Description

World End Syndrome follows the story of a 17-year-old high school junior trying to escape his troubled past. After causing an accident resulting in his older sister’s death, he receives an invitation to transfer to Mihate High School. He takes it gratefully, hoping to start a new life and forget his past.

But Mihate Town is not the coastal paradise it appears to be. It is home to the legend of the Yomibito, where the dead come back to life every 100 years. Once resurrected, the Yomibito attack the living to regain their sanity, but the dead’s thirst is never quenched. This year happens to be 100 years since the last known incident…

As the protagonist navigates his new life with a colorful cast of new friends, a student at Mihate High suddenly dies. The murder sends shockwaves through the idyllic town as he finds himself caught in a string of strange incidents, romance, and unforgettable summer experiences…

<report>It feels like I played a press copy of a game that was canceled late into development. There's a lot of fun ideas, but - outside of the art - it seems like they had ZERO time to cook.

The way there's two opposing genres of fiction - slice of life and murder mystery - but they're not integrated at all; it just changes genres about 3/4ths of the way through.

The way there's an affection meter, but its only practical use is to unlock one route.

The way the music is so sparse that it feels like a placeholder for the final score.

The way the translation has just enough issues that it feels uncanny.

The way that it's hard to start any routes without a lot of trial and error.

It's hard to recommend World End Syndrome. But, honestly? I had fun, and I'd play a sequel if one is ever released.

<report>Well designed game with some cool sprites and animations, the game has a model of gameplay where you choose where your character goes each day during morning, afternoon and night , sadly most secondary scenes aren't that great and are not voiced, the game has a premise of a mystery/suspense novel but it executes poorly most suspense scenes. Most endings have the same pattern as they end with The protagonist going to summer festival with girl X, being assaulted by some "unknown people" , credits, and post credit scene , the game still has some funny scenes and some good romance scenes, the good part of the game was the true route and some specific scenes from some endings, but sadly they were just short parts .
6.5/10 Almost good

<report>First things first, I hate this style of Visual Novel. Rather than being a sequence of scenes, the scenes are split up into a few different locations, and there's 3~ time periods (morning, afternoon, night) per day. Almost all of the significant, story-pivotal scenes are restricted to 1 location, at 1 time of day, on 1 day. That means getting the right scenes to progress the plot/character route is a guess.

That sucks.

Second, this entire plot relies on the main character not only being an unreliable narrator, but essentially lying to the reader. In fact, after getting the true ending, it's pretty obvious the writer didn't care about the gaping holes in the story.

The first unreliable... Read more »

<report>World End Syndrome is a VN that I have seen a few reviews on, mostly on Youtube. It sounded interesting and the visuals look nice, so I eventually bought it.

Story
At times, I was a bit underwhelmed by the story. Given how some scenes had a creepy mood in the common route, I was expecting more of that in the heroines' routes. While I did have moments where I was tense and my heart was even beating faster at one point, those moments were far from each other. Regardless of that, the story was still good overall. There were so many twists that blew my mind and the story has good pacing. There were very few moments where I felt it could've been used for more story elements. However, those are... Read more »

<report>Painfully decent - scratch that, painfully passable.

Way too many choices, I'm just trying to click through the story and it's jamming annoying fucking choices in my face like every five minutes. The other thing that sucks is that instead of it being one long story it's one story basically retold with changes to it based on the route you take.

Unfortunately, most of the routes suck playing. 2 of the 5 girls are unenjoyable as one is your literal fucking cousin and the other one is way older and turns out to be your SISTER. And another one of the girls is some ugly short rich girl. Barf. And most of the routes are just skipping scenes you already played through with a few different... Read more »

<report>I'm impressed! I don't know if it's because my expectations were so low or not.

I was expecting an OK, but fun dating sim with a supernatural mystery as fluffy window dressing. And yes, a good chunk of the game is that. But I didn't expect it to be done so well!

The dating sim romances are light and comfy, with great heroines.

The mystery is laid out amazingly. The twists and reveals, expertly placed. The supernatural element actually mattered to the mystery and emotional beats. The Agatha Christie-esque monologues were delightful.

The use of the dating sim format to layer in more clues and mess with expectations without totally breaking formula like another recently famous dating... Read more »
