Description

Two gates were inadvertently opened at an archaeological site in an extraordinary turn of events. These doorways, leading to the mystical realms of gods and demons, bridged the human world with realities they had never perceived. The manifestation of magic and supernatural beings provoked astonishment and fascination among humans, who had only known a world devoid of such elements.

Yet, despite the initial shock, these three distinct worlds found a way to intermingle. Cultural exchanges took place, and gradually, a harmonious coexistence was forged. A decade has passed since these meaningful changes, and this unique integration has become the new normal.

Set against this vibrant backdrop is Koyo Town, home to Tsuchimi Rin, an average human student at Verbena Academy. Rin's quiet life, however, is on the cusp of drastic change. His town is recently becoming home to the families of the "God King" and the "Devil King" - each having a daughter who, for years, has nurtured feelings for Rin.

Their affection stems from a fleeting encounter in their younger years, an impactful experience that they held onto those feelings, cherishing them with unwavering steadfastness.

With the entry of these princesses from the divine and demon realms into Rin's life, a whirlwind of events gets triggered, introducing upheaval, despair, and a glimmer of hope into Rin's otherwise ordinary existence.

And then... the students at the school, both envious and sarcastic, label Rin as "the man who can become a god, devil, or remain a mere mortal."

<report>Shuffle strongly reminds me of early 2000s harem anime. Its characters are likeable, but are sorely misused due to their only concern and motivation being the protagonist's dick. Each route has some existential drama mixed in, which reminds me of the likes of Da Capo or Air, but it isn't executed nearly as well as those two. The soundtrack grew on me a lot, but the dated art unfortunately did not, which is a shame, because I usually like the aesthetic of older VNs.
Pros:
Side characters are funny, namely the two dads
Asa and Primula's routes are good in the context of Kaede and Nerine's routes
Some songs on the soundtrack go really hard
Cons:
Harem goes beyond corny into obnoxious territory (despite no harem ending)
Worldbuilding culminates in forgettable drama
MC is dumb and lazy

<report>SHUFFLE! sets itself up as a unique experience by creating a fantastical world that’s chock full of stuff that can make its story a lot more interesting. Sadly, due to underutilized story elements and a short runtime, it falls short of actually doing that. Instead, it settles as a slice-of-life romance visual novel with a few supernatural elements. This mismatch between its premise and what it ended up becoming bleeds into the routes as well, making most of them feel a little bit inconsequential in their gravity.

<report>Love Shuffle! Love it.

My roommate brought this home on his Playstation 2 and we never got it to work because it needed a chip we couldn't get to work to allow his PS2 to play Japanese games. Since I inherited his PS2 copy after he moved out and abandoned it I own more copies of this game than any other I've ever played. I own in in English I own it in English from Managagamer (link dead) I own it in Japanese and I own it in Japanese.

I don't think there's very many people who hold such a high opinion of this but I have always loved it. I love the art by Aoi Nishimata, I love the voice of Yuuko Goto as Fuyou Kaede I love all the girls, there's very little drama but there is some.

I'm in... Read more »

<report>Shuffle is a passable, if uninspiring, VN. Because of its age (writing this in the year 2021), its UI looks dated, but is at least functional. I would consider the backgrounds to be it's strength artistically, while the character designs are just "ok". Story is where this VN kinda falls flat, despite the fantasy flair. It's a shorter VN, with much longer common route/scenes than girl specific ones. The common route really drags in spots, while the girl specific routes seem to be over in the blink of an eye. I honestly didn't like any of the girls' routes all that much, and the contrived drama for each was fairly unappealing, with any and all H-art sprinkled in falling well short of making... Read more »
