Description

For my whole life, I never had a girlfriend.
People could laugh at me all they want, but I refused to give up on my ideals when it came to love.
I had always pictured a first encounter where I knew right away she was my destined one.
After several chance run-ins, we would exchange numbers. Then we would hang out together on the weekends.
Only once we've grown close enough would it be time for a real date.
I wouldn't have accepted any love that didn't develop like a storybook romance.
Picking up girls at a club or going on blind dates was out of the question for me.
And so was arranged dates. How could it be romantic when someone else set you up?
I had stood unwavering in my beliefs for my entire life.
Until, that is, when the words of a certain girl turned my view on love inside-out.

<report>A question that I invariably end up asking myself while reading such titles is "what makes a great moege?"

I feel like compared with other literary works that foreground more conventional storytelling elements like profound themes, gut wrenching drama, imaginative scenarios, compelling sekaikan, etc. that are all much easier to analytically discuss and compare, it's remarkably tricky to identify and break-down what makes moege tick, and what it is that separates mediocre from great titles. It might be easy then, to cynically deride the entire genre for being trite and formulaic, to accuse the scenarists of all being talentless hacks that can't write "real" stories. But I feel like that's... Read more »

<report>Darn! I didn't think I would be indulging myself soon to another moege after I just finished one and promised to move on something more story-packed, but the recs and reviews didn't let me sleep. And they were not lying!

The most standing out perk is its adultness. Even though the main character is still quite childish, most of the heroines radiated civilized and more nurtured behavior than your average high school attendee and it made the relationship building more convincing. Throughout the game we have the option to meet 5 different ladies: A calm and more mature one (read: around 30 years), tsundere exclassmate, insecure gamer, poshy influencer and the bane of all ultraromance diving... <report>This visual novel has no right being this good.

Really. I didn't even think that I liked moeges at all, but this one really knocks it out of the park. The characters are *very* well written, the script is genuinely funny (probably the funniest VN I've read in years, actually), and the setting (working adult protagonist and heroines) is surprisingly mature for a lighthearted visual novel.

Probably thanks to most of the characters all being older than most, the story feels a lot closer to a western sitcom than a typical Japanese visual novel. Still funny, still outlandish, but more believably so.

That's not to say that the story is dull or predictable. Quite the opposite. Most routes... Read more »

A refreshing take on romance visual novels. Your character can be named anything you want, adding further immersion to the story. The main character is unemployed, but through each of the routes, most of the time he gets a job which happens to be close to the heroine(s)
It feels different than others in another way, in how you feel towards the heroines. You feel closer to them, and have a lot of (cute) useless conversations.

Girl Ranking: Karen > Saki > Mashiro > Reina > Ako
Route Ranking: Karen > Saki > Mashiro > Reina > Ako

Art: 8/10
Routes: 8/10 (Ako's felt lacking, and left a hole for me)
H-Scenes: 9/10 (I'm not much of a fan of them, but they were cute)
Endings: 10... Read more »

<report>I wanted to pick something up that was relaxing and entertaining as a break from more serious vn's. I expected to get bored pretty early, but I was pleasantly surprised.

For anyone interested in reading this dont expect there to be any very heavy topics or drama. There won't be any deep detailed storyline or plots, that's not what this game was made for. Those themes are light.
Instead you will get a focus of character interaction, light romance, entertainment and comedy. It's basically a romcom, done well enough that someone like me that does not read these often enjoyed a lot.

I would describe the style of this vn as 'down to earth' in its approach. Reading this was such a breath of... Read more »

<report>Making Lovers is a typical vanilla VN, with a moderate amount of drama, but the unusual premise that the protagonist is an (young) adult, as are a few of the heroines. However, the VN still feels like the typical VN with high school age characters because of it's premise about the protagonist (and the heroines) having no prior romantic (or otherwise) relationships of any kind, which is itself due to the VNs genre of being a thoroughly vanilla VN.

There's not much in the way of a common route, so most of the game is heroine-specific, which is why this game is labeled as being of "Medium" length. None of the routes are bad, and drama is infrequent and at a low level. The main tone of the VN... Read more »

<report>tl;dr: A moege focused on somewhat more realistic adult relationships that is fully successful at what it’s trying to do.

Making Lovers is a moege that’s a bit different from the vast majority. For one thing, the protagonist, by default named Kazuma, is an adult currently in between jobs and the heroines are also pursuing various careers. Secondly, the common route is incredibly short but despite that still ends when the protagonist gets into a relationship with one of the heroines. Most contemporary moege have a large build up of relationship development and then a confession scene that results in a relationship. This VN handles things very differently, in that the protagonist and heroine... Read more »

<report>Making Lover,

Romantic in Adulthood life is oddly better than high school life. It's comedic and fun story that I really enjoy it til the end.

The game is about a normal otaku guy that want to find love in adulthood life. After he made his decision to quit from his company work, he discover many opportunities as meeting his old friends, colleagues, new people and more.

I be honest, the game is really a slice of life type, nothing generic happen but more to maturity of making decisions in life and more so. It's heavily explain how pre-adulthood life works and we as human can't really depend on the same routine but try to explore the possibilities without being afraid.

Since this is my... Read more »

<report>Context: I consider reaching any good ending to be sufficient for grading and reviews for VNs that lack a true ending. Those that require multiple endings to fully understand the story are also exceptions. I generally only play routes that I expect to enjoy.

This is the 3rd eroge VN I have played to completion, in this case I chose Karen's route. Following the AsA Project VNs RenKari (7/10) and Suki to Suki (5/10), I decided to try a different studio this time, but one affiliated with AsA (who collaborated on Making Lovers).

Writing

While I have gripes that keep this from the coveted 10/10, this is an overall excellent VN that holds up extremely well. The opening several minutes are... Read more »

<report>Easy 9.5/10. It's really good, even discounting the fact that this is a rare VN with all heroines all have a work and at working age, it's still fundamentally a good VN, only slightly marred by the sub-par little sister route.

I can't believe how rare it is for me find VN with the right type and pacing of intro. I was dubious at first because the menu looks like IxShe Tell which I couldn't really get into because of the common route. After Cafe Stella got me thirsty for college/working-age heroines, this really is the best VN to sate me and leave me even more hungry for it at the same time.

All of the heroines are good too. Well, okay, Ako route was annoying because the hiding... Read more »

<report>Overall I quite enjoyed it! I went in expecting something unique with the slice of life adult age romance stories and got that in spades. I guess SMEE likes their structure since every route had the same amount of chapters but didnt mind.

Kazuma was a fun protag. Felt like the Fureraba protag but a little sillier. The humor was consistently quite good in every route. Having voiced good side characters helped. I guess the romance was predictable and slightly shallow but it worked for the most part. Fun music.

Saki's route/character was nice and chill. Perfect for a first route. Having a character close to my IRL age helped. Kazuma felt most openly degnerate but Saki kept him in line. Felt... Read more »

<report>Making * Lovers is one of the more beloved and popular romcom VNs and it's easy to see why. First of all, it's refreshing to have an adult cast/setting. Meaning you drink at a bar together, get drunk, look for apartments, move in together, talk about marriage and children, workplace shenanigans among other things. It's refreshing to not have the usual teenage cast+school setting. M*L gives you relatable and genuinely funny gags as the characters navigate adult life together.

M*L has five different routes after a very brief common route. The short common route means that you hardly even meet the other girls once you're locked to a route. This is actually nice, since it means that it's not... Read more »
