Teru is a third-year and the leader of Shiraitodai High School. Teru is Saki Miyanaga's older sister, who went to live with her mother when their parents separated. She has since become a powerful mahjong player, sometimes displaying fearsome powers until the fact that people began classify her as the strongest among all monster players. She used to play with Saki and the rest of the family when they were younger. Saki dreams of progressing to the nationals and finally reuniting with her, but Teru lies to teammates and reporters alike about not having a sister. It is still unknown as to why she is mad at Saki. Teru won the last national individual tournament, Shiraitodai won the past two national team tournaments, and they aim to repeat both wins this year.
Teru is dispassionate and almost emotionless when she is with her teammates but smiles widely during a press conference, a smile that Sumire realizes is fake. Teru harbors anger towards Saki for unknown reasons. When she used to live with Saki, she was the typical cool older sister - encouraging Saki to bloom like flowers on a mountain. Even though she is somewhat cold, she has shown care to her opponent like the time when she's worried about Toki Onjouji after she is being sent to hospital.

In the first hand of games, Teru almost never wins as she surveys her opponents with her mirror ability. With this she is able to see her opponents' innate abilities and habits. This makes her very astute, and allows her to easily counter her opponents. After using her mirror, she begins her reign. When she wins one hand, her next hand will be stronger than the last. However, she must win with a higher value in order to keep her ability active (this includes renchan bonuses but Teru doesn't rely on that; it is likely riichi bets do not count), this may delay the completion of her hand as she begins making more difficult yaku. Her winning with a lower value hand than her last one, anyone else winning, and exhaustive draws will break her streak, causing her to start again from the bottom. He beginning hands start out regularly, but her draws make her hands come together strongly and quickly. The momentum of her wins build up on her right arm, appearing as a small tornado.

Sumire is a third-year at Shiraitodai High and president of the mahjong club. She is a friend of Teru and the only person known to Teru who seems to have had prior knowledge of Saki's existence. Like her nickname "Sharpshooter", she is calm and polite to her friends and opponents. She never rushes to make her decision and always calmly thinks about it throughly. Sumire shown worry about Teru Miyanaga's behaviour regarding her little sister, Saki, although Teru never wants to pursue the subject.

Sumire's ability is called "Piercing arrow shots." It allows her to get a direct hit on a player of her choice by changing her hand to target a certain discard. It targets what would be the best offensive play, and can be dodged by making defensive or plain bad play. Unfortunately, the ability can be found out easily: when she's about to use it, Sumire's hand moves a bit and she looks at the player she is aiming at. However, the hand movement is so slight (only moving a few millimetres back) that even her own teammates don't know about it.

Kuro is a second-year at Achiga Girls' Academy and one of Nodoka's childhood friends. Kuro was the children's mahjong club's number one player before it was disbanded. Afterwards, she kept the room clean for two years in hopes for that someone would show up and they could have fun together like they used to. She is the younger sister of Yuu Matsumi.

Kuro is a polite, cheerful, and has shown on several occasions to have a fascination with breasts. She also seems to be very optimistic, as she waited for two years for someone to restart the mahjong club. She has a very good relationship with her older sister. Kuro has described herself as the waiting type. However, it is hinted that she is also a little oblivious.

Kuro's main ability is to draw every single applicable dora: regular dora, kan dora, and red dora all gather into Kuro's hand. This comes from the fact that her mother told her to cherish her dora, which led to her keeping them in her hand, and subsequently began collecting them more frequently. More often than not, her starting hands do not contain that many dora, and throughout the course of the hand she will draw them, slowing her hand progression but also coming together consistently. This also means that her opponents cannot use the dora tiles to increase the power of their hands. However, her dora magnet ability has a drawback: if she discards a single dora tile, she will be unable to draw any dora for a set amount of hands. This drawback is a defining feature of Kuro's playing-style; she draws many dora tiles and refuses to discard them, leading her to break tenpai in order to keep dora.

Saki is a first-year student and is the titular character of the story. When originally discovered by Kiyosumi's club, she was notorious for her ability to finish plus/minus 0, essentially finishing with the same score she started with (+/- 400 points). When Saki was little, she played mahjong with her family. If she lost, she would lose her allowance, so she learnt how to not lose; if she won too much, her parents get angry, so she learnt how to not win too much. Through this, she developed a dislike of mahjong, seeing it as only a formality for her family to get angry with her.

Her main ability is rinshan kaihou, or winning off of a tile taken from the dead wall after calling kan. It can even go to the extend that she can call multiple kans off of the dead well en route to the win. Outside of using her abilities, her gameplay tends to be rather quiet. However, she appears to get a handle on the flow of any particular game, thus allowing her to make use of her ability.

