figure than in any anime I've ever seen, the soundtrack it's just remixed classical music so if you like that sort of thing you'll probably end up downloading the whole soundtrack. I can't give it a 9 due to the fact that all of the alternative routes are quite lazy, it seems like they've only put some effort into Tsubaki's route.

<report>I remember playing this VN with some kind of hope for a good mystery VN: investigating, gathering the clues, asking the witnesses,... You know, classic detective stuffs. What I found is a thriller VN with some mystery elements and good (kinda) action sequences. It's way different than what I thought it would be but it's good in its own way. And there's a twist in the game but I was spoiled so I can not make a judgment on whether that twist was good or not.

IMO, it's a good VN that will worth your time if you want a thriller VN that have a decent story with good enough cast (Mizuha is the best girl, BTW) with a little bit of mystery.

<report>This VN certainly knows how to play with feelings. I think it did that well. Anger, sadness, happiness, love, disgust amongst many others were rising within me.
The emotional impact it had on me in the end made me give that high score.

One can argue about the structure of the game, whether it is good or bad, at least there isn't a forced route order.
While I thought it doesn't do the flow any good, it turned out better than I imagined.

Heroines: very diverse.
Haru is my fav, dispite having my doubts about her character in the beginning.
Haru>Tsubaki>=Mizuha>(=Yuki)>Kanon - I didn't dislike Kanon at all, but she felt the weakest of them.

Engaging routes Haru>Tsubaki>Mizuha>(=Yuki)>=Kanon

What left a bad taste: The word 'disgusting' gets used disgustingly often. She isn't disgusting!

<report>What G-senjou sets out to do, it does well and checked all those boxes for me. With great main characters along with an antagonist that fits the storytelling well and in clever ways. A protagonist and main heroine that had more to them than first impressions.
Creating an immersive cat and mouse thriller that kept me on my toes wondering what happens next. With one of the most satisfying and emotional ending segments that I have read.

This was a game that surprised me and I never expected to enjoy it as much as I did. It's not perfect, with some clunky/clumsy drawbacks like under-developed branch off routes and a few dramatic scenes that came off as a little bit corny.

I highly recommend reading this for a good time, the entertainment is worth it.

<report>What a shitheap. Ive never been more pissed off reading a vn. Excellent characters, comedy, and thriller elements ruined by asinine plot decisions. The plot twist is shit, chapter 4 is garbage, and a baffling epilogue really bring down the whole experience. Id say its worth reading just for kanon's route and chapter 5 though if you're that interested. Whenever this vn does something well it really nails it and when it falls it falls hard.

<report>It is a rare case for me when high expectations were met. And expectations were high because I liked the previous game of these developers: Sharin no Kuni.
Constant tension and drama, plot twists, goosebumps and wet eyes! Everything I like. I read this VN back in 2018 and still remember it.
And I one of people that liked this plot twist.

<report>For me the game was not able to stay fun all the time because of the poorly thought out route system, the different routes end up slowing down and negatively affecting the true route, but in general it is a good game. Nice art, good characters, one of the best plot i ever see and a generic but good soundtrack.

<report>Enjoyable in parts, but overall it's a poorly paced, incoherent and disjointed mess. Ostensibly it's an underworld drama in which the main characters search for a high profile criminal, in a battle of wits between two supposedly highly intelligent characters.

Unfortunately, its characters are inconsistent from one scene to the next, with their actions dictated by the requirements of the story. Characters go from being able to formulate or see through convoluted schemes using extraordinary insight, to doing deeply dumb things that make you wonder how they've managed to live for as long as they have. They'll go from changing their world views in an instant, and characters will go from not... Read more »

<report>Not gonna lie to you, this is a hate/love relationship. If you played any of the 5pb games you know that the MCs are grating assholes that make you wanna put that game down in the first hour. Everything the Characters are going through is deserved or just happenstance. And it's not really a moral quandry, it is all explained away cause that is cause of their upbringing. Which is fairly dumb.

It's a bit like someone took Grisaia's Blueprint, put it into Yakuza territory and REALLY wanted to show off some twists. Most of them fall right flat. I can't really sensibly give this any higher than a 6... I'd probably rate it a bit lower if I didn't just finish the "true" route. The only one that... Read more »

<report>[No spoiler review] G-senjou is a mix between a cat and mouse crime / underworld type story, and a multi heroine route school dating VN. Does it work? Overall yes it does. You do however have to overlook some slightly eye-rolling plot conveniences and twists; but it delivers a roller coaster adventure with a solid conclusion. Thematically this VN is about how our past shapes our future; and our struggles in the present to forge ahead in spite of these challenges.

