Description

Every visual novel under the sun has you assume the role of an average guy meeting beautiful anime girls who magically fall for him after a few clicks. In Class of '09 you play the anime girl and verbally destroy any guy in your path.

Set from 2007 to 2009, relive the late 2000's with a twist! Experience the high school life pre social media and cancel culture, make all sadistic choices you always wanted to towards painfully accurate depictions of all the personalities encountered in any American high school.

<report>I feel like this is marketed almost like a comedy game...but it's not funny. Not because the dialogue isn't sharp or quippy, or lacking in periodically-appropriate references.

No, it's not funny because the game's main character, Nicole, is just so sad. The main character's life is so fucked up that it's not hard to see why she's so jaded and cynical towards everyone and everything. But, at the same time, she has no redeeming qualities. Because her life sucked, she believes no one deserves happiness or respect. Her sense of entitlement makes it virtually impossible to empathize with her.

I won't be submitting a review for "Class of 09: The Re-up", a semi-sequel to this game; but, it's more of the same, just with Nicole's best friend Jecka being more of a voice of reason this time around.

<report>This isn't my usual type of game, and since you're reading this on VNDB and not Steam, it isn't yours either. But while I started it just for lols, I actually had a decent time.

What started out as an edgy plot quickly became fun when you, the hottest piece of ass in school, have the power to get literally anyone to do anything.

What makes this VN different is seeing just how far you can take things, like turning the entire school into a white nationalist cult, or getting the jock guy to commit suicide for you. Shallow/edgy plot? Sure... But I'd be lying if I said I wasn't amused seeing just how crazy things can get.

Nicole's black comedy was well done, she had many one-liners that gave me a good chuckle, and I almost never audibly laugh.

Ah, how I miss the 2000s...

<report>When I see such statements as "the anti-visual novel" and so forth, I instantly start cackling. Just how much more am I going to eat this? It's sad to find that lots of amateurish games - as in visual novels - try to become some kind of deconstruction of date-sims, when they do not have any actual relation to them. And basically, these works are claimed as deconstruction by people, who didn't play any genuine date-sims even once. Or maybe they did it only once. Hopefully, a hollow deconstruction was not a purpose here.

Well, a couple of words for the game itself: it's bad. The kind of awfulness that's still fun to play through despite all its thrash. Good to spend some time on edgy stupid jokes and ACTUALLY nice voice acting (as quirky it may be). There's really nothing more to say.

<report>played this back to back with the 'sequel'. mostly the same but with more of a 'moralistic' tone. both darker and less nihilistic. I think the biggest flaw with this one over it's sequel is that the sequel actually makes Nicole, the protagonist, feel real. here's she's just kinda someone who does the things you choose ? the branching paths are more disjointed too.

femcels over incels ? interesting take.

<report>This one was a hard one for me to rate. On one hand, the dialogue is quick and snappy and crudely funny, and it really reminds me of Mean Girls meets The Boondocks, two very different works but works I still enjoy very much, and this marriage of the two isn't a bad combo.

The issue is that there are moments where this VN comes close to saying *something* but just falls flat, which is fine--not every piece of media needs to catch the world on fire or say something to be enjoyable--but the fact that this game comes so close to it without actually sticking the landing makes me feel like it was intended to try and have some sort of commentary. Still, for the low asking price, I'd say its worth it for the humor based on 2000s high school tropes alone.

<report>One of my biggest surprises when playing a visual novel

Both for the premise and for the kind of humor, wich I was completely NOT expecting to be as good as it was (it reminded me of movies like Superbad, American Pie, etc, wich I absolutely love)
The situations wich you can get yourself into are quite surprising, and the story was really good too in my opinion (in some moments I felt genuine sadness or happiness for what happened)

Definetively a big fresh air in the ocean of visual novels for me. I'm really looking forward to another project of SNB3 (the only problem is that this game is short, but I think its the perfect length)

<report>Loosely-collected thoughts from my Discord convo:

I can say so far it is pretty funny, some really clever stuff here and there
the problem though is that it's always trying to be funny
it always has to maintain its vibe so every second line feels like a joke
but it's only ever really witty for a percentage of the time
not necessarily a small percentage of the time, but it feels like whenever there's a good hit, there's like ten misses just because every line is written like a punchline
i do appreciate some of its heart though, and i do like how a lot of the core conflict in the show is just women trying to look out for each other cuz everything is out to screw with them
but that's still a... Read more »

<report>Probably one of the worst visual novels to date honestly, only semi-redeemable thing is the voice acting but every thing else is honestly abyss fiction.

Tries to be funny with humor that could maybe appeal to edgy 12 year olds. The advertisement is honestly insultingly bad. Advertises it as the "Anti Visual Novel" but its made by a guy who clearly knows nothing about the medium and only bases it off of the most generic dating sim stereotypes, sound familiar??
about it.

The author also literally insults actual VNs with decent stories and actually competent writing as well.
The story is basically non existent just about some girls who reject guys because "ooh such a unique concept that... Read more »