Saki is a shy, bookish girl with a poor sense of direction. At first, despite her skills, she doesn't like mahjong, in particular because of her family. She is very caring about her friends' feelings, as seen when she loses on purpose to Yuuki to make her feel better and stops doing so because Nodoka says that she cannot have fun if Saki is holding back. Saki gets very excited when thinking about playing against strong competition.

Saki also has the ability to recognize the tiles that can form a kan. She could also feel the fourth tile in the wall one or two turns in advance; when she does this, her eyes wander over to the wall, looking at the tile she can use to form a kan with.

Toki is a third-year at Senriyama Girls' High School. Her closest friend and caretaker is Ryuuka Shimizudani. She used to be on the school's third team but after her hospitalization, her ranking increased. Toki is physically weak, she is constantly being cared for by Ryuuka. Though she cares for Ryuuka and other members, she doesn't want to become a burden to them as she is always being hospitalized.

Toki has the ability to see one turn into the future, which she says she received after first being hospitalized. This allows her to consistently get an ippatsu after declaring riichi, which other players are shown to be aware of. She also has the ability to see two, and even three turns into the future. When Toki first tried to see two turns into the future, she fainted, resulting in Ryuuka making Toki promise never to try it again, but she practiced it in secret and until she could do it without fainting, although it still takes a severe toll on her health.

Awai is a first-year at Shiraitodai High School. She is recognized as a successor of Teru Miyanaga and one of the monster-class first-years that could beat even veteran third-years along with Saki Miyanaga. She was able to climb into the regulars' team just in a month. Due to her skills and abilities, Awai is considerably confident, cocky, and arrogant, but is shown to be the most talkative and cheerful out of her Shiraitodai teammates. She seems fairly close to Teru and is pretty attached to her, calling her by her first name without any honorifics, which is somewhat unusual outside of close friends.

Awai has two abilities, a passive one and an offensive one. Her passive ability is called "Absolute Safety Zone" - this makes her opponents start off with hands that have a low probability of completion, normally hands with 5-6 shanten. The following draws are normal, however. This ability can only be beaten by abilities that manipulate a player's own starting hand. Her second ability is also her most offensive and dangerous one. With this ability, she can declare a double-riichi but her hand has no other yaku in it. Also, just before reaching the last corner in the wall, she will declare a concealed kan and will almost always win immediately after rounding the corner. Should she win with this ability, it will be revealed that the kan she made will be comprised of at least four kan doras radically increasing her score. With this ability she also seems to be able to get a direct-hit on one of her opponent's.

Shizuno is a first-year at Achiga Girls' Academy and the main protagonist of the side-A story. In sixth grade, she met Nodoka and together they play mahjong in the school's childrens mahjong club. She was the club's third best player. When seeing Nodoka's success after she transfered, she makes going to the nationals and playing against Nodoka her goal.

Shizuno is an energetic, athletic girl, and is excited about almost all things. She enjoys hanging out with her friends whenever possible and tries to have as much fun as she can. She become a worthy opponent due to her atittude of never giving up until the very end. When the team falls into despair or is not motivated, she will always step up and cheer them on.

Shizuno seemed to be a typical player with an unwavering determination to win. Even in impossible situations, Shizuno doesn't give up, and is able to count points and account for the other player's habits to calculate her path to victory. However, Shizuno also has the ability to weaken or negate other players' ability, which grows stronger the further the round goes into mountain - the Japanese name for the walls of mahjong tiles. Shizuno also seems to have the ability to nullify player's abilities outside of how long the round has gone on, as towards the end of her match with Oohoshi, Oohoshi started being unable to declare double riichi, despite the fact that declaring double riichi specifically happens at the beginning of the round; in addition to nullifying Awai's double riichi, she also nullified Awai's 5-tiles-from-tenpai starting hands.

Ako is a first-year at Achiga Girls' School and an elementary school friend of Shizuno and Nodoka, but went to a different middle school (Bansei) so she could play mahjong. She was the club's second best player before it was disbanded. When Shizuno re-established the club, she decided to return to the school.

Ako is much like Shizuno in that she is cheerful but more logical compared to Shizuno. She also wants to hang out with her friends as much as possible and have fun playing mahjong with them like the last time. According to Harue Akado, Ako is a cunning individual.

Ako's specialty is recognizing when calling tiles will help her complete her hand faster. She often does this when she has the opportunity to form an open yaku, very frequently getting either sanshoku doujun or ikkitsuukan and increasing the value of her hands with other easy han such as tanyao or dora. This makes her a faster player than other players who wait for more expensive hands. She also has a beautiful grasp of flow, and has even said that "nobody can beat her at high speeds".

