Description

Arkham city is a bustling hub of commerce and industry, however Arkham is also a center of eldrich lore: home to Miskatonic University, an institution of higher learning with one of the most complete libraries of arcane literature in the world. In the span of two generations the town was built up to the status of prestige it now commands, an expansion helmed by the Hadou Group, an industrial complex and family dynasty currently run by the young Hadou Ruri. She pursues the peace and prosperity of Arkham diligently, against the forces of darkness threatening to plunge the city, and the world, back into a second dark age. Among the most sinister threats to Arkham City is the evil Black Lodge syndicate. Led by the charismatic Master Therion, his nihilistic outlook shapes the group's destructive goals: with a circle of powerful sorcerers at his command, the potential for sowing chaos in the city is unmatched.

Former Miskatonic University Magic Academy student Daijuuji Kurou knows little of grimoires, but what he does know terrifies him - enough that he left his university life behind, and now practices a failing detective business in the shelter of an orphanage in a quiet corner of Arkham. But just when he thought his Academy past was buried, it catches up with him and pulls him back into the dark shadows of the occult: Hadou Ruri herself appears at his door with an offer he can't refuse. The only way to combat the Black Lodge's growing magical power is to find, and retrieve, a grimoire with the power to activate the mightiest Machina of all: Demonbane. The quest to find this forbidden tome will change Kurou's destiny... forever.

<report>I'm a long time consumer of many mediums and for a long time the action genre had basically been dead for me, fights simply did not excite me anymore and be it adventure or whathever simply bored me to death, getting attached to characters was something long benign to me, and I was mostly consuming most media apathetically.
Then came Demonbane, I had just finished reading most of Lovecraft's works and had an interest cause of the infamy of EDG, so I thought, I'll go and read it, it seems to be the opportune moment.

And what can I say? By the start of november I was that man, trying to find that fire of excitement long forgotten, no expectations.
And by the end of november, Zanmataisei Demonbane had single-handedly revived my love for action, mecha, comedy and romance in a single go.

<report>Demonbane feels like an edgy and cheesy saturday morning cartoon from the 80s. It's a very formulaic battle shounen, and don't let the mecha/Lovecraftian veneer tell you otherwise - same shit; different smell. If you turn your brain off, Demonbane can be quite a bit of dumb fun. However, when viewed critically, it is simply not good. You can definitely see traces of Nitroplus' later self in this game, and it probably sowed the seed for great games like Muramasa and Tokyo Necro. That doesn't hide the fact that it's hopelessly outdated and outclassed by almost all of Nitroplus' more recent catalogue. Even when you don't compare it to it's descendants, it still has to face its contemporaries... Read more »

<report>Demonbane is perhaps one of Nitroplus' most classic visual novels. It's the chuuni combination of super robot shows like Mazinger Z with the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

The plot has a bit of a slow start. It has a monster of the week formula, with Kou and Al having to face off against a different enemy, gaining a new ability in the process. There's even something like a beach episode that's a reference to The Shadow Over Innsmouth. This section of the story is mostly fun and lighthearted, but it does feel rather mundane compared to the insanity that is the rest of the novel. It's all necessary setup, for the second half is where the story really shines. The stakes get a lot higher while the... Read more »

<report>(This review has been originally published in July 2011)

At long last! The time has come to review "Duke Nukem Forever"! I will fire up this game that has been so damn long in the making and proceed to kick alien ass, while basking in the masculine glory of Duke himself. Even the fact that I don't even have the fucking game won't stop me, as I have the next best thing - "Deus Machina Demonbane" - a visual novel that has been stuck so long in the publishing hell, that some people even lost hope to ever see it in English. Contrary to the detractors, the game was released (well, about three years late, but that's not the point; is it?).

When the great master H. P. Lovecraft penned his... Read more »

<report>I remember the days of 2021 vntwt, those innocent days when MLA and Fata were the best thing ever, "peak fiction", "top 1" and "prose" meant anything, and what seemed like the eternal search for the greatest medium of all time was finally over after years and years of anime burnout. Needless to say, we were lied to, manipulated by the ghost of social acceptance we chose a select few visual novels and placed them on golden pedestals, "these are the greatest fictional works ever" they said, and we believed it! Little did we know, those autophobic rats would delude themselves into putting absolutely anything in their 3x3 as long as it made them appear smart, or at least smart to their peers... Read more »

<report>Where to begin with this one.

It's a Lovecraftian tale of giant mechs, cartoonishly villainous mad scientists, and eldritch abominations. A tale where the Necronomicon, infamous grimoire written by the Mad Arab, Abdul Alhazred ... is a magical girl waifu who sleeps on a shoggoth-turned-waterbed and falls in love with the protagonist. It's utter silliness and shouldn't work on paper.

The thing is, it actually does.

Demonbane is the story of private investigator Daijuuji Kurou, a 3rd rate detective who can't get a case and mooches meals from the kindly sister at the local orphanage. Just as his utilities are shut off, he's approached by Hadou Ruri, the president of the most powerful... Read more »
