Description

Subarashiki Hibi is a story told in seven chapters. The story follows a group of several Tokyo high school students mostly through July of 2012 and each chapter is told from the perspective of one of its five main characters. Because of the same timeframe coverage, certain events are overlapping from chapter to chapter but at the core of it all is a mystery revolving around the prophecy about the end of the world on July the 20th as well as the events that are following before the said date. The first part of the VN is used to make a setting for the said mysteries while the second part is about uncovering the truth behind them all.

The story begins in chapter #1, 'Down the Rabbit-Hole I" on July 12, 2012. The protagonist, Minakami Yuki, lives a peaceful everyday life with Tsukasa and Kagami, her childhood friends, when one day she meets a mysterious girl, Takashima Zakuro (a girl in another class in Yuki's school, who seems to have met Yuki before but Yuki doesn't remember her). The strange schoolmate Yuki just befriended moves into her house (Yuki doesn't mind too much about that). Then following this new guest in Minakami's residence, Yuki's two childhood friends mentioned earlier also move in, just so that they don't feel left out. These events are just a prelude for what will ultimately lead Yuki to discover her own "Wonderful Everyday" during this chapter.

In chapter #2, "Down the Rabbit-Hole II", the story still follows Minakami Yuki in the same timeline as before albeit with a different set of events and their outcomes. This time, Yuki learns that Takashima Zakuro has killed herself. Rumours in school are abuzz about predictions of the end of the world in 2012 - one of which is a Web site called the "Web Bot Project", a network of crawlers designed to harness the 'collective unconsciousness' to make predictions. A boy in Yuki's class named Mamiya Takuji stands up and makes an apocalyptic prediction, stating that the world will end on the 20th, that Zakuro's death was the first sign. He speaks of an event he dubs "the End Sky", where the world will be destroyed and reborn. The clock is ticking and more people die as the prophesied date draws closer and closer while Yuki attempts to get to the bottom of the identity of Mamiya Takuji, the Web Bot Project and the End Sky.

<report>You might be like me and have heard a lot about this. People say "go in blind because that's the best way."

I strongly disagree. There are many untagged DARK rape, father-daughter adult rape incest, brother-loli sister consentual incest, other sexual abuse scenes. The middle section is incredibly repetitive (to the point that I was almost skimming, which I have never done before).

I also didn't find the payoff for the length of the VN and its content to be worthwhile. It was detached from 70% of the VN and didn't really answer some of the more important questions (important to me anyway). That was probably intentional, but doesn't mean I need to like it.

There are elements to like. To me, they were just overshadowed by the greater volume of content I didn't like.

<report>What seems like your average story of a bunch of students hanging out and attending school at first turns into a very weird and peculiar story. You will be shifting through different protagonists, seeing their perspectives of events and what actions they have taken to lead the story in that sort of direction. Pay close attention to details and have a good memory to unravel what's really going on.

Really love how everything came together and had one of the most touching romance to me that I actually felt very touched on their H-scene more than being turned on. Each protagonist had their own themes and atmosphere that each chapter feels pretty distinct. A bit of warning though that the VN will touch on some pretty dark subjects so if you want a relaxing kind of VN better look elsewhere.

<report>Love the characters, the literary aesthetic, and a lot of the vibes emanating from this piece, and sat through tons of horrific rape sequences hoping that in the end, it would all be worth it, but ultimately it didn't manage to conjure up enough good-will in the end for me to really love it. The game having kamige status doesn't really help, as it ended up making my expectations completely out of wack. As someone who has no interest in sexual content in VNs, their constant inturruptions really destroyed the pacing for me. It's decent, and I'd still recommend it to those who think it sounds interesting, just... be prepared. Because I definitely wasn't. You WILL need mind-bleach. And then you'll wish you had some more.

<report>Exceptionally beautiful story-telling: the fragmented shards of glass crystalise into a blossoming flower. A modern story about a broken ego resulting from an environment of lifelong suffering, invalidation, and ultimately overcoming that pain, in excruciating transparent detail. A journey from death to life, or to some, life to death. Will you overcome that pain too?

<report>Though disturbing and sometimes difficult to read, this truly does look like one of the best visual novels I have ever read. With amazing art, great storytelling and amazingly "alive" characters this truly is a novel you should not mis out on, even though its themes can make it hard to read some parts. The focus on philosophy, different perspectives and overall perspective on human nature truly make it a one of a kinda piece. However, it's extremely slow pace (at points), unending (brutal) h-scenes as well as its more difficult to read segments keep it from being perfect (10/10). With regard to this last commend, I should note that I have never been angry at a character in a visual novel until now, which in my eyes is also truly an amazing accomplishment (fuck bullies).
Read it!

