<report>tl;dr: A solid remake of a title that has a pretty good story and great atmosphere, though somewhat weak game play.

Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen is a remake of the original Utawarerumono released way back in 2002. A sequel to the first game was released in 2015 with a sequel to that in 2016. This remake of the first was then released in 2018. The company, Aquaplus, that released Utawarerumono way back then was a very different company than they are now. For one, they used to be a PC centered eroge developer and are now a more console oriented game developer. Thus, to a degree it was pretty strange that they released a sequel to one of their eroge 13 years later, though it also had... Read more »

<report>Utawarerumono is an amazing story that cannot be described in few words. Its world-building is second to none, easily compared to the greats like Higurashi or Umineko.

The story of an amnesiac woken up in a weird world, in the backwoods of a village near the mountains with heavy injuries, no memory, and a mask he cannot remove. After being nursed back to health, he starts to view the village as his new home. But when an oppressive ruler threatens the peaceful life of the village and his newfound friends and family, they find themselves hurtled towards war, chaos, and a destiny far greater than any of them imagined.

All characters are genuinely beautiful - they are all unique, colorful... Read more »

<report>I also gave SubaHibi a 5/10, but this gets a 5/10 for different reasons.
SubaHibi had some great peaks but such terrible, extended lows that I had to drop it.
Utawarerumono just has no highs period. The parts that try to be highs are so cringey. And it's not "HURR TOO ANIMEY BRO", no I love manga and anime. It's just bad and lazy writing-wise.
We spend like 10battles on these tiny nations and then only 2 battles per huge nation. Did they just run out of resources?
We introduce some big bad seeming guy only for him to get killed by the next big bad in 1 hour and then suddenly there are gods everywhere.
The big reveals are so ridiculous. There's basically no monologue/narration which makes... Read more »

<report>Utawarerumono is a “God game” in the Western sense of the term. You guide a village of Ainu inspired kemonomimi along the steps of human civilizations. You teach them to feed themselves with agriculture, defend themselves from the local wildlife, build an empire, and challenge the gods. In a story ripe with twists and genre shifts, the greatest one is that you do not realize that you are playing a God game until the end is reached and you are left to ponder what remains. This is possible because the story is deeply personal, obscuring the epic nature of the events that unfold.

Our protagonist awakes next to Eruruu, a girl with animal ears and a tail. He has no memories. While he himself... Read more »

<report>Utawarerumono-- wow, that's a mouthful! And an even fuller mouthful is the degree of content which went into this work. The story features a wide variety of situations sweeping across a full spectrum of emotions-- domestic violence, caring for the sick; camaraderie, rivalship; the depths of poverty, the pinnacle of imperial splendor and divinity.

At the foreground of this tale is a man who presents himself to others as a helpful leader and family man, but who, throughout the story, reveals himself to be a cunning sociopath. Here are some of the harms Hakuowlo has inflicted

- He protected Eruruu from Nuwangi, but in doing so, condemned Yamamura Village to death after conquering the local... Read more »

<report>A not so in-depth nor objective normie review from an average chinaman in your neighborhood
Engrish is not my first language so please be easy on me

Everyday when I was disappointed and jaded by the harsh concrete reality happening in this possibly cursed land, there was a need for some simple, unpretentious, and honest escapism fun produced by modern days Japan to ease my cynical heart a little bit. To me, Utawarerumono is a genre like this. It's the game you would possibly hear of as a Jap cartoon consumer before, especially when you grew up with the Chinese weaboo community. It's a game I constantly heard about others bragging about how good or great it is, but other than that never... Read more »
