Description

At 28, Yoshimura Osamu faces despair: love lost, job gone, hope diminished, and youth fading. After spending his last money on a drink, he meets Honoka, a captivating woman from the pub, who offers him encouragement and her address, suggesting he visit if in trouble. She apparently manages an apartment complex, which Osamu, intrigued, decides to explore.

Arriving at 'Terrace House Hinosaka,' he discovers a dilapidated place, not the luxury he expected. He's greeted by Hinosaka Mitoko, a small but spirited girl revealed to be Honoka's daughter. With Honoka having eloped, Mitoko now runs the boarding house with its odd tenants.

Osamu, describing himself as tall and educated but jobless, starts living with Mitoko, challenging his view of himself and his circumstances. He navigates life with peculiar neighbors, rebuffs advances from a coworker, thwarts a rich neighbor's plots, and seeks the truth about Mitoko's enigmatic teacher.

Entwined with misfortune, Osamu's future is uncertain, leading to an unpredictable journey of growth and discovery.

<report>A work improved upon compared to Maruto's previous Parfait ~Chocolat Second Brew~.

In true Maruto fashion, the story is character driven and well written. The characters are fresh and fun, the heroines having complexity and hurdles to go through. Also the humor being quite funny at first and dreadful later.

Fortunately, the dread of tedium from the SoL that is Damekoi isn't as present compared to Parfait or his other works. However, it is still a problem as there is a lot of fluff that one would be seduced to want to press the CRTL button from similar and familiar scenes happening over and over again.

Only two routes are actually worth reading, Asami and Mitoko. Others will ruin the experience, the other routes were probably tacked on for the H-Scenes anyway.

Would play again/10

<report>This VN is quite a refreshing change of pace from the highschooler only system that seems endemic to the medium. Some of the drama is too ridiculous to suspend your disbelief but the story doesnt really matter. I liked the character developments and some of the moments were really depressing/uplifting. Definitely worth a read even for the art.

Similar to family project, if you liked that one you'll like this one.

<report>I remember playing this in 2019 when it came out, but it never struck me to write a review until now. I often look back fondly on this one, since it was one the first few actual VNs I played (the first was Bible Black, an eroge, so it doesn't count). The characters are diverse (with some overlap), so it might be hard to like them all. But for the ones I liked, I really love how their stories/routes turned out. I'm a sucker for the early 2000s anime aesthetic. It just makes me feel warm/cozy from the nostalgia. Although, the quality of the story and ambience was unlike any of the anime I've watched back then (given it IS a VN). There were so many moments where I wanted to just hug Mitoko. It's the first time I've felt that I would've been fine playing a VN even without 18+ ero content.

<report>I have never liked harems and I don't like it here even if it makes more sense than the usual harem. Mitoko's route is literally just repeatedly rejecting all the heroines (besides Mitoko) until the end which was simply not a very pleasant experience. However, the game for the first 75% is a solid 9/10 with some great characters and drama but drops in quality later on. It is definitely still worth checking out though

<report>forget this VN even existed.

it drags way too much with its "daily grind" scenes. what I mean with daily grind scenes is when characters says the cringey lines like "I gotta catch up with you" or "I gotta work harder" or something like that. look if I wanted to go out and do daily grind, guess what I'd do? yup I'd just LITERALLY go outside.

what little the VN has left to offer, to nobody's surprise also offers little. romance? meh. relationship "drama"? also meh. and for a completionist gamer like myself this was hell to read. and I was alt-tabbing without finishing 20-30 lines. that's when I knew I had to drop it.

<report>This had the potential to be an amazing psychological commentary but Japan just had to go and be Japan didn't it?

The dynamic between Mitoko and Osamu is initially excellent with the two feeding off each other's loneliness/poor mental states to create a confusing relationship in a morally ambiguous place. The problem is that every route other than Asami's shouldn't exist - it's the only route that's emotionally satisfying and deals with all the morally ambiguous issues in ways they should be dealt with. The others are either excuses for extra porn or child sexual assault, and while the latter can be a worthwhile topic to explore in this case it doesn't really make a meaningful effort to, preferring to somehow make it seem normal instead.

Even Asami's route has a crap ending. God damn it.