<report>The 2nd and 3rd routes are such a fun ride with how it presents such intense scenes that toys with the reader's emotions but a distinction must be made between scenes where the esoteric imagery can fully envelop the reader and the cheap stuff that you can't help but roll your eyes over. The issues really do come crashing once you get to the back end of this VN where the saccharine writing can be nauseating that it ruins a lot of the goodwill that it built up. It doesn't help that every single H-scene just railroads the pacing to a halt that it feels like padding. Is it a must-read for visual novel fans? If you want to see the potential of this medium can only have then it's worth experiencing but if you just want to read something that's quality from start to finish then not at all.

<report>The best short story I've ever read. An excellent plot with references to literature and philosophy with hints of surrealism and fapable hentai except for some disgusting non-fap scenes. A masterpiece for sure.

<report>This visual novel is a highly enjoyable ride exploring difficult, often philosophical themes and strong emotions with exceptional storytelling and memorable characters. Be prepared for extreme physical and psychological violence, madness and cowardice but also for kindness, rationality and courage that come together at the end to deliver a punch to the gut that you kind of see coming, but still cannot avoid. Highly recommended.

<report>I am speechles. I didn't really expected it to be this good and touching. This masterpiece right here really made me question my life and this is not an easy job not many series can do that. I really liked the characters, i really liked the story and most of all the narrative was exceptional. I recommend you read Cyrona de Bergerac before playing because it is really something else if you know the plot of the play.

<report>Terrible characters, horrible pacing with long dull sections, and as edgy as Shadow the Hedgehog if he decided to read a bit philosophy and decided to show everyone how smart he is. I have no idea why this is so highly rated.

<report>In my opinion Subahibi can only be labelled as a one-of-a-kind experience that can’t really be described meaningfully. You’ll just have to experience it yourself. It features content so extreme that many of the fucked-up stuff you’ve seen will look tame in comparison, but also some absolutely gorgeous moments. People have spent months studying its themes, characters, and references, but it’s equally possible to just hop in for the ride and enjoy the story as it is. I don’t think I will ever experience something like this again, and if you think you can stomach it, I highly encourage you to give it a go.

<report>The surreal, atmospheric and, most importantly, understandable plot up until the last chapters were fantastic. But they are ultimately ruined, as so many great VNs are, by it's nonsensical reveals and trash ending when the VN changes tone to a much more generic experience, as if another writer entirely had taken over. Enjoy the journey while it lasts.

<report>The first visual novel I've read. It's definitely a unique experience with some very VERY upsetting content (not as in bad, but makes you angry). A lot of philosophical rambling that I wasn't into. Has an interesting story overall. Second half of game is definitely much better than first half (looking glass insects to the end, where all the events get explained). It wasn't a masterpiece for me but still a worthwhile experience.

<report>The excellent story of Subarashiki Hibi is somewhat diminished by the early portions. The first couple chapters felt like a drag for various reasons - unexplained mysteries piling up and up, uninteresting slice-of-life, and boring or outright repulsive characters. It improved dramatically after trudging through the first couple chapters, as the plot started to reveal itself. Overall, a good play/read with quite a few philosophical or thought-provoking bits.

<report>I went into it knowing nothing on what I will be reading. In the end, after finishing all of the endings, it didn't disappoint. The long and sometimes repetitive story telling was challenging my patience, but i kept reading. The gorgeous art style made the descent into this rabbit hole of a visual novel unforgettable. As for the music, it doesn't fail to immerse anyone into its own wonderful universe. The best part of this visual novel was the direction the writing took. To say the least, this story was special in all its aspects.

<report>Initial notes: Puts you through such a wild ride over all the emotions you could possibly experience with a visual novel. The ultimate exposition of the human condition. SCA-Ji is a genius that attempts a variety of genres and content with irreverent literary flair. Though I feel some of the writing could have been handled technically cleaner/with more maturity – In some parts it almost feels as if he's showing off a bit too much, especially regarding Ayana. Curious to find out how Sakuuta is like.

2022:The story grows more and more intimate as time goes on. The struggles of the protagonist feel as personal to me as the struggles of Takeru in Muv-Luv Alternative, something I'll surely remember for life. The resounding「人よ、幸福に生きろ!」is the perfect epitome after experiencing the whole journey.

<report>That was really an interesting experience . Visual novel itself is pretty good, but not the best. The most interesting part of the story is different perspective. The thing can turn a regular piece of media into a masterpiece (The house in fata morgana). First couple routes were really awesome, but after it was a lil boring, still endings are good, an interesting story for one time. Game has a ton of H-scenes, sometimes they pretty weird and I've been thinking "omg...this is so strange, why would u do that?" Story has interesting plot twist, good characters and in the end it was enjoyable. 7/10

<report>My first VN and also my first incredible VN experience, I took about 100 hours to finish it all.
Brought me tears, confusion, sadness, a mix of emotions and til' this day I still wonder about it a lot.
Definetly a good read.