One positive of G-senjou is it doesn't get too bogged down in slice of life scenes. Granted it certainly contains that, but overall the plot moves along quite well and is filled with suspense and action throughout. The various... Read more »

<report>If I had to describe this in one sentence it would probably be:
"As a kinetic novel this would have been okay."

The story is decent enough, albeit littered with red herrings and deus ex machina moments.
About halfway through you start to recognize them beforehand and see the "genius" twists coming from a mile away.

There are a lot of other things that bothered me about it though.

For the most part, the MC is an insufferable jackass, who I found hard to like or sympathize with.
"That's how he's supposed to be" does not make it any more pleasant to read through.

Many heroines are insignificant to the story and get ignored almost completely. Except for 1 chapter, at which you can enter... Read more »

<report>I deemed to play a few eroges before I submit my first review and so here we are!

I wouldn't by any means G-senjou call bad but as you start to approach the end, the story gets more and more discombobulated in terms of writing. While being an eroge, it has a decent mysterious, thriller-ish plot with detective aspects, while all the time challenging the reader a bit into lighter mindgames. More on that later. There is some slight comedy included mainly thanks to the role of you best male friend who is a nicely done sleezy playboy under cover.

The VN is divided into one true route which in the meantime has 3 pretty visible (there are not that many choices in the VN to make, so that's why... Read more »

<report>G-senjou no Maou is one of the most critically acclaimed VN's of the 2010's, and mostly for good reason. The common (true) route is action-packed and dense with mystery, with a fearsome, unpredictable antagonist and a fitting and well-realized soundtrack. The soundtrack is one of my favorite parts of the game, and is made up of playful arrangements of various classical pieces. My 3 favorite classical pieces (Appassionata, Beethoven's 9th Symphony, Clair de Lune) make appearances here and its very well realized and definitely adds to the experience.
The strong points of this VN are centered around the central antagonist; 'Maou' who radiates an aura of mystery much like the protagonist of the... Read more »

<report>Interesting and exciting but somewhat unpolished.

There isn't really much for me to say about this series.

Its overall good. The characters are funny, the story is interesting and the H scenes are exciting and hilarious. G-senjou no maou does a good job of making you want to know what happens next.

The best route in the series which pretty much is unanimous agreement, Is Usami's route or the one true end. Which is pretty obvious they put all the money in that route. Revealing the entire story and all the twists and the ending. These were all enjoyable. Im not denying the were predictable but they had a lot of flair with them. Its fine to do something cliche its just do it in style. Make... Read more »

<report>G-senjou is a good VN that I'd easily recommend to anybody, but it could have been an all-timer if it focused more on what it does well and cut out the rest.

It succeeds at being a thriller, a character-driven cat-and-mouse game with complicated co-protagonists, supporting characters and villains. The main heroine especially is a lot of fun, and I can almost guarantee you've never seen a main character like Kyousuke. It's an exciting, action-packed story told in an unusual way and that alone makes it stand out from the many other VNs that share its genre.

But there are two problems dragging it down for me. The first is when it tries to be a more 'typical' romantic VN with different... Read more »

<report>I finally finished reading G-Senjou No Maou.I'll keep this review spoiler-free. From the start, I want to say that it hurt me to close the door on this story. It's excellent writing and storytelling made me change the way I see life. From all the VN's I've read this one is in my nr.1 spot right now. This masterpiece made me feel things I've never felt before; the characters were simply amazing, the conflicts were heartbreaking, the mystery really kept me on my toes and made me keep wanting more and more.

This story is about love and hate, and how these can change anyone's life. Hate might make you chase a certain person to the ends of the earth just to see it suffer, but love might make... Read more »

<report>For the longest time, when asking for recommendations for a good action VN with some mystery elements to it, the Devil on G-String would often be on top of the list. Seeing recent reviews for the game giving the game less-than-stellar reviews has convinced me that I'm not the only one who thought the game was ultimately mediocre in its offerings.

Our protagonist is Azai Kyousuke, who's supposed be a caricature of the typical unrealistically competent high school student minus the superpowers. He attends high school with his adoptive sister Azai Kanon and serves as sort of the brains for the Azai Group, a yakuza-owned front company under the control of their father Azai Gonzou. His goal... <report>I've played through the main true route of G-Senjou no Maou and enjoyed it greatly but the biggest flaw with this visual novel is the side routes which completely break the plot. Some of the characters were a bit annoying and the sex scenes were cringe worthy, but I haven't seen a single VN without cheesy sex scenes if they had sex scenes in the game. G-Senjou no Maou did a good job of leading the viewer on and then pulling a twist, but sometimes it trips over itself when explaining some of the more complex parts of the plot. The true ending was rather well done, especially the twist with the credits, but there was one part which the main character could of stopped.....you should know what... Read more »
