Description

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni takes place in June 1983 in a fictional rural village called Hinamizawa, which has a population of approximately 2000.

The main character, Keiichi Maebara, moves to Hinamizawa and befriends his new classmates, Rena Ryugu, Mion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Hojo. Keiichi joins their after-school club activities, which mainly consist of card and board games (and punishment games for the loser, usually him).

Hinamizawa appears to be an ordinary, peaceful, rural village to Keiichi. However, the peacefulness abruptly ends after the annual Watanagashi Festival, a celebration to express gratitude toward the local god, Oyashiro-sama. Keiichi discovers that on the day of the Watanagashi Festival, for the past four years, one person has been murdered, and another has vanished.

Soon, he becomes drawn into the strange events surrounding the Watanagashi Festival and Oyashiro-sama. In each story arc, he or one of his friends becomes paranoid, and a crime is committed. Usually, the crime involves the murder of one of their friends.

While it seems impossible to tell their delusions apart from the mystery of Hinamizawa, the truth is gradually revealed throughout the story.

<report>I thought about writing an "accessible" general review of the series, but (1) I feel like others have certainly already done a much better and comprehensive job at this than I ever could, and (2) the game's extremely high reputation basically speaks for itself and does more than anything I could to sell itself as a work which basically everyone should eventually read. And so instead, I'm structuring this writeup by presenting a few specific, highly-tailored reasons I would give my past self to read Higurashi, which will hopefully (1) collate the things I liked most about this work, and (2) possibly serves as a persuasive recommendation for you to also play this game if you happen to share... <report>This is a story that benefits from the grace of retrospection. Despite having read Higurashi no Naku Koro ni well in advance of its spiritual successor Umineko, it's very difficult to consider its merits without comparing it to the latter—for the very simple reason that without Umineko, the flashes of greatness Higurashi displays have a deceptive and illusory quality to them: you are left wondering if such moments were purposeful or not. Taking into consideration not only Umineko but other 07th Expansion works like Higanbana and Ciconia, Higurashi's missteps look like the errors of a writer still finding his voice, and its successes the items which he would later refine into superior... <report>It's Higurashi, I can't say anything about it that hasn't been said before by people who know their way with words better than me. It's well loved for a reason.

I think Ryukishi's strength lies in his character writing. One thing that really sticks about to me about Higurashi is that almost all of the main cast truly feel like real people to me. I feel like I actually got to know Rena as a person, that Mion was actually my friend, etc. I particularly loved Meakashi and Tsumihoroboshi. I loved the different perspective changes, I just wish every main character had their own episode told from their perspective. But I understand how that could be a struggle with Satoko and Mion for example... Read more »

<report>I've already wrote a short review(link) for question arcs and almost all of my previous praise of the series applies here as well so I won't repeat myself, thematically I think it's great, character writing wise it's great, the story is also great, the social commentary and Ryukishi07's rant mood again is great, so let's just address the elephant in the room and go on with our lives so that I'd be able to see whether or not Kanou Kiichi really did improve things in Miotsokushi or not

Higurashi is a mystery psychological horror at first, but when the answers are finally given to the reader the story would inevitably feel different, for me personally The execution of Higurashi's story and... Read more »