<report>Overall, I consider Subahibi pretty good. Had a strong start past the introduction chapter, reaching its crescendo with looking glass insects. Sadly it becomes less and less interesting once the mystery starts to get solved, with focus being less on the original cast we’ve grown attached too and more on a secondary group that is… fine. The story is at its best when focusing on horror and mystery, but it decided to veer off with a more conventional focus on character drama. It feels like a different story by the end of it. The philosophical pontificating was entertaining, but the story essentially reached conclusions I myself reached out a long time ago, so it was really nothing life changing. I do appreciate how much literature it gave me to read :)

<report>A decent story overall, heavily marred by an obscene amount of abstract writing completely detached from the narrative. My Own Invention is an excellent and a very, VERY unique read, rest of the novel is, functionally, an excuse for the author to share philosophical thoughts in his own voice. They're not a terrible read but you certainly have to be in a mood for it.
Prepare for a lot of mysteries, including the one deserving to be called the "main" one to be left not only unanswered but plain unattended by the later part of the scenario. Prepare for an underwhelming ending that builds off the last two chapters of the story and nothing else.

<report>Even 4 years after reading it, my feelings for this visual novel have not faded. I don't know what else to write to attract anyone, just give this story a chance.
My favorite chapters: It's my Own Invention, Looking-glass Insects.
For me, this is by far the best Japanese work.

<report>This is an extremely good visual novel.
With its unique multi-perspective, excellent plot, and thought-provoking thinking about school bullying and social issues, it stands out among many visual novels.
Philosophical contemplation, unique atmosphere, strong heart-pounding, beautiful music, and the perfect ending at the end have become one of my favorite visual novels

<report>What is the central theme of SubaHibi?

To live everyday happily.

So what makes this different from other mediums that try to teach the same theme, such as YotsubaTo or that wretch Ellen Degeneres telling us to be happy?

SCA-JI manages to write a story with a compelling mystery that managed to keep me hooked for the ENTIRETY of the game.

Were the rape scenes too damn much? Yeah.
Did some of the philosophical talk go over my head? Yeah.
Did the writer manage to successfully spread his core themes of living happily? Yeah.
Did looking glass insects piss me off to high hell and back? Yeah.
Did I feel disappointed? No.

Many feelings and messages were passed through this work, and while it is NOT perfect by any means, it is a veritable masterpiece.

<report>Such an amazing work one of the best visual novels I've ever read despite it giving me a headache whenever I read it for too long. Its like a work by David Lynch but for bisexual weebs instead of middle class white americans.

<report>Well, there is a lot of dark things happening in between, but overall this VN just bored me over 6 hours now so i guess i will skip on it. Weird, there was so much hype but there is a lot of esoteric stuff... i mean some philosophical stuff might be interesting down the road but the story just doesn't keep me interested. This is vastly different than any other VN i read and maybe it is just not my cup of tea. A shame, as i was really hearing a lot of praise

<report>SCA-JI's Subarashiki Hibi came out in Japan on March 26th 2010. That day should become a landmark in video game history comparable to how January 31st is known as Final Fantasy VII day in Japan. There was no hype, or fanfare, which is why I think the players were in a state of shock. A very humble release for one of the greatest works in the medium. Stretching the limits of human thought, imagination, and wonder, Subahibi prides itself on reckless abandon. Hypnotizing the audience, and daring them to take up its challenge. The visual novel breakthrough is finally here.

<report>I finished Chapter 1, and I thought it was an amazing visual novel from the beginning. However, what I did or did not expect was the onslaught of pedophilic / child h-scenes that happened. It just made me regret reading it, and although I very much loved it when I first finished it, I just lost all my love for it and it did not leave an impact because of all the weird h-scenes in Chapter 3 and especially in the Wonderful Everyday ending... I would not recommend this visual novel to anybody who has a slight care to this weirdness. However, if you don't care, then go for it, I would say it's a very amazing story with intricate detailing if you just cut out the weird things in it.

<report>I only managed to make it an hour and half into the game before throwing in the towel.

The game teeter totters heavily between slapstick and gibberish, two things I hate in writing. In the former you get insufferable tsundere acts, constant theatrical misunderstandings, and contrived interactions that feel like characters are always talking past each other. In the latter you get nonsensical rambling and pseudo-intellectual exchanges, where in for some reason these schoolgirls all read the same obscure philosophy books.

The only good thing I can say about the game is it has a nice presentation. The character art is weird but charming, the backgrounds have a great atmosphere, and the music is okay. And the translation is pretty decent. It's just too bad the original script is so poor.