Nodoka is a first-year student at Kiyosumi High School in Nagano Prefecture and a protagonist of the manga. She has played online mahjong since a young girl and develops a eventually passion for it. Her father, who works as an attorney, disapproves of Nodoka's interest but does not prohibit it. Because of her mother's work assignment, her family usually moves to a different city every two to three years. She moves to Nara Prefecture prior to her final year in elementary school and soon enters Achiga Girls' Academy for middle school. She was the previous year's National Middle School Individual Champion.

Nodoka always carries her penguin plushie due to Hisa's recommendation in their first training camp, affectionately named Etopen, to give her a sense of calmness when playing mahjong.

Nodoka plays a strictly digital style game and not does she only think about winning percentages, she factors in expected values for her winning hands as well. Nodoka's true strength in mahjong lies within her online persona. Using the pseudonym "Nodocchi", her winning record surpasses that of most professional players. Her opponents have observed that she makes makes the most complex decisions within a split second and rarely makes mistakes in her plays, if ever. While holding Etopen, she can go into "Nodocchi Mode" even outside digital Mahjong, but this is also her weakness: she views the current game as a digital game, regardless of whether or not it actually is; this allows her to completely ignore the presence of her opponents, for better or worse. She begins making decisions very quickly and can confuse players who sense their opponent's tenpai, as she seems to play like a robot, not a person.

Nodoka's personality is that of a "proper lady" as noted by Mako. She is very logical but can be a bit childish as she cannot sleep without her penguin plushie. She is distant with Saki at first but over time becomes extremely close to her. Nodoka is also very stubborn and despite being logical rushes into things without thinking. She is sensitive when talking about her breasts with others. Nodoka also has a pragmatic view of mahjong: she does not believe in supernatural powers and stubbornly rejects any chance of them happening.

Yuu is a third-year at Achiga Girls' Academy and the older sister of Kuro. When she was younger she wanted to join with the others in the children's mahjong club but she felt it would be awkward because she was older. She is very sensitive to the cold, so she covers herself head to toe when she goes anywhere. Yuu is polite, shy, and a bit of a push-over. However, she can be determined at times, refusing to buckle even when faced with unfavorable situations, and being determined to win back any points her sister lost. She also has a strong relationship with her sister.

Yuu's ability is that she can draw alot of manzu and chun (red) tiles, so her hand is manly composed of these tiles. She also draws these tiles because she feels warmer drawing in warm tiles. As a result, her tile possession distribution is generally skewed toward the character tiles. When that playing style fails, Yuu draws in all red tiles and becomes difficult to defend against.

Arata is a a second-year at Achiga Girls' Academy and the last member to join the club. She is a huge fan of Harue Akado: when she was little she used to play mahjong with the Matsumi sisters but stopped playing all together when Harue quit and joined Achiga's mahjong club (though she claimed she was only there as a filler member) after hearing Harue had started playing mahjong again.

She has a cool type personality and has a strong admiration of Harue Akado. Though at first she stops playing mahjong because of Akado's loss in the semi-final match of the national tournament and quit the team afterwards on. But later she starts playing again when Harue becomes the coach of the Achiga team. According to Harue, she is a reliable person, so much so that she is named president of the newly reformed mahjong club.

Arata prefers pinzu waits and they resemble what might be left after the first roll in bowling. For example, similar to a bowling move called The Greek Church or Big Five her hand includes 5-5-5-6-7-8-9 pin the wait being on the 4,6,7,9 pin (as there is no 10 in mahjong). She also gets a wait that is similar to what's called a washout, her hand includes the 2-3-3-3 pin with the wait being on the 1, 2, and 4 pin. However, any bowling formation that has a name to it (such as dime store or Cincinnati) she can make a wait with.

Ryuuka is a third-year at Senriyama Girls' High School. She is the best friend and caretaker to Toki Onjouji. Ryuuka is a cheerful type girl and is pretty close to Toki. She always takes care of Toki like a mother and constantly watches over her so that she does not push herself too hard. Since meeting Achiga she seems to have grown fond of them as well to the minutes that she does not know to root for her team or Achiga.

It is noted that on a per-game basis, Ryuuka has the highest point gain average in her region. This is due to her precise play and highly accurate predictions. In the semifinals, Ryuuka discovered that she has the ability to connect with Toki, in a fashion possibly somewhat similar to Shindouji's Shirouzu and Tsuruta. Connecting with Toki gives her the ability to see the final composition of the hand she is to win with, as well as the order of discards she requires to achieve this.
